United States V. Muhammad: Brief Of Evidence Law Professors As Amici Curiae In Support Of Respondents, Richard D. Friedman Aug 2021

United States V. Muhammad: Brief Of Evidence Law Professors As Amici Curiae In Support Of Respondents, Richard D. Friedman

Appellate Briefs

Amici curiae teach, research, and write about the law of evidence. Amici share the view that the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit correctly remanded this case to the District Court for an in camera review of the Executive’s claim of the state secrets privilege.<\p>

The concept of “state secrets” is an evidentiary privilege. It is occasionally confused with other doctrines. Privileges are to be strictly construed and narrowly interpreted because they impede the search for truth. The state secrets privilege should not operate as a monarchal “Crown Privilege.” When courts are confronted with state secrets claims, …

Toward Enhancement Of Clinical Judgment And Critical Thinking Simulation In The Classroom, Roxie L. Barnes Aug 2021

Toward Enhancement Of Clinical Judgment And Critical Thinking Simulation In The Classroom, Roxie L. Barnes

Dissertations

Health-care systems are changing, thus changing the expectations and requirements for nursing students entering the profession (Kaddoura, 2011). Nursing education must address the changes and focus on the development of critical thinking and clinical reasoning. When students are unable to apply clinical reasoning or clinical judgment into practice, there is an increase in potential for negative patient outcomes (Jones, Passos-Neto, & Braghiroli, 2015). Case-based learning (CBL) and simulation-based learning (SBL) are both active learning methods that can enhance development of critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and clinical judgment (Forneris et al., 2015). The purpose is to compare the use of CBL …

Silk Fibroin Supraparticles Created By The Evaporation Of Colloidal Ouzo Droplets, Ashley Lamb, Fengjie He, Shengjie Zhai, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Due to its high biocompatibility and biodegradability, supraparticles made from silk fibroin—produced from Bombyx mori (B. mori) cocoons—can find various applications in biomedical fields. The evaporation of Ouzo droplets by not requiring energy nor a surfactant is an environmentally friendly, easy, and cost-effective strategy to fabricate three-dimensional supraparticles, tackling the so-called “coffee ring effect” associated with droplet evaporation. Silk fibroins are dissolved into quaternary droplets, comprised of ultrapure water, ethanol, trans-anethole oil, and formic acid. The Ouzo droplet is able to form an oil ring that facilitates the droplet contraction to create a three-dimensional supraparticle. Using the Ouzo effect to …

Effects Of Sensory Feedback And Collider Size On Reach-To-Grasp Coordination In Haptic-Free Virtual Reality, Mariusz P. Furmanek, Madhur Mangalam, Kyle Lockwood

Journal Articles

Technological advancements and increased access have prompted the adoption of head- mounted display based virtual reality (VR) for neuroscientific research, manual skill training, and neurological rehabilitation. Applications that focus on manual interaction within the virtual environment (VE), especially haptic-free VR, critically depend on virtual hand-object collision detection. Knowledge about how multisensory integration related to hand-object collisions affects perception-action dynamics and reach-to-grasp coordination is needed to enhance the immersiveness of interactive VR. Here, we explored whether and to what extent sensory substitution for haptic feedback of hand-object collision (visual, audio, or audiovisual) and collider size (size of spherical pointers representing the …
