Substrate Temperature Effects On The Peel Behavior Of Temporary Pavement Marking Tapes, Hyeyoung Son, Kendra Erk, Chelsea Davis
Substrate Temperature Effects On The Peel Behavior Of Temporary Pavement Marking Tapes, Hyeyoung Son, Kendra Erk, Chelsea Davis
School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Temporary pavement marking (TPM) tapes are utilized In road construction to delineate temporary traffic lanes and work zones. Adhesive failure of TPM tapes can therefore remove lane and work zone designations, confusing drivers and causing serious accidents, especially in high speed zones. Thus, the adhesion of TPM tapes to pavement surface plays an important role in road construction traffic safety. Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) comprise the adhesive layer of TPM tapes. The adhesion of PSAs depends on their temperature-dependent viscoelastic properties. Since environmental conditions vary during construction, the adhesion of TPM tapes will change over a range of operating temperatures. …

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum
An international consensus of scientific experts is now demanding "immediate action" in response to the environmental, climate, and biodiversity crises. But are our legal and regulatory frameworks equipped to respond to the rapid pace of environmental degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change? What incidence is there, transnationally, of laws that seek to protect the Earth from the humans that inhabit it? In the past few decades, there is a growing social, legal, and political movement towards more ecocentric regulation of the planet, where new laws and institutions seek to protect natural resources for their own intrinsic value. In this paper, …

Human–Wildlife Interactions
Wild pigs (Sus scrofa) are a non-native, invasive species that cause considerable damage and transmit a variety of diseases to livestock, people, and wildlife. We explored Twitter, the most popular social media micro-blogging platform, to demonstrate how social media data can be leveraged to investigate social identity and sentiment toward wild pigs. In doing so, we employed a sophisticated machine learning approach to investigate: (1) the overall sentiment associated with the dataset, (2) online identities via user profile descriptions, and (3) the extent to which sentiment varied by online identity. Results indicated that the largest groups of online …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Neural crest cells (NCCs) are vertebrate embryonic multipotent cells that can migrate and differentiate into a wide array of cell types that give rise to various organs and tissues. Tissue stiffness produces mechanical force, a physical cue that plays a critical role in NCC differentiation; however, the mechanism remains unclear. The method described here provides detailed information for the optimized generation of polyacrylamide hydrogels of varying stiffness, the accurate measurement of such stiffness, and the evaluation of the impact of mechanical signals in O9-1 cells, a NCC line that mimics in vivo NCCs.
Hydrogel stiffness was measured using atomic force …

Assessment Of The Effects Of Airflow Conditions Related To Hop Drying, David Mabie
Assessment Of The Effects Of Airflow Conditions Related To Hop Drying, David Mabie
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Hops have been utilized by brewers for centuries to contribute bitterness, antimicrobial preservation and desirable aromatic profiles to beer. The hop cone is a small, lightweight, high moisture content flower which produces lupulin glands containing resins and essential oils that contribute desirable characteristics to beer. Due to the high harvest moisture content (75% wet basis), hops must be rapidly dried to properly preserve them for future processing and brewing. While hops have been dried for centuries, most literature from the past century has focused on drying to minimizing loss to the resin or physical cone structure. The objectives of this …

Inflammation is a natural response of the body to infections or any potential threat to the body. But, sometimes the immune system attacks its own body causing persistent inflammation leading to inflammatory diseases. One of the common chronic inflammatory diseases is rheumatoid arthritis (RA) which causes inflammation of the synovial membrane. The current treatments for RA are effective in controlling the symptoms but they come with severe side effects and economic burden. Further, the management of pain is still a problem with these drugs. Sinomenine is a natural alkaloid obtained from the Chinese medicinal plant Sinomenium acutum that has been …

Effects Of Sodium Sulfate Attack On Concrete Incorporated With Drying-Wetting Cycles, Fang Liu, Zhanping You, Rui Xiong, Xu Yang
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
It has been widely observed that sulfate attack can damage the durability of concrete. This research investigated the mass loss and damage degree of concrete under sodium sulfate attack incorporated with drying-wetting cycles. The impact factors, including water-binder ratio, solution concentration of sodium sulfate, fly ash content, curing time, and drying-wetting cycle system, were observed to influence the sodium sulfate attack by the mass loss rate and damage degree at regular time intervals. Also, the hydrates of sulfate-attacked samples were analyzed using X-ray diffraction. Results indicated that a high water-binder and high-concentration sodium sulfate solution could accelerate the transportation of …

Direct Activation Of Light Alkanes To Value-Added Chemicals Using Supported Metal Oxide Catalysts, Md Ashraful Abedin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
One of the most challenging aspects of modern-day catalysis is the conversion of methane. Direct conversion of methane via dehydroaromatization (MDHA) is a well-known process which can produce valuable hydrocarbons. Mo oxide supported on ZSM-5/MCM-22 has been studied extensively in recent years for MDHA. Mo carbides are responsible for activating methane by forming CHx species. These are dimerized into C2Hy and oligomerized on ZSM-5/MCM-22 Brønsted acid sites to form aromatics. Sulfated zirconia (SZ) supported Mo catalyst contains the acid sites necessary to produce benzene in MDHA. Here, sulfated hafnia (SH), a homologous oxide like SZ, has been proposed to provide …

Lightning Talk (5 Min): Not Really Acing It: Accessing Asexuality In Academic Libraries, Haviva Avirom, Violet Fox
Cataloging Queer Library Issues: A Symposium
Abstract
Asexuality is often a forgotten orientation, even within LGBTQ communities. In this lightning talk, we will discuss how this lack of visibility, shortage of relevant materials, and outright misunderstandings about asexuality can make finding resources difficult. Though the root of the problem lies in underpublishing of materials about asexuality, libraries compound the problem through inadequate collecting of asexual materials, both monographs and journal articles. Without specific intent to acquire and maintain asexuality resources, it is easy to miss these resources entirely. The presentation will consider the various campus stakeholders who benefit from increased visibility of asexuality resources. Visibility within …

Ballistic Aerocapture For Smallsat: A Case Study For Venus Atmospheric Sampling Probe, Oswaldo Santana, Ye Lu
Small Satellite Conference
Aerocapture is a maneuver that can improve the capabilities of interplanetary small satellite missions to efficiently deliver a probe to a target destination. The maneuver is accomplished with a single atmospheric pass followed by a small propulsive burn to reach the final orbit. In this paper, we consider a SmallSat atmospheric sampling probe with an existing heatshield and evaluate the performance and benefits of ballistic aerocapture. The performance is assessed by comparing ΔV required of a fully propulsive orbital insertion and that of a ballistic aerocapture. Significant fuel mass savings can be achieved with a passive lifting vehicle. With a …

How Satellites Are Moving Beyond The Class System: Class Agnostic Development And Operations Approaches For Constraints-Driven Missions, Barbara Braun, Lee Jasper
Small Satellite Conference
Should we abolish the Class System? The Class A/B/C/D mission assurance and risk posture designations familiar to most satellite developers were established in 1986. They are used by both the Department of Defense (DoD) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to define risk and risk mitigation requirements for flight missions. However, many of today’s satellites are different – smaller, digitally engineered, designed for production, and increasingly destined for proliferated architectures. The rate of development is increasing while the uniqueness of the systems being built is decreasing.
The need to move faster and the ability to utilize, for the first …

Rf Cables: The Overlooked Satellite Component, Andrew Kurzrok, Maria Calia
Small Satellite Conference
In comparison to the difficult work of payload design and system integration, specifying the correct RF cables seems all-too simple. A passive microwave component, the purpose of an RF cable is simply to transport an analog signal from one physical location on the satellite to another.
However, RF cabling design decisions can mean the difference between mission success and failure. RF cables can represent a potential weak link in overall system design because they are mechanically and electrically exposed. All too often, we find engineers have specified RF cables that either do not optimize for system performance or create mission …

5G NB-IoT is seen as a key technology for providing truly ubiquitous, global 5G coverage (1.000.000 devices/km2) for machine type communications in the internet of things. A non-terrestrial network (NTN) variant of NB-IoT is being standardized in the 3GPP, which along with inexpensive and non-complex chip-sets enables the production of competitively priced IoT devices with truly global coverage. NB-IoT allows for narrowband single carrier transmissions in the uplink, which improves the uplink link-budget by as much as 16.8 dB over the 180 [kHz] downlink. This allows for a long range sufficient for ground to low earth orbit (LEO) communication without …

Non Data-Aided Carrier Tracking Techniques For Continuous-Phase Frequency-Shift Keyed Signals, Brendan Hill, Nazia Mozaffar, Salwan Damman
Small Satellite Conference
Communications between ground stations and nanosats in low earth orbit (LEO) require acquisition and tracking of large Doppler frequency offsets due to the relative velocity between the transmitter and the receiver. The Doppler frequency shift varies with time, reaching its fastest rate of change as the small satellite reaches its closest approach to the ground station. For phase modulated signals, a frequency offset estimate extracted from the band edge filters is used to correct for the Doppler shift. This approach encounters difficulties when it’s used to correct for frequency offset in continuous phase frequency shift keyed (CPFSK) signals. Optimized band …
