Grp-093-174 Transforming Everyday Smartwatch Data Into Clinical Early Warnings, Nursat Jahan Apr 2026

Grp-093-174 Transforming Everyday Smartwatch Data Into Clinical Early Warnings, Nursat Jahan

C-Day Computing Showcase

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) related most machine learning (ML) models trained on clinical data offer high accuracy but are not practical for continuous monitoring. Smartwatch-based wearables provide continuous real-time physiological data but lack clinical validation for robust risk prediction outside the clinical setting. To bridge this gap, we proposed a novel teacher-student knowledge distillation framework that transfers knowledge of complex and large EHR datasets to a small Fitbit smartwatch dataset-based prediction model. The student model achieves promising accuracy, identifying all types of derived CVD risk profile groups. Our study introduces a non-invasive continuous health monitoring framework, demonstrating that passively collected daily …

Uc-097-186 Nudox - Compiler Based Information Retrieval, Mikita Slabysh

C-Day Computing Showcase

Nudox is a language-agnostic, version-aware documentation and search platform backed by compiler-level analysis. By lowering source code to intermediate representations, Nudox extracts structural metadata, like function signatures, types, and modules independent of the source language. At the core of the platform is a custom search engine built around versioned knowledge: queries resolve to graph nodes and expand outward along structural edges using semantic heuristics, surfacing contextually relevant symbols rather than flat text matches. The result is a canonical, automatically generated source of truth that tracks how a codebase evolves across commits.

Choreographed Confession: Plath’S Engineered Extremity And Technical Voice, Emma Heagney Apr 2026

Choreographed Confession: Plath’S Engineered Extremity And Technical Voice, Emma Heagney

Liberty University Research Week

Sylvia Plath’s poetry is frequently interpreted through the framework of confessionalism, encouraging readings that equate emotional extremity with spontaneous self-disclosure and psychological crisis. This presentation challenges that assumption by arguing that the intensity of Plath’s late poetry is not an eruption of uncontrolled feeling but a deliberately engineered aesthetic effect. Drawing on Plath’s journals and letters alongside close readings of poems from Ariel, the project demonstrates that Plath conceived of poetry as a disciplined, technical practice involving control, revision, and precision rather than unmediated expression. Her private writings repeatedly emphasize ordering, manipulation, and the importance of sound, revealing a poet …

Winston Churchill's Crucial Role In Developing The Tank, Wesley Jones

Liberty University Research Week

The tank was a top-secret project in World War I and played a key role in helping put the war to an end. Its debut was not perfect as many had doubts on whether it could be a weapon of war in the future like the airplane had cemented itself to be. However, few people like Winston Churchill saw the tank project’s potential and was key to its development. As a result, the steps that it took for the tank to be a symbol of modern warfare that it is today would not have happened the way it needed to …

Formation Of Rosette-Like Hierarchical Structures On Cylindrical Titanium Surfaces., Cole Urquhart, Ally Doud, Michael Korn, Hector Medina

Liberty University Research Week

The purpose of this experiment was to characterize titanium-based rosettes and other micro-sized crystal formations on multiple different non-planar titanium surfaces. Rosettes are crystal structures in the titanium sulfate family. They are 20-150µm in diameter and vastly increase the surface area of the places where they are grown, which can lead to various possible applications in future research. The titanium type that was being experimented on was titanium gauze (50µm diameter). To grow titanium-based structures, two steps are involved: etching and crystal formation. Firstly, the titanium material was placed in a centrifuge tube filled with 1mL of 18M (96%) conc. …

Increasing Fatigue Life: Position And Energy Controlled Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment, Joseph Holt Apr 2026

Increasing Fatigue Life: Position And Energy Controlled Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment, Joseph Holt

Liberty University Research Week

Metal structures in engineering are limited by mechanical fatigue. When a material is repeatedly stressed, even beneath its ultimate strength, it slowly develops nano-fractures that propagate and eventually cause the material to suddenly fracture or fail. When this occurs in high-precision, cyclically stressed applications, such as commercial airliners, unchecked material fatigue is catastrophic. This study has shown promising increases in weld-site material fatigue life through a newly developed processing method. Researchers at Liberty University’s Center for Engineering Research and Education (CERE) custom-built a machine to perform position and energy controlled surface mechanical attrition treatment (PECSMAT), which harnesses the advantages of …

Authentic Vs. Artificial Intelligence: The Effect Of Generative Ai On Users’ Brains, Ivy Rath Apr 2026

Authentic Vs. Artificial Intelligence: The Effect Of Generative Ai On Users’ Brains, Ivy Rath

Liberty University Research Week

Currently, research on generative AI's effect on the brains of those who use it is sparse. However, cognitive offloading, or the outsourcing of intellectual processes to technology or other people, is a well-known neurological phenomenon, and it is through cognitive offloading that we may begin to understand how generative AI affects mental processes. Cognitive offloading occurs frequently, and common examples include using a calculator, GPS, or driver-assist functions. Now, generative AI offers users a far more pervasive kind of cognitive offloading, in that entire mental processes once unique to human minds (such as problem-solving) may now be replicated and supplanted …

Production, Isolation And Characterization Of Novel Peroxidases From Cucurbita Family, Rahel Mamo Apr 2026

Production, Isolation And Characterization Of Novel Peroxidases From Cucurbita Family, Rahel Mamo

Liberty University Research Week

Peroxidases are found throughout nature and are valuable biocatalysts due to their versatility in catalyzing oxidative reactions using hydrogen peroxide as a co-substrate. The peroxidase from horseradish root is widely used in diagnostics and synthetic applications, however, plant peroxidases from other plant sources remain underexplored. Recently, a peroxidase from the skin of Cucurbita maxima (PKS) was isolated and demonstrated promising biocatalytic properties related to the decomposition of a wide variety of fluorinated aromatic compounds. Purification and characterization of this enzyme revealed a protein sequence that was similar to the well characterized HRP, with some key amino acid substitutions. A second …

Characterization Of Peroxidase From Butternut Squash Skin: Potential Use In Bioremediation, Ava Witkowski

Liberty University Research Week

Peroxidases are present in many diverse plant species and catalyze chemical oxidations, some that may have significance in biotechnological areas like bioremediation. In several recent papers we characterizes a novel peroxidase from the skin of pumpkin that possessed desirable catalytic activities in relation to a class of environmental contaminants call fluorinated phenolics. In the course of these studies, we were able to do genomic analysis on a related plant species curcubita moscata (butternut squash) and identified a peroxidase with very similar sequence. The current study focusses on the characterization of that novel peroxidase in comparison with the pumpkin skin squash. …

Kinetic Analysis Of Degradation And Maximum Catalytic Capacity For Plant Peroxidase Enzymes, Hayden Stollings Apr 2026

Kinetic Analysis Of Degradation And Maximum Catalytic Capacity For Plant Peroxidase Enzymes, Hayden Stollings

Liberty University Research Week

In 2006, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began investigation into the “forever chemicals” known as PFAS. PFAS, which stand for “per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances,” are a highly stable and toxic compound that were mass produced throughout the 1900’s and was commonly found in common kitchenware, carpets, furniture and even produced in industrial processes.

The function behind PFAS’ stability lies in the abnormally strong Carbon-Fluoride bond, which explains for its initial functionality. Moreso, PFAS can withstand natural degradation in the environment, leading to buildup. Exposure to certain PFAS have been linked to health problems such as increased cholesterol, thyroid issues, reproductive …

Investigating The Role Of The Active-Site Metal In Plant Peroxidase Catalysis, Alexandra Knight Apr 2026

Investigating The Role Of The Active-Site Metal In Plant Peroxidase Catalysis, Alexandra Knight

Liberty University Research Week

This study investigates how replacing the native iron heme with manganese or cobalt protoporphyrins affects the enzymatic activity of horseradish (HRP), pumpkin skin (PKS), and butternut squash (BNT) peroxidases. A heme extraction protocol was adapted for generating apoenzymes by removing the native iron heme cofactor, and extraction was confirmed using UV-vis spectroscopy. While initial reconstitution of apo-HRP with manganese protoporphyrin IX appeared to be incomplete based on UV-vis analysis, the results suggested that manganese incorporation modifies the spectroscopic characteristics of the native enzyme. Comparing horseradish, pumpkin skin, and butternut peroxidases will reveal potential differences in metal-dependent activity and stability among …

Quantifying Biogenic Amines In Anaerobic Porcine Liver Decomposition For Improved Pmi Estimation Using Gc/Ms, Shanice Rerrie, Faith Ekoh

Liberty University Research Week

Postmortem interval (PMI) estimation remains a central challenge in forensic science, particularly during the early stages of decomposition. Quantifying biochemical changes during tissue breakdown has emerged as a promising approach to improve accuracy in PMI determination. This study expands on earlier research that quantified the biogenic amines cadaverine (CAD), putrescine (PUT), and methylamine (MEA), which result from bacterial amino acid decarboxylation during decomposition. It specifically examines how these compounds form under anaerobic conditions over a prolonged 30-day period. Porcine liver, serving as a human tissue analog, was decomposed in sealed anaerobic chambers. Tissue samples were collected at regular intervals, homogenized, …

Recovering Children's Choirs: Bonhoeffer's Musical Pneumatology And The Formation Of Polyphonic Fellowship, Dee Tackitt Apr 2026

Recovering Children's Choirs: Bonhoeffer's Musical Pneumatology And The Formation Of Polyphonic Fellowship, Dee Tackitt

Liberty University Research Week

This textual-investigative study explores how Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s musical pneumatology and his theology of polyphony provide a framework for recovering children’s choirs as practices of Spirit-formed communal discipleship. In Bonhoeffer’s writings—especially Life Together, Ethics, and Letters and Papers from Prison—polyphony becomes a theological metaphor in which “distinct voices sound together” under a unifying center without collapsing differences. Recent scholarship, particularly by Joanna Tarassenko, identifies this polyphonic imagery as a form of implicit pneumatology: the Holy Spirit harmonizes plurality into a fellowship where unity does not require uniformity, and difference does not result in division. This project applies that framework to the …

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Social media is inundated with radical and extreme propaganda. Such information is often left unfiltered due to platform algorithms that are economically driven and socially unethical in design. It puts social media users, mostly youth, in danger of becoming radicalized and vulnerable to supporting and engaging with extremist beliefs. When young people lack sufficient critical social media literacy (CSML), radical and extremist information impacts their perspectives, affecting behavior in the real world. A PRISMA-guided systematic review of the Web of Science core collections and the Scopus database was used to find peer-reviewed articles about how CSML skills can be used …

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This study examines how different educational approaches related to "Fria Ordets Dag" (Free Speech Day), a media literacy program by the Swedish public service, affect the ability of 859 sixth-graders to evaluate news and misinformation. Findings indicate that verbal instructions from a professional fact-checker and animations to model online fact-checking were less effective than demonstrative, authentic video tutorials. Feedback and practice were also important. The intervention yielded mixed outcomes on students’ attitudes towards credible news sources, pointing to the necessity for educational designs that bolster fact-checking and source trust. The research emphasizes how large-scale school interventions to promote students’ navigation …

Building Resilience: The Influence Of The Format On The Effectiveness Of News Literacy Messages, Patrick F. A. Van Erkel, Peter Van Aelst, David N. Hopmann, Claes H. De Vreese, Joren Van Nieuwenborgh

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Although academic interest in news literacy messages (NLM) has grown, many questions about them remain unresolved. First, it remains unclear how the format of the NLM influences its effectiveness. Second, we still know little about their long-term effectiveness. To answer these questions, this study conducted a two-wave experiment in Belgium. We compared NLMs in the format of a text, an infographic, and video. We also manipulated elements in the false news article that participants had to evaluate. Our findings show that NLMs are effective and that the effects remain over a middle-long period of two weeks. Second, we find that …
