The Great Depression And Canada's Major Originalist Decade, Preston Jordan Lim
The Great Depression And Canada's Major Originalist Decade, Preston Jordan Lim
Faculty Publications
Few periods of Canadian history have been as momentous or terrible as the Great Depression. The Dominion and provincial governments’ inability to combat financial and environmental catastrophe led many Canadians to openly question the appropriateness of their constitutional framework. As legal historians have since documented, many leading jurists of the time believed that a strong central government could, through the institution of national programs, contain the Great Depression; in the eyes of these 1930s jurists, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council—then Canada’s apex court—had sapped the federal government of its powers by misinterpreting the British North America Act, 1867 …

Fully Coupled, High-Resolution Atmosphere–Ocean–Wave Simulations Of The Offshore Wind Energy Environment During Hurricane Henri (2021), Chunyong Jung, Pengfei Xue, Chenfu Huang, William Pringle, Mrinal Biswas, Geeta Nain, Jiali Wang
Michigan Tech Publications
A new fully coupled modeling system, integrating atmosphere, ocean, and wave models, is presented to simulate intricate interactions during tropical cyclones and explore their potential implications for offshore infrastructure. The system is evaluated on Hurricane Henri (2021), chosen for its distinctive track along the US northeast coast, an area of densely populated regions and offshore wind energy zones. Three simulation setups are compared: atmosphere only, atmosphere–ocean, and a fully coupled atmosphere–ocean–wave model. Among them, the fully coupled model produces the most realistic results, improving not only the storm intensity near the surface but also the wind structure from the near …

Bioaerosols released during wildland and prescribed fires may influence ecosystems, air quality, and microbial dispersal, yet their transport and deposition remain poorly understood. This study combined infrared uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) observations of a prescribed burn with the coupled fire–atmosphere model WRF-SFIRE and a Lagrangian particle model in order to evaluate how uncertainties in simulated fire behavior affect predicted bioaerosol (bacterial cell) transport and deposition. A reconstruction of the observed spatiotemporal evolution of the fire was derived from thermal UAS measurements acquired during the burn and incorporated into a WRF-SFIRE simulation, in which the modeled fire spread was constrained to …
Task-Relevant Haptic Feedback Improves Asymptotic Performance In De Novo Arm Control Acquisition, Ian Howard, Laura Alvarez Hidalgo
Task-Relevant Haptic Feedback Improves Asymptotic Performance In De Novo Arm Control Acquisition, Ian Howard, Laura Alvarez Hidalgo
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The human motor system can learn to control novel effectors, but the contribution of task-relevant haptic dynamics to de novo learning remains unclear. Using a bimanual robotic interface, participants learned over two days to control the shoulder and elbow angles of a virtual arm in order to achieve accurate endpoint movements via constrained handle motions. On Day 1, one group practiced a purely kinematic mapping, whereas another group received continuous haptic feedback generated by an endpoint mass. With practice, movements shifted from sequential to more coordinated control and trajectories became straighter, with reduced directional deviation during target-directed endpoint movements, particularly …

Uscis-Grounded Ai: Preventing Hallucinations In Immigration Legal Services, Hephzibah Igwe
Uscis-Grounded Ai: Preventing Hallucinations In Immigration Legal Services, Hephzibah Igwe
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Artificial intelligence chatbots increasingly provide legal information to consumers, but AI "hallucinations" (confidently stated but incorrect responses) pose serious risks in immigration law. Incorrect information about USCIS forms, fees, processing times, or filing procedures can result in visa denials, deportation proceedings, or permanent bars to entry.
This research presents a novel "source-grounded AI" system that eliminates hallucinations in immigration legal information. Rather than relying solely on large language models (LLMs) trained on general internet data, the system uses USCIS.gov as the primary source of truth for all operational data including current forms, fees, processing times, filing addresses, and policy updates. …

Learning At Scale As Infrastructure: Lms Platforms, Data Pipelines, And Language-Based Evidence For Educational Measurement, Danielle S. Mcnamara, Michelle Banawan, Renu Balyan, Rod D. Roscoe, Tracy Arner
Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊
The increasing scale of digital learning environments has transformed the data available for educational measurement, learning analytics, and the learning sciences. However, learning at scale is often treated as a matter of sample size or novel analytic methods rather than as the outcome of institutional infrastructure that governs how learning data are generated, curated, transformed, and accessed. This paper offers an infrastructure-centered description of learning at scale, focusing on learning management systems (LMSs), platform-integrated tools, and data pipelines that produce research-ready educational data. As an illustrative exemplar, we draw on the design and operation of the Arizona State University Learning@Scale …
A Trojan Attack On Tdma Synchronization In Energy-Harvesting Wireless Networks, Ethan Berei
A Trojan Attack On Tdma Synchronization In Energy-Harvesting Wireless Networks, Ethan Berei
ONU Student Research Colloquium
This paper investigates a Trojan attack targeting the time-division multiple access (TDMA) synchronization mechanism in single-hop energy-harvesting wireless networks. The attack compromises a single node, which subtly skews its transmission timing to operate outside its assigned time slot, causing localized transmission overlaps and triggering repeated network-wide resynchronization events. This behavior shortens the synchronization interval, significantly increases control-plane traffic, and leads to higher energy consumption and delay in energy-constrained networks. The attack is modeled within a finite state machine (FSM) framework and experimentally evaluated under varying energy-harvesting conditions. Experimental results show that the number of synchronization events can increase by up …

Centralizing Communication Intake To Improve Workflow Visibility And Engagement: A Quality Improvement Project In A Cancer Center's Education Division, Menatalla El-Sharkawi, Mohamed Ait Aiss
Advances in Cancer Education and Quality Improvement
Background: In large or complex organizations, multiple teams may be charged with managing different components of a project, initiative, or administrative assignment. When these teams have overlapping needs for information, the absence of a structured intake and tracking process can limit transparency, reduce efficiency, and hinder coordination across communication channels.
Methods: Drawing on principles of strategic communications and project management, we created a structured and centralized information sharing process for teams within the education division of a comprehensive cancer center. The intervention included workflow redesign, development of a standardized intake system, and use of real-time dashboard analytics to support operation …
Graph Theoretical Modeling Of Self-Assembling Dna Of The Double Cone Graph, Philiffe Tebalan, Evan Burns
Graph Theoretical Modeling Of Self-Assembling Dna Of The Double Cone Graph, Philiffe Tebalan, Evan Burns
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
The unique properties of double-stranded DNA molecules make DNA a valuable structural material with which to form nanostructures, and the field of DNA nanotechnology is largely based on this premise. By modeling nanostructures with discrete graphs, efficient DNA self-assembly becomes a mathematical puzzle. These nanostructures have wide-ranging applications, such as containers for the transport and release of nano-cargos, templates for the controlled growth of nano-objects, and in drug-delivery methods. This research centers around exploring graph theoretical and combinatorial properties of DNA self-assembly to optimize the nanostructure construction for the Double Cone Graph.
Neurosplit: Differentiating Adhd And Early Alzheimer’S Using Eeg Biomarkers, Nithish Kumar Navaneethakrishnan
Neurosplit: Differentiating Adhd And Early Alzheimer’S Using Eeg Biomarkers, Nithish Kumar Navaneethakrishnan
GS4 Student Scholars Symposium
Electroencephalography (EEG) is a powerful and noninvasive technique of neurophysiological recording and biomarkers of cognitive impairment. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) are two extreme poles of the neurological impairment: one developmental and one degenerative, but they have similar behavioral and cognitive traits that make it more difficult to distinguish them. The paper provides a comparative model of distinguishing the EEG patterns of ADHD and Early Alzheimer's Disease based on spectral analysis and feature learning using deep learning. The methodology includes strict preprocessing, such as band-pass filtering, segmentation, and normalization, estimation of power spectral density, and calculation …
Ginsenoside-Based Theranostic Agents For Alzheimer's Disease: Implications For Brain Penetration, Cellular Uptake, And Anti-Aging Effects, Hak Soo Choi
Oxford ICSB
Red ginseng and its bioactive constituents, ginsenosides, have long been associated with neuroprotection and anti-aging effects, yet their limited ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and poorly characterized biodistribution have hindered therapeutic translation. To address this, we developed a library of “ginsenoprobes” by conjugating major red ginseng components (Rg1, Rg3, Rb1, Rh2, Rk1, Rg5) and red ginseng extract (RGE) to a zwitterionic near-infrared (NIR) fluorophore (ZW800-1C), enabling real-time tracking of their fate in vitro and in vivo. All ginsenoprobes were purified to >95% homogeneity via preparative HPLC and rigorously characterized for optical properties, including molar extinction coefficients and dye-to-ginsenoside …

Helmet Design Advancements Impacting Head Injuries In The Nfl, Lucas Slear, Cole Swiader, Jackson Katona, Ryan Valliere
Liberty University Research Week
This research study will investigate how helmet designs in the National Football League have changed in response to concussion concerns and player safety. Development of soft-shell helmet technology (Guardian Caps) and advancements in the padding inside of NFL helmets have caused concussion numbers to decrease and have caused head injuries to be less severe in the NFL over the last 25 years. The severity of these head injuries can be seen in recovery time for NFL players after sustaining a concussion. Our study aims to address the question: “How have advancements helmet design and engineering in the NFL impacted the …

Comparison Of Fea Model Connection Methods For A Structural Digital Twin, Luther Davis
Comparison Of Fea Model Connection Methods For A Structural Digital Twin, Luther Davis
Liberty University Research Week
A digital twin is a digital representation that is used to study a physical object or process. In civil engineering, digital twins are created to analyze the behavior of real structures using finite element analysis (FEA). A more accurate digital twin provides more accurate data; however, creating an accurate model introduces complex surfaces and connections that are difficult for FEA software to analyze. This research examines the optimal way to create a digital twin in the Abaqus software, to minimize computation time while preserving sufficient accuracy to generate realistic data. A section of a real truss bridge is modeled once …
Hedging Without Derivatives: A Regime-Aware Framework For Managing Downside Risk In Long-Only Portfolios, Whittman Brown, Birhanu Kramer, Carter Hall, Ryan Natelborg, Walker Lucas
Hedging Without Derivatives: A Regime-Aware Framework For Managing Downside Risk In Long-Only Portfolios, Whittman Brown, Birhanu Kramer, Carter Hall, Ryan Natelborg, Walker Lucas
Liberty University Research Week
This study evaluates regime-based allocation strategies for downside risk management in long-only portfolios. Traditional portfolio risk management relies heavily on derivative instruments like protective puts and futures to mitigate downside. However, student-managed portfolios operate under strict regulatory and educational constraints, and lack continuous oversight required for active derivative management. Academic literature on regime-switching models and tactical asset allocation demonstrates that economic regimes influence portfolio returns, yet practical implementation studies for long-only investors remain underdeveloped. Limited empirical work examines whether systematic allocation adjustments based on regime identification provide downside protection comparable to derivative-based hedging strategies. We seek to address the research …

Proceedings of GREAT Day
From welcoming our new president to the excitement of A Whale of a Time festival, this was a year of collaboration and new allies expressing the spirit of the liberal arts. This issue of The Proceedings of GREAT Day highlights that same spirit through works addressing the role of religion in dismantling inequality, exploring the exciting world of knots and integrals, and investigating the past (and present) of our very own campus. Delve deeper into the GREAT work of SUNY Geneseo’s students in this year’s issue of The Proceedings of GREAT Day.

Cholera, Community, And Commiseration: A Social Historical Look At The 1854 London Cholera Epidemic, Emily Meisenzahl
Proceedings of GREAT Day
Although people are most impacted by epidemics, a majority of the existing scholarship on Victorian London, public health, and the London cholera epidemics are based in political and economic history rather than lived, bottom-up narratives. The scholarship on the 1854 cholera epidemic, for instance, almost exclusively centers physician John Snow and largely ignores social history. Therefore, my thesis builds upon and contributes to these existing fields by focusing on the lived experience of the 1854 cholera epidemic among everyday urban residents. Through this paper, I intend to highlight how Londoners utilized letters and petitioning, Punch Magazine, and the “To the …
