Participatory Plant Breeding In Uruguay, D. Real, G. A. Ferreira, D. F. Risso, C. Mas
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The introduction of forage legumes into the native pastures of Uruguay is considered an environmentally safe method with which to increase the level of production through the addition of biologically fixed nitrogen. An integrated plant breeding programme was initiated at INIA (National Agricultural Research Institute), Uruguay, with the aim of developing forage legumes able to persist and produce in co-existence with the native (grass dominant) vegetation under cattle and sheep grazing. The programme was conducted in parallel with rhizobial strain selection. During 1998 to 2001 at Glencoe Research Station (32o 01'32"S lat; 57o 00o 39"W long), 326 …

Adapting The Cropgro Model To Predict Growth And Perennial Nature Of Bahiagrass, S. J. Rymph, K. J. Boote, J. W. Jones
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this research was to modify an existing crop growth model for ability to predict growth and composition of bahiagrass (Paspalm notatum Flügge) in response to daily weather and management inputs. The CROPGRO-CSM cropping systems model has a generic, process-oriented structure that allows inclusion of new species and simulating cropping sequences and crop rotations. An early adaptation of CROPGRO-CSM "species files" for bahiagrass over-predicted growth during late fall through early spring, and totally failed in re-growth if all foliage was lost from freeze damage. Revised species parameters and use of "pest damage" offered only a partial solution. …

An Interactive, Web-Based Module To Teach The Principles Of Silage Fermentation, M. H. Hall
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The forage-livestock industry represents a major agricultural enterprise throughout the world. In the United States, forages comprise 40-60% of the dairy cow's diet with many producers feeding 50-100% of this forage as silage (Kempisty, 1997). Harvesting forages as silage continues to increase as the size of farms increase and the mechanisation of silage harvesting allows timely harvest of a greater area. There are many factors that affect the quality of silage and producers need to better understand these factors to optimise their silage making process. Our objective was to develop a web-based learning module to help users better understand the …

Canasta - Crop Niche Selection For Tropical Agriculture, A Spatial Decision Support System, R. O'Brien, M. Peters, R. Corner, S. Cook
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Farmers in the developing world frequently find themselves in uncertain and risky environments, often having to make decisions based on very little information. Risks for smallholder farmers are often critical because of their poverty. In addition, in the tropics and subtropics, the natural environment is spatially and temporally variable and often harsh, thereby increasing the uncertainty faced by these farmers. This research aims to improve forage adoption decisions in the developing world, thereby increasing sustainable intensification and ultimately contributing to increased sustainable world food production and the alleviation of under-nutrition.

N-Mineralisation And Phosphorous: Important Elements In Decision Support For Grassland Systems, A. Lisbeth Nielsen, C. C. Hoffmann
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Leaching of N and P from extensively managed grasslands on organic soils varies considerably. In environmentally sensitive areas it is important to diminish leaching by appropriate agricultural management. In Denmark low grazing intensity and management without fertilisation have been given a high priority. The type of soil has not been equally in focus, and it seems that the effect of cutting, compared to grazing, resulting in a higher removal of nutrients (e.g. Benke et al., 1992) can be used more strategically. The objective of this case study was to combine data from management strategies with data from leaching examinations …

The Analytic Solution Of Non-Linear Burgers–Huxley Equations Using The Tanh Method, Kabir Oluwatobi Idowu, Adedapo Chris Loyinmi
Al-Bahir
The emergence of the Burgers-Huxley equation (which involves the famous Burgers equation and the Huxley equation) to predict response systems, dispersion moves, and nerve charge transmission in traffic patterns, sound, turbulent conditions theory, hydrodynamics has attracted the attention of scientists to provide reliable and efficient solutions to the problem. The present work employed the Tanh method to solve the Burgers-Huxley nonlinear partial differential equations. In contrast to previous results with complicated and laborious solution characteristics, this method is accurate, efficient, and requires little computational work. In showing this, we solved four Burgers-Huxley case study problems using the Tanh approach and …
Application Geological Strength Index (Gsi) Quantification Method On The Characterization Of Carbonate Rock Mass, Singgih Saptono, Danu Mirza Rezky
Application Geological Strength Index (Gsi) Quantification Method On The Characterization Of Carbonate Rock Mass, Singgih Saptono, Danu Mirza Rezky
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Determining GSI as a representation of the presence of rock mass in slope analysis continues to develop. The development of the quantitative GSI method was carried out because the basic (qualitative) GSI values were deemed too subjective so the results from the use of the quantitative GSIwere expected to be more objective and accurate. The method used is to combine 3 GSI quantitative methods to find GSI based on surface conditions and joint structure. The results showed that the Quantitative GSI value was smaller than the GSI predictive value (qualitative). The GSI approach with RQD and UCS parameters is also …

Animal studies implicate one-carbon metabolism and DNA methylation genes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development in the setting of metabolic perturbations. Using human samples, we investigated the associations between common and rare variants in these closely related biochemical pathways and risk for metabolic HCC development in a multicenter international study. We performed targeted exome sequencing of 64 genes among 556 metabolic HCC cases and 643 cancer-free controls with metabolic conditions. Multivariable logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusting for multiple comparisons. Gene-burden tests were used for rare variant associations. Analyses were performed in …

Uncoupling System And Environment Simulation Cells For Fast-Scaling Modeling Of Complex Continuum Embeddings, G. Medrano, E. Bainglass, O. Andreussi
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Continuum solvation models are becoming increasingly relevant in condensed matter simulations, allowing to characterize materials interfaces in the presence of wet electrified environments at a reduced computational cost with respect to all atomistic simulations. However, some challenges with the implementation of these models in plane-wave simulation packages still persists, especially when the goal is to simulate complex and heterogeneous environments. Among these challenges is the computational cost associated with large heterogeneous environments, which in plane-wave simulations has a direct effect on the basis-set size and, as a result, on the cost of the electronic structure calculation. Moreover, the use of …

Hesi A2 Predictability Of Student Success, Cindy Smith
Hesi A2 Predictability Of Student Success, Cindy Smith
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The nursing shortage has been linked to student retention and success in nursing education. Arkansas State University Beebe’s (ASUB) Practical Nursing program has experienced poor retention of students, which has indirectly affected the staffing of community healthcare partners. According to Twidwell et al. (2018), the Health Education Systems Incorporated Admission Assessment (HESI A2) positively correlated to student success. The ASUB nursing program acceptance protocol consists of ranking applicants related to HESI A2 composite scores without benchmark scores. Therefore, this Quality Improvement Project’s purpose was to determine if the students admitted to the program with a composite score of 75% or …

More Is Better Than One: The Effect Of Ensembling On Deep Learning Performance In Biochemical Prediction Problems, Jacob A. Stern
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents two papers addressing important biochemical prediction challenges. The first paper focuses on accurate protein distance predictions and introduces updates to the ProSPr network. We evaluate its performance in the Critical Assessment of techniques for Protein Structure Prediction (CASP14) competition, investigating its accuracy dependence on sequence length and multiple sequence alignment depth. The ProSPr network, an ensemble of three convolutional neural networks (CNNs), demonstrates superior performance compared to individual networks. The second paper addresses the issue of accurate ligand ranking in virtual screening for drug discovery. We propose MILCDock, a machine learning consensus docking tool that leverages predictions …
Federal Climate Policy Successes: Co-Benefits, Business Acceptance, And Partisan Politics, Roger Karapin, David Vogel
Federal Climate Policy Successes: Co-Benefits, Business Acceptance, And Partisan Politics, Roger Karapin, David Vogel
Publications and Research
While most literature on federal climate change policies has focused on failures to adopt broad policies, this article describes and explains successes in two important sectors. Regulations to improve the fuel economy of motor vehicles and efficiency standards for appliances and equipment have produced substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions although they largely have other goals and hence can be considered implicit climate policies.
We synthesize existing literature with our analyses of case studies to offer three explanations for the adoption of effective sectoral policies in these two sectors. First, the policies delivered politically popular co-benefits such as reducing consumers’ …

Evaluating The Osteogenic Potential Of Raspberry Ketone And Simvastatin Dual-Loaded Electrospun Chitosan Membranes On Preosteoblasts, Matthew T. Atwill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study evaluated the osteogenic potential of dual-loading raspberry ketone (RK) and simvastatin (SMV) onto electrospun chitosan membranes (ESCMs) to impart bioactivity onto guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes and give them a more active role in osteodifferentiation. In this study, W-20-17 cells in media exposed to 12-100µg/ml RK in combination with 75-150ng/ml SMV resulted in increased basal alkaline phosphatase (ALP) expression, whereas RK groups alone had no effect on ALP expression. Additionally, there was a dose-dependent combinatory cytotoxic effect in which SMV in combination with increasing concentrations of RK resulted in decreased viability and vice versa. RK+SMV combinations were loaded …

Commissioning The Tomographic Ionized-Carbon Mapping Experiment, Benjamin James Vaughan
Theses
Line intensity mapping is a novel technique that traces the evolution of cosmological structure sourcing a particular emission line through measurements of the aggregate emission of all galaxies along a line of sight. The Tomographic Ionized-carbon Mapping Experiment (TIME) is a far infrared waveguide imaging spectrometer that operates from 183-323 GHz, allowing it to trace the emission of the singly ionized carbon fine structure line ([CII], 157.7 µm) from redshift 5 to 9 to probe the infrared emission from star formation during the Epoch of Reionization. Further, TIME will also perform line intensity mapping observations of several carbon monoxide rotational …
3d Computational Modeling Of Multiphase Phenomena In Boiling Heat Transfer, Winston O. James Iii
3d Computational Modeling Of Multiphase Phenomena In Boiling Heat Transfer, Winston O. James Iii
Theses
Boiling heat transfer is used in industrial processes, such as heat exchangers, nuclear reactors, and high-powered electronics. There is a need to generate effective heat dissipation techniques to increase the operation limits of these technologies. To enhance heat dissipation with boiling flows, it is important to study boiling phenomena from a fundamental perspective to identify the relation between the fluid and heat transfer behavior near the interface during bubble growth. Boiling simulations have been used as a tool to visualize and quantify the heat transfer mechanisms near the interface. However, challenges exist in modeling bubble growth with a sharp interface …

Analyzing The Impact Of Process-Oriented Technology In Programming Education, Kate Arendes
Theses
Currently, there exist several factors in programming education that deter novice programmers. Computer science students are often significantly penalized for programs that do not compile, reflecting how current teaching standards are focused on the product of the student’s efforts, rather than the independent pieces of code that would otherwise execute properly. Novice programmers struggle with interpreting error messages that identify where and why a program failed, but are written with the assumption that the author already has mastered the fundamental concepts that they are trying to implement. In the classroom, educators may show presentations with pre-written code or perform live …

The e-NABLE Project has created a worldwide network of passionate volunteers who utilize 3D printing technology to provide prosthetic hands to individuals who may not otherwise be able to obtain one. Most of these recipients are children in underdeveloped countries who have suffered from Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS) and cannot seek expensive medical prosthetics. ABS occurs when fibrous bands from the amniotic sac wrap tightly around a fetus’s extremities (most commonly fingers), restricting blood flow and ultimately resulting in complete amputation. The e-NABLE Project’s prosthesis utilizes the functional wrist and fingerless palm to push against the device, contracting the mechanical …

The proliferation of mobile devices allows financial institutions to offer remote customer services, such as remote account opening. Manipulation of identity documents using image processing software is a low-cost, high-risk threat to modern financial systems, opening these institutions to fraud through crimes related to identity theft. In this paper we describe our exploratory research into the application of biomedical image algorithms to the domain of document recapture detection. We perform a statistical analysis to compare different types of recaptured documents and train a support vector machine classifier on the raw histogram data generated using the Meijering filter. The results show …
