The advent of large language models (LLMs) and their adoption by the legal community has given rise to the question: what types of legal reasoning can LLMs perform? To enable greater study of this question, we present LegalBench: a collaboratively constructed legal reasoning benchmark consisting of 162 tasks covering six different types of legal reasoning. LegalBench was built through an interdisciplinary process, in which we collected tasks designed and hand-crafted by legal professionals. Because these subject matter experts took a leading role in construction, tasks either measure legal reasoning capabilities that are practically useful, or measure reasoning skills that lawyers …

Numerical Study Of Solar Receiver Tube With Modified Surface Roughness For Enhanced And Selective Absorptivity In Concentrated Solar Power Tower, Shawn Hatcher, Mathew Z. Farias, Jianzhi Li, Peiwen Li, Ben Xu Sep 2023

Numerical Study Of Solar Receiver Tube With Modified Surface Roughness For Enhanced And Selective Absorptivity In Concentrated Solar Power Tower, Shawn Hatcher, Mathew Z. Farias, Jianzhi Li, Peiwen Li, Ben Xu

Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

Concentrated solar power (CSP) is a reliable renewable energy source that is progressively lowering its cost of energy. However, the heat loss due to reflected and emitted radiation hinders the maximum achievable thermal efficiency for solar receiver tubes on the solar tower. Current solar selective coatings cannot withstand the high temperatures that come with state-of-the-art CSP towers often needing to be recoated soon after initial operation. We intend to use Inconel 718 with different additive manufacturing (AM) practices to construct surfaces that allow for more light-trapping to occur. By adjusting printing parameters, we can tailor a surface to allow for …

Exogenous Ketone Supplements For Reducing Anxiety-Related Behavior, Csilla Ari D'Agostino, Dominic Paul D'Agostino

USF Patents

Methods of treating anxiety disorders or reducing anxiety-related behaviors. The methods include administering a therapeutically effective amount of ketone supplementation, such as butanediol, ketone esters (e.g., 1,3-butanediol-acetoacetate diester) and/or ketone salts (e.g., beta-hydroxybutyrate-mineral salt), chronically, sub-chronically, or acutely, with or without admixture with a medium chain triglyceride or in combination. It was determined herein that ketone supplementation reduced anxiety in rats on elevated plus maze as measured by less entries to closed arms, more time spent in open arms, more distance travelled in open arms, and delayed latency to entrance to closed arms, when compared to control. Along with reducing …

Non-Hermitian Gauged Laser Arrays With Localized Excitations: Anomalous Threshold And Generalized Principle Of Selective Pumping, Li Ge, Zihe Gao, Liang Feng Sep 2023

Non-Hermitian Gauged Laser Arrays With Localized Excitations: Anomalous Threshold And Generalized Principle Of Selective Pumping, Li Ge, Zihe Gao, Liang Feng

Publications and Research

We investigate non-Hermitian skin modes in laser arrays with spatially localized excitation. Intriguingly, we observe an unusual threshold behavior when selectively pumping either the head or the tail of these modes: both cases exhibit the same lasing threshold and hence defy the conventional principle of selective pumping, which aims to maximize the overlap between the pump profile and the target lasing mode. To shed light on this enigma, we reveal a previously overlooked phenomenon, i.e., energy exchange at non-Hermitian coupling junctions with the photonic environment, which does not occur with uniform gain or loss. Utilizing a transfer matrix approach, we …

Seeing Inside Shocked Plastic-Bonded Explosives, Dhanalakshmi Sellan, Lawrence Salvati, Siva Kumar Valluri, Dana D. Dlott, Xuan Zhou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new method is described to study how microstructures within a plastic-bonded explosive (PBX) interact with shock waves to produce hot spots, and to identify the critical hot spots that grow into a deflagration. A unique feature of this method is that it allows us to see every crystal in the PBX during the shock. We used an HMX-based PBX fabricated into a wafer about one crystal thick so there are no crystals hidden from view. The wafer is embedded in a transparent polymer in a traveling wave geometry, and a microscope with a laser flyer launcher and a nanosecond …

Using Multiple Lenses To See An Invisible Group, Kathleen J. Farkas, Jaroslaw Richard Romaniuk Sep 2023

Using Multiple Lenses To See An Invisible Group, Kathleen J. Farkas, Jaroslaw Richard Romaniuk

Faculty Scholarship

Social work in Poland and in the United States shares the values of human dignity and self-determination, but there are often value conflicts in terms of how various groups experience social roles and social expectations. This paper explores the use of multiple lenses to understand the past and current conditions for LGBT+ people in Poland. An international, university-level collaboration uses a framework of “invisible groups” to highlight the needs of those who are on the margins of society and whose human and individual rights are suppressed. The article reviews the results of a recently published on-line survey of LGBT+ populations …

Quantification Of Solution-Free Red Blood Cell Staining By Sorption Kinetics Of Romanowsky Stains To Agarose Gels, Chae Yun Bae, Hamid Esmaeili, Syed A. Zamin, Min Jeong Seol, Eunmi Hwang, Suk Kyung Beak, Younghoon Song, Bhuvnesh Bharti, Jangwook P. Jung

Faculty Publications

The imaging and quantification of stained red blood cells (RBCs) are important for identifying RBCs in hematology and for diagnosing diseased RBCs or parasites in cytopathology. Romanowsky staining has been used traditionally to produce hues in blood cells using a mixture of anionic eosin Y and cationic methylene blue and azure B. While Romanowsky stains have been widely used in cytopathology, end-users have experienced problems with varying results in staining due to the premature precipitation or evaporation of methanol, leading to the inherent inconsistency of solution-based Romanowsky staining. Herein, we demonstrate that the staining and destaining of blood smears are …

Identification Of The Functional Domain Of The Dense Core Vesicle Biogenesis Factor Hid-1, Blake H. Hummer, Theodore Carter, Breanna L. Sellers, Jenna D. Triplett, Cedric S. Asensio Sep 2023

Identification Of The Functional Domain Of The Dense Core Vesicle Biogenesis Factor Hid-1, Blake H. Hummer, Theodore Carter, Breanna L. Sellers, Jenna D. Triplett, Cedric S. Asensio

Biological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

Large dense core vesicles (LDCVs) mediate the regulated release of neuropeptides and peptide hormones. HID-1 is a trans-Golgi network (TGN) localized peripheral membrane protein contributing to LDCV formation. There is no information about HID-1 structure or domain architecture, and thus it remains unknown how HID-1 binds to the TGN and performs its function. We report that the N-terminus of HID-1 mediates membrane binding through a myristoyl group with a polybasic amino acid patch but lacks specificity for the TGN. In addition, we show that the C-terminus serves as the functional domain. Indeed, this isolated domain, when tethered to the TGN, …

Porosity: The Key To Initiating Metallic Composite Particles Under Shock Compression, Siva Kumar Valluri, Edward L. Dreizin, Dana D. Dlott Sep 2023

Porosity: The Key To Initiating Metallic Composite Particles Under Shock Compression, Siva Kumar Valluri, Edward L. Dreizin, Dana D. Dlott

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of metallic composites as additives can potentially improve the energy density of explosives. Before employing them as additives it is imperative to design composites with physically separated metal fuel and oxidizer that can combust on short time scales, tens of nanoseconds, similar to high-performance molecular explosives. Towards that end, sensitizing composite powder particles to shock compression is crucial. In the current work, particle porosity is explored as means to induce hotspot formation within the particle through pore-collapse. Particles of two porous powders, Al-MoO3-KNO3 (equivalence ratio 3) and Al-CuO (equivalence ratio 4) prepared by arrested reactive milling with emulsion …

Machine learning covers a large set of algorithms that can be trained to identify patterns in data. Thanks to the increase in the amount of data and computing power available, it has become pervasive across scientific disciplines. We first highlight why machine learning is needed in marine ecology. Then we provide a quick primer on machine learning techniques and vocabulary. We built a database of ∼1000 publications that implement such techniques to analyse marine ecology data. For various data types (images, optical spectra, acoustics, omics, geolocations, biogeochemical profiles, and satellite imagery), we present a historical perspective on applications that proved …

From A Single Grain To Microstructure: How Explosive Grains Interact Under Shock Compression, Lawrence Salvati, Siva Kumar Valluri, Dana D. Dlott Sep 2023

From A Single Grain To Microstructure: How Explosive Grains Interact Under Shock Compression, Lawrence Salvati, Siva Kumar Valluri, Dana D. Dlott

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We studied the effect of varying the HMX concentration in a plastic-bonded explosive (PBX) by analyzing the time-dependent thermal emission with short (4 ns) duration shocks that produced pressures of about 20 GPa. We found that the HMX tended to aggregate even at the lowest concentrations. Once the cluster size reached about 15 μm, at 30 wt.%, the cluster size started increasing more dramatically, but energy release during deflagration reached a plateau. These observations are consistent with the idea that the clusters act as a limiting factor for hot spot criticality, possibly due to heat loss mechanisms such as conduction …

Study Of Multilayer Flow Of Two Immiscible Nanofluids In A Duct With Viscous Dissipation, Jawali C. Umavathi, Mahanthesh Basavarajappa

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Numerical simulations for the mixed convective multilayer flow of two different immiscible nanofluids in a duct with viscous heating effects were performed in this study. The left and right faces of the duct are maintained to be isothermal, while other side faces are insulated. The mathematical governing system for each layer consists of an incompressibility condition equation, the Navier–Stokes momentum equation, and the conservation of energy equation. At the interface of the immiscible layer, the continuity of velocity, shear stress, temperature, and heat flux are considered. The dimensionless equations governing each layer were numerically integrated using the finite difference method …

Rna World And The Development Of Rna Protocells, Benjamin C. Mayfield Sep 2023

Rna World And The Development Of Rna Protocells, Benjamin C. Mayfield

PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas

Origins of life research, also known as pre-biotic chemistry or astrobiology, aims to unravel the mystery of the first cell’s origin on Earth. This interdisciplinary field encompasses biology, chemistry, and physics, with the primary goal of understanding the conditions necessary for life to emerge from abiotic environments. The RNA world hypothesis suggests that early life initially used RNA instead of DNA to store genomic information and for enzymatic functions. Protocells, membrane-bound entities with metabolic processes and self-replication capabilities, likely preceded the emergence of true cells. The challenges associated with RNA world is currently an active field of research. Advancements in …

Phosphorus And Its Role In Chemical Evolution, Asbel Gonzalez Sep 2023

Phosphorus And Its Role In Chemical Evolution, Asbel Gonzalez

PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas

Phosphorus is a minor element with a cosmic abundance of about 105.5 atoms per 1012 H atoms (Boudreaux, n.d.). Phosphorus was depleted as a volatile throughout the developing solar system, and as a result, volatile forms of phosphorus would have been minimal, even in the colder regions of the solar nebula. Despite its low abundance, phosphorus minerals play key roles in planetary petrology, including through the formation of phosphate minerals that trapped volatiles and rare Earth elements, and in the formation of metal phosphides that may have served as nucleation sites for kamacite and taenite crystal growth in minor planet …

An Investigation Into Energy Generation Using Pseudo-Piezoelectric Foam And Its Applications In Smart Shoes, Sriraj Srihari, Wairimu Mwangi Sep 2023

An Investigation Into Energy Generation Using Pseudo-Piezoelectric Foam And Its Applications In Smart Shoes, Sriraj Srihari, Wairimu Mwangi

Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal

As the human population continues to increase, the demand for energy with this increase has become unsustainable. Fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and crude oil have long been the resources that have supported the generation of energy for populations around the world. In recent years, these resources have been depleted at an alarming rate without significantly being recovered. This means that natural resources are now facing imminent extinction that would catastrophically cripple the daily operations of societies around the globe. As a result, there is a global effort to find alternate and eco-friendly sources of energy sooner rather …

Research On Three-Stage Automatic Hole Packer For Gas Extraction Drilling In Underground Coal Mine, Wang Qingfeng, Shi Shuhan, Xin Dezhong, Chen Hang, Zhang Shitao

Coal Geology & Exploration

In view of the requirements of hole sealing during gas extraction drilling in underground coal mine for manual packer installation and sealing material injection, as well as the low automation level of hole sealing technology, a three-stage automatic hole packer for gas extraction drilling in underground coal mine was developed, with the appearance similar to the drill pipe. The hole packer could be mechanized into the drilling hole by an automatic drilling machine, and realize the automatic injection of sealing material. Herein, the Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic constitutive model was used to represent the strain energy function by the finite element analysis …

Opioid Crisis In Ohio, Alison Ringhiser, Caleb Clayton Sep 2023

Opioid Crisis In Ohio, Alison Ringhiser, Caleb Clayton

Critical Questions

Chronic pain and unnecessary suffering affect many people and healthcare professionals often respond by giving their patients pain relief through a variety of means. Pain assessment goes alongside any vital test medical staff administer to patients, meaning that pain management comes next. Modern technologies allow for innovative practices to help treat patients experiencing chronic pain, but the most common pain-relief methodology is prescription pain-relievers. In the 1990s, opioids were marketed by pharmaceutical companies as reliable pain-relieving drugs. Concerns about their addictive potential were minimized, suggesting they were low-risk substances. Three decades later, evidence has mounted that Americans are in the …
