Life scientists frequently write computer code when doing research. Computer programming can aid researchers in performing tasks that are not supported by existing tools. Programming can also help researchers to implement analytical logic in a way that documents their steps and thus enables others to repeat those steps. Many educational resources are available to teach computer programming, but this skill remains challenging for many researchers and students to master. Artificial-intelligence tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT are able to interpret human-language requests to generate code. Accordingly, we evaluated the extent to which this technology might be used to perform programming tasks described …

Advanced Processing Techniques For Electrospun Nanofibers: Investigating Annealing And Laser Zone-Drawing Effects On Material Characteristics, Matthew D. Flamini
Advanced Processing Techniques For Electrospun Nanofibers: Investigating Annealing And Laser Zone-Drawing Effects On Material Characteristics, Matthew D. Flamini
Theses and Dissertations
Electrospun nanofibers hold potential for a wide range of commercial and scientific applications; however, their properties must be optimized through post-processing treatments to achieve optimal performance. This dissertation investigates the effects of annealing and laser zone-drawing on electrospun nanofiber properties. Annealing polycaprolactone nanofibers at 70°C results in the highest rate of crystallization and molecular alignment, impacting long-term stability and mechanical properties. A multivariate linear model incorporating crystallinity and molecular alignment predicts the material properties resulting from annealing under different conditions. Laser zone-drawing experiments reveal that polylactide fiber thinning under laser irradiation primarily occurs due to drawing rather than ablation. Steady-state …

Cabozantinib And Il-27 Combinatorial Therapy For Bone-Metastatic Prostate Cancer, Shreya Kumar, Grace E. Mulia, Marxa L. Figueiredo
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Introduction: Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among American men. Prostate tumor cells exhibit significant tropism for the bone and once metastasis occurs, survival rates fall significantly. Current treatment options are not curative and focus on symptom management. Immunotherapies are rapidly emerging as a possible therapeutic option for a variety of cancers including prostate cancer, however, variable patient response remains a concern. Chemotherapies, like cabozantinib, can have immune-priming effects which sensitize tumors to immunotherapies. Additionally, lower doses of chemotherapy can be used in this context which can reduce patient side effects. We hypothesized that a combination …

Spam emails have become a pervasive issue in recent years, as internet users receive increasing amounts of unwanted or fake emails. To combat this issue, automatic spam detection methods have been proposed, which aim to classify emails into spam and non-spam categories. Machine learning techniques have been utilized for this task with considerable success. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to spam email detection by presenting significant advancements to the Dandelion Optimizer (DO) algorithm. The DO is a relatively new nature-inspired optimization algorithm inspired by the flight of dandelion seeds. While the DO shows promise, it faces challenges, …

Protein synthesis is frequently dysregulated in cancer and selective inhibition of mRNA translation represents an attractive cancer therapy. Here, we show that therapeutically targeting the RNA helicase eIF4A by Zotatifin, the first-in-class eIF4A inhibitor, exerts pleiotropic effects on both tumor cells and the tumor immune microenvironment in a diverse cohort of syngeneic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) mouse models. Zotatifin not only suppresses tumor cell proliferation but also directly repolarizes macrophages towards an M1-like phenotype and inhibits neutrophil infiltration, which sensitizes tumors to immune checkpoint blockade. Mechanistic studies revealed that Zotatifin reprograms the tumor translational landscape, inhibits the translation of Sox …

Although several reports have hypothesized that exercise may increase skeletal muscle protein lactylation, empirical evidence in humans is lacking. Thus, we adopted a multifaceted approach to examine if acute and subchronic resistance training (RT) altered skeletal muscle protein lactylation levels. In mice, we also sought to examine if surgical ablation-induced plantaris hypertrophy coincided with increases in muscle protein lactylation. To examine acute responses, participants’ blood lactate concentrations were assessed before, during, and after eight sets of an exhaustive lower body RT bout (n = 10 trained college-aged men). Vastus lateralis biopsies were also taken before, 3-h post, and 6-h post-exercise …

Perceptual Cue-Guided Adaptive Image Downscaling For Enhanced Semantic Segmentation On Large Document Images, Chulwoo Pack, Leen-Kiat Soh, Elizabeth Lorang
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Image downscaling is an essential operation to reduce spatial complexity for various applications and is becoming increasingly important due to the growing number of solutions that rely on memory-intensive approaches, such as applying deep convolutional neural networks to semantic segmentation tasks on large images. Although conventional content-independent image downscaling can efficiently reduce complexity, it is vulnerable to losing perceptual details, which are important to preserve. Alternatively, existing content-aware downscaling severely distorts spatial structure and is not effectively applicable for segmentation tasks involving document images. In this paper, we propose a novel image downscaling approach that combines the strengths of both …

Design And Characterization Of 2.4ghz Antennas For Wireless Sensor Applications, Luis Zogby Brennan
Dissertations and Theses
Wireless sensor networks benefit greatly from advances in circuit integration and miniaturization. However, antennas are bound to specific geometries both in terms of fundamental limits and their response to immediate surroundings. As such, various successful techniques for antenna miniaturization must still be carefully tested and characterized as part of the design process of a sensor system. The work presented here fully characterizes a number of miniaturized 2.4GHz antennas and successfully integrates designs into a sensor system using the highly integrated Single Chip Micro Mote (SCµM), which uses a crystal-less radio design resulting in the requirement of only a …

Associations Between Plasma, Imaging, And Cerebrospinal Fluid Biomarkers With Driving Behavior And Cognitive Tests: Implications For Biomarker Usefulness, Catherine M Roe, Sayeh Bayat, Ganesh M Babulal
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Declines in instrumental activities of daily living like driving are hallmarks sequelae of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although driving has been shown to be associated with traditional imaging and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers, it is possible that some biomarkers have stronger associations with specific aspects of driving behavior. Furthermore, associations between newer plasma biomarkers and driving behaviors are unknown.
OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the extent to which individual plasma, imaging, and CSF biomarkers are related to specific driving behaviors and cognitive functions among cognitively normal older adults.
METHODS: We analyzed naturalistic driving behavior from cognitively healthy older drivers (N = …

Inducible gene expression systems are important for studying bacterial gene function, yet most exhibit leakage. In this study, we engineered a leakage-free hybrid system for precise gene expression controls in Fusobacterium nucleatum by integrating the xylose-inducible expression system with the theophylline-responsive riboswitch. This innovative method enables concurrent control of target gene expression at both transcription and translation initiation levels. Using luciferase and the indole-producing enzyme tryptophanase (TnaA) as reporters, we demonstrated that the hybrid system displays virtually no observable signal in the absence of inducers. We employed this system to express FtsX, a protein related to fusobacterial cytokinesis, in an …

Asymmetric Electrode-Electrolyte Interfaces For High-Performance Rechargeable Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Jia Chou, Ya-Hui Wang, Wen-Peng Wang, Sen Xin, Yu-Guo Guo
Journal of Electrochemistry
With a high cell-level specific energy and a low cost, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery has been intensively studied as one of the most promising candidates for competing the next-generation energy storage campaign. Currently, the practical use of Li-S battery is hindered by the rapidly declined storage performance during battery operation, as caused by irreversible loss of electroactive sulfide species at the cathode, dendrite formation at the anode and parasitic reactions at the electrode-electrolyte interface due to unfavorable cathode-anode crosstalk. In this perspective, we propose to stabilize the Li-S electrochemistry, and improve the storage performance of battery by designing asymmetric electrode-electrolyte interfaces …

Hydrophobicity Optimization Of Cathode Catalyst Layer For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell, Hao-Jie Chen, Mei-Hua Tang, Sheng-Li Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
Hydrophobicity of the cathode catalyst layers (CCLs) crucially determines the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) by affecting the transports of oxygen and liquid water. In this regard, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is usually used as a hydrophobic additive to facilitate the oxygen and water transports in CCLs. So far, there remains lacking systematic effort to optimize the addition methods of PTFE in CCLs and the mechanisms behind. In this work, the effects of the approaches for PTFE addition and the distribution of PTFE on the mass transport of oxygen and the proton conduction in CCLs were studied by using …

Dependence Of Heat Transfer Model On The Structure Of Electrically Coil-Heated Microelectrodes, Ju Li, Sen Yang, Jian-Jun Sun
Journal of Electrochemistry
Electrically heated microelectrodes have gained much attention in electroanalytical chemistry in recent years. It has been shown that the promotion of mass transport and reaction kinetics at high-temperatures often results in increased current signals. However, there is no study about the heat transfer inner the microelectrodes which is necessary for the design and operation for microsensors. This report introduces a finite element software (COMSOL) to analyze the factors that influence the surface temperature (Ts), which is crucial for the heating ability of micro-disk electrodes with coils. Distances between the electrode surface and the bottom of the heated copper …

Three-Dimensional Two-Phase Cfd Simulation Of Alkaline Electrolyzers, Ling-Yu Gao, Lin Yang, Chen-Hui Wang, Gui-Xuan Shan, Xin-Yi Huo, Meng-Fei Zhang, Wei Li, Jin-Li Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
The structural and operation parameters of the electrolyzer play important roles in the efficiency of alkaline water electrolysis. In this article, a three-dimensional numerical model coupled with the electric field and the Euler-Eulerian k-ε turbulence flow field was first established to simulate accurately the performance of alkaline electrolyzers, based on a compact assembly structure of the industrial alkaline water electrolyzers, especially at current densities higher than 5000 A·m–2. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data to verify the accuracy of the model. Suitable operating conditions for concentration, flow rate and the optimal design method of the …

Scaling language models for inference can be difficult due to the computational resource requirement. LLM deployments typically include computational resources for the LLM itself and additional resources that run separate hand-turned or learned models for resource allocation. The overall complexity of resource configuration for server-based LLM deployments includes that for the LLM itself as well as that for the separate models. This disclosure describes the use of a language model to perform its own computational resource management. Per the techniques, resource management metadata is provided as input to the language model as an additional input along with the incoming query. …

Text Recycling (Aka “Self-Plagiarism") In Research Writing: Thorny Issues And Best Practices, Cary Moskovitz
Bear GRADS
Researchers often have reason to reuse content from their prior papers in their new ones (descriptions of methods, background material, theoretical frameworks, and so on). Some uses of text recycling are widely considered appropriate; others are universally condemned. Given the variety of ways that researchers might recycle text, they are often unsure about what is and isn't ethical or legal. This talk will present the ethical and legal complexities of text recycling in research writing, present a new taxonomy of text recycling, and explain best practices for recycling material across a range of research contexts.

Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
The “core” of an engineering degree program typically comprises the concepts, equations, and technical skills needed, as well as their practical application to common problems of the profession. This core is then divided into the “content” that must be covered in each course. It is widely recognized, however, that successful individuals do not thrive as professionals on content alone. Thus, there is significant and increasing emphasis across higher education to “educate the whole person.” These efforts aim to develop “deep” qualities like grit, critical thinking, perseverance, learning from failure, valuing diversity, teamwork, leadership, curiosity, recognizing opportunity, creating value, and acting …
