Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students
While promising as an energy production alternative through its sustainability and wastewater treatment utility, a microbial fuel cell is not widely used due to its low power output and high cost. The development of advanced electrode materials is currently being pursued to solve this problem. A zinc-graphene quantum dot nanocomposite was modeled using percolation theory as a prospective advanced electrode material. During extracellular electron transfer, the electrical conductivity properties of the material were studied through cellular percolation models, percolation probability functions, and electrical conductivity curves. These models were compared against those of the conventional graphite electrodes and the leading graphene …

Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students
Pharmaceutically-active compounds (PHACs) such as analgesics, antibiotics, hormones, and antiseptics have been proven beneficial to human life as they can cure illnesses and increase life expectancy. However, heightened usage has led to their emergence in various bodies of water. This has negatively impacted humankind and the environment due to these compounds’ toxicity levels and adverse health effects on living organisms. Therefore, this systematic literature review evaluated the existing literature on the diffusion coefficients of various PHACs. The diffusion coefficient of these compounds serves as a parameter that measures their transport through hydrological mediums and is inversely proportional to molecular size. …

The advancement of urbanization in the Philippines changed natural lands into impervious surfaces and aided the contamination of surface runoff and nearby water bodies. Low Impact Development (LID) technologies were introduced as an alternative to conventional drainage systems, specifically permeable pavements. Such technology is beneficial for stormwater runoff reduction, ground infiltration enablement, and stormwater treatment. This research was conducted to investigate the feasibility of permeable pavement for sustainable stormwater management in a university setting, particularly in De La Salle University – Laguna Campus. The Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was utilized to simulate different rainfall scenarios on selected little to …

Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students
With the increasing worldwide demand for eggs, the continuous accumulation of these poses environmental threats because of their support for microbiological action. However, the fact that eggshells have high calcium content motivated researchers to explore their potential use as fertilizer for various plant species. Despite this, most studies only focused on applying eggshell fertilizers in solid form. Meanwhile, research on boosting bell pepper production remains sparse in the Philippines despite its increasing demand. This study examined the capabilities of eggshell tea, a liquid form of eggshell fertilizer, by determining which concentration would be most effective and least effective in growing …

Many neurons exhibit regular firing that is limited to the duration and intensity of depolarizing stimuli. However, some neurons exhibit all-or-nothing plateau potentials that, once elicited, can lead to prolonged activity that is independent of stimulus intensity or duration. To better understand this diversity of information processing, we compared the voltage-gated and Ca2+-gated currents of three identified neurons from hermaphroditic Aplysia californica. Two of these neurons, B51 and B64, generated plateau potentials and a third neuron, B8, exhibited regular firing and was incapable of generating a plateau potential. With the exception of the Ca2+-gated potassium …

Becoming What One Is: Nietzsche And Buddhism - A Transcultural Perspective, Sarah Linda Jacob
Becoming What One Is: Nietzsche And Buddhism - A Transcultural Perspective, Sarah Linda Jacob
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) prophetically called himself an untimely philosopher. But what inspired this untimely genius? In what follows, I argue that Nietzsche’s philosophical departure from the Western metaphysical and epistemological tradition marks a paradigm shift enabled by the European encounter with the East. My thought is that the “untimely” philosopher was very timely—timelier than his educators and philosophical compadres—because he recognized that the Western religious and philosophical system would be, and had to be, forever altered due to the confrontation with new ontological horizons enabled by new, wholly foreign, perspectives. My argument is founded upon the historical significance of India …

With the shift towards on-demand services in society, healthcare is also affected by this trend. Instead of waiting for weeks or months to …
The Performance Of Subgrid-Scale Models In Large-Eddy Simulation Of Langmuir Circulation In Shallow Water With The Finite Volume Method, Seyed Mohammad Javad Zeidi
The Performance Of Subgrid-Scale Models In Large-Eddy Simulation Of Langmuir Circulation In Shallow Water With The Finite Volume Method, Seyed Mohammad Javad Zeidi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Wind and wave-driven Langmuir circulation (LC) in the upper ocean mixed layer and in shallow inner shelf regions of the coastal ocean has been extensively studied via field measurements and numerical simulations by the ocean turbulence-physical oceanography community. LC consists of counter rotating vortices or cells induced by the wind and surface gravity waves. As with all turbulence regimes, LC is characterized by a wide range of scales, with the largest and most energetic LC scales serving to promote vertical transport (and thereby mixing). However, numerical studies and field measrements of Langmuir turbulence under the influence of coastal boundaries and …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
How does the quantum-to-classical transition of measurement occur? This question is vital for both foundations and applications of quantum mechanics. Here, we develop a new measurement-based framework for characterizing the classical and quantum free electron–photon interactions and then experimentally test it. We first analyze the transition from projective to weak measurement in generic light–matter interactions and show that any classical electron-laserbeam interaction can be represented as an outcome of weak measurement. In particular, the appearance of classical point-particle acceleration is an example of an amplified weak value resulting from weak measurement. A universal factor, exp(-Γ2/2) , quantifies the …

Wave Interactions With A Cylinder Surrounded By An Arc-Shaped Breakwater, Hui Liang, Siming Zheng, Yanlin Shao, Peiwen Cong, Deborah Greaves
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Inspired by the energy island used for energy storage, conversion, and transmission, this study explores the water wave interactions with a bottom-standing cylinder surrounded by an arc-shaped breakwater of negligible thickness. The arc-shaped breakwater can be either impermeable or porous. To analyze the problem, a semi-analytical matched eigenfunction expansion method is developed within the framework of linear potential flow theory. The fluid domain is divided into subdomains, with the velocity potentials in each subdomain expressed as eigenfunction expansions. Matching conditions, ensuring continuity in pressure and normal velocity, are imposed at the juncture boundary. The accuracy of the developed semi-analytical method …

Intellectual Property And “The Lost Year” Of Covid-19 Deaths, Madhavi Sunder, Haochen Sun
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Protecting intellectual property (IP) is a question of life and death. COVID-19 vaccines, partially incentivized by IP, are estimated to have saved nearly 20 million lives worldwide during the first year of their availability in 2021. However, most of the benefits of this life-saving technology went to high- and upper-middle-income countries. Despite 10 billion vaccines being produced by the end of 2021, only 4 percent of people in low-income countries were fully vaccinated. Paradoxically, IP may also be partly responsible for hundreds of thousands of lives lost in 2021, due to an insufficient supply of vaccines and inequitable access during …

Predictive Modelling Of Road Deterioration Using An Artificially Intelligent Bayesian Belief Networks Approach, Babitha Elizabeth Philip
Predictive Modelling Of Road Deterioration Using An Artificially Intelligent Bayesian Belief Networks Approach, Babitha Elizabeth Philip
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
The ability to predict road deterioration is the cornerstone for developing a reliable Pavement Management System (PMS) that optimizes pavement maintenance programs. Such prediction capacity becomes increasingly important, especially when highway agency funds are confined. This research focuses on the development of prediction models based on an artificial intelligence technique, Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN), that aid decision-makers in forecasting expected road distress curves on the lights of various (e.g., environmental, traffic, and road-specific) factors and maintenance decisions. The novelty of this research revolves around deploying BBNs which allow analysts to yield Markovian predictions of annual road deterioration based on incomplete …

A Data-Efficient Approach For Effective Diagnosis Of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy From Echocardiography Modality, Moomal Farhad Farhad
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Left Ventricular Hypertrophy (LVH) is a medical condition characterized by the thickening and enlargement of the left ventricle (LV) of the heart. Accurate and timely diagnosis of LVH is vital for clinical prognosis and treatment decisions. Echocardiography has emerged as the gold standard for diagnosing LVH due to its ability to independently predict long-term risks such as heart failure and stroke. Echocardiography, a non-invasive and cost-effective imaging technology, is instrumental in assessing various aspects of heart health. Among the critical diagnostic calculations made possible by echocardiography, the determination of ejection fraction and heart chamber size is paramount in assessing LVH. …

Of Foxes, Dancing Bears, And Wolves, John Rosegrant
Journal of Tolkien Research
When in “On Fairy-stories” Tolkien expressed his Faërian wish to understand the proper speech of animals, he was longing to relate with animals in a way that combined communion with them and respect for their separate natures. But the exuberance with which Tolkien expressed this wish changed over time. His early writings are rampant with talking animals and other forms of human-animal condensation in which the animals nevertheless retain their own agency; later in life he grew uneasy with what he now believed to be unrealistic and un-Catholic formulations. Nevertheless, the Faërian wish was so important to him that he …
