The Nexus Between Economic Growth, Energy Consumption, Technology Innovation, And Co2 Emissions In Vietnam, Ha Thi Thu Nguyen
The Nexus Between Economic Growth, Energy Consumption, Technology Innovation, And Co2 Emissions In Vietnam, Ha Thi Thu Nguyen
Economic and Business Review
Vietnam's rapid economic growth has intensified environmental pressures, heightening concerns about the country's ability to decouple growth from rising CO2 emissions. Although green policies and initiatives have been introduced, questions remain regarding their effectiveness and the extent to which technological innovation and renewable energy can mitigate environmental degradation. This study applies the stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence, and technology (STIRPAT) framework and autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to investigate the short- and long-run impacts of economic growth, foreign direct investment (FDI), technological innovation, renewable energy consumption, and forest area on CO2 emissions in Vietnam, using annual …

``Urban Expansion And Its Relationship To The Development Of New Cities (Applied Study On The New Egyptian Cities)'', Tarek Abdel Latif Abou El Atta, Aliaa Mamdouh Mahmoud
HBRC Journal
The Egyptian government adopted a policy of establishing new cities to address urban challenges such as rapid population growth and unbalanced population distribution, with the aim of redistributing residents and achieving more balanced urban development. However, many of these cities have not achieved their planned population growth, despite the continued issuance of urban expansion decisions, raising questions about the alignment of these decisions with demographic and developmental realities. This study aims to evaluate urban expansion decisions in Egypt's new cities by analyzing their relationship with urban development factors and the city's capacity to attract residents, as well as examining their …

Robust And Efficient Trajectory Tracking For Robotic Manipulators Via An Optimally Tuned Adaptive Integral Sliding Mode Controller, Tareq A. Sultan, Abbas H. Issa, Layla H. Abood
Engineering and Technology Journal
A robust Optimized Adaptive Integral Sliding Mode Controller (OAISMC) is proposed for high-precision trajectory tracking and chattering suppression of a 3-DOF where high decoupling rigid multi-body dynamics robotic manipulator in the presence of nonlinearities, parametric uncertainties, and external disturbances. The controller is designed to overcome strong joint coupling around an integral sliding surface, which eliminates the reaching phase and ensures robustness throughout the entire operation. Adaptive laws are incorporated to update the switching gains online without requiring a priori knowledge of disturbance bounds. The free design parameters of the controller are optimally tuned using the Osprey Optimization Algorithm (OOA) and …

The City As Showroom: Singapore And The Rise Of The "Urban Solutions" Industry, Sol Andrew Stokols
The City As Showroom: Singapore And The Rise Of The "Urban Solutions" Industry, Sol Andrew Stokols
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This article uses the concept of the “city as showroom” to describe an emergent logic shaping urban development that stems from the growing importance of “urban solutions” as an industry. Focusing primarily on Singapore, the article examines how certain urban districts and high-profile sites are conceptualized as “showrooms” for the infrastructure and urban technologies they aim to export around the world. The idea of the “city as showroom” combines aspects of the curation of a city’s image through showcase districts, as well as “testbed urbanism” seen in certain smart-city projects. Singapore's need to reproduce itself as a model of urban …
Strategies For Extending The Service Life Of Prestressed Concrete I-Shaped Beams, Sanjoy Kumar Bhowmik
Strategies For Extending The Service Life Of Prestressed Concrete I-Shaped Beams, Sanjoy Kumar Bhowmik
Dissertations
Prestressed concrete (PSC) I-shaped beams are widely used in bridge construction because of their structural efficiency and durability. The service life of these beams is reduced and the maintenance frequency is increased due to the distress during fabrication and subsequent deterioration. Although several mitigation strategies have been proposed and implemented, beam end cracking during fabrication remains a major concern. The causes and mitigation strategies for beam end cracking have been studied for decades, but there have been no comprehensive studies utilizing beam end strains during fabrication and lifting at prefabrication plants under normal operational conditions. Moreover, existing maintenance and repair …
Deployment-Aware Deep Learning For Computer Vision: Efficient Architectures From 3d Segmentation To Mixed Reality, Bahar Uddin Mahmud
Deployment-Aware Deep Learning For Computer Vision: Efficient Architectures From 3d Segmentation To Mixed Reality, Bahar Uddin Mahmud
Dissertations
Deep learning has become the dominant approach for solving vision-centric problems; however, its successful deployment in real-world applications remains limited by high computational cost, data dependency, and insufficient integration with practical and human-centered environments. While state-of-the art deep learning models often achieve impressive performance in controlled settings, they frequently fail to generalize or operate efficiently under deployment constraints such as limited resources, complex data modalities, and real-time interaction requirements. These limitations motivate the need for a deployment-oriented deep learning framework that balances accuracy, efficiency, and practical usability.
This dissertation investigates the design and deployment of efficient deep learning architectures for …

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Senior Theses
The Advanced Water Purification System (AWPS) is designed with multiple treatment units to facilitate potable water reuse of the effluent from the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Palo Alto. The membrane filtration process as well as post treatment conditioning results in a high quality recycled water that has a lower salinity concentration. The membrane filtration process separates the suspended particles such as bacteria, protozoa, and viruses from the WWTP effluent as well as reducing the dissolved solids, salts, smaller organic molecules, and trace contaminants by 90-99%. Then, the air stripping tower removes the excess carbon dioxide increasing the pH from …

Active Galaxies In A New Light: The Broad Line Region In The Near-Infrared, Sky O'Donnell
Active Galaxies In A New Light: The Broad Line Region In The Near-Infrared, Sky O'Donnell
Physics
At the center of most massive galaxies, there is a supermassive black hole with a mass millions to billions of times that of the Sun. In some of these galaxies, so-called Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), the supermassive black hole is converting the gas that falls toward it into radiation energy, creating large amounts of luminosity. AGNs are composed of the central supermassive black hole, its accretion disk, and a region just outside, composed of fast-moving ionized gas clouds called the Broad Line Region (BLR). Using spectra obtained with NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility, we use a technique known as reverberation mapping …

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Even though there is widespread recognition that we need to mine more critical minerals for national security and energy needs, concerns about environmental impacts often lead to public opposition to proposed new mining projects. The literature lacks sufficient data from communities with proposed mineral projects to assess drivers of differences in support. This study investigates public preferences for mining projects in three states in the United States with proposed critical minerals projects, using a discrete choice experiment. Respondents evaluated projects that vary in job creation, state tax revenue, tailings reprocessing content, groundwater impacts, and surface water impacts. We also randomly …
Real Promise For False Claims: A Whistleblower Litigation Strategy To Reward Investigative Journalism, Frank D. Lomonte
Real Promise For False Claims: A Whistleblower Litigation Strategy To Reward Investigative Journalism, Frank D. Lomonte
Washington Law Review
Every year, investigative reporters uncover stories of waste, fraud, and corruption, alerting the government to taxpayer ripoffs that had previously gone undiscovered or ignored. For decades, non-journalists have been reaping windfall rewards—sometimes in the millions—by using false-claims statutes to bring whistleblower actions on the government’s behalf. With news organizations struggling for their economic survival, and efforts to secure alternative financial support through government bailouts faltering, is it time for journalists to seek a share of the money they recoup for taxpayers by becoming plaintiffs?
This Article explores the possibilities, and downside risks, of using the federal False Claims Act, and …

Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Papers
Quantitative measures for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) intensity are needed to ensure safe and consistent application in therapeutic and research settings. However, resting motor thresholds (rMTs), commonly used to determine stimulation intensity, depend on the coil used. Unless motor mapping and treatment coils are identical, re-thresholding is necessary, increasing patient discomfort and potentially introducing variability across studies. These considerations raise an unresolved fundamental question: does individual rMT reflect a consistent cortical electric field (E-field) magnitude independent of coil geometry? We tested the hypothesis that rMT corresponds to a coil-invariant cortical E-field magnitude and evaluated a computational method for predicting stimulator …

Translational equity means ensuring that diagnostics, treatments, care models, and prevention strategies are developed and implemented so they work for populations with the greatest burden and least access to care. In Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), where most evidence derives from highly educated, non-Hispanic White participants at large academic centers, translational equity is critical to prevent misclassification, limited access, and widening disparities and to ensure that underrepresented communities shape how new knowledge moves into practice. Hispanic and other populations in the United States are disproportionately affected by ADRD yet remain underrepresented in research, with gaps especially pronounced in high-poverty …
Still Can’T Kill My Vibe: A Critical Autoethnography Navigating Anti-Blackness As A Student And Teacher—A Black Queer Educator’S Toolkit Towards Joyful Resistance, Mischelle Brown
Social Justice in Educational Leadership EdD Dissertations
This critical autoethnography investigates the intersectional realities of navigating anti- Blackness, systemic racism, and heteronormativity within the American educational landscape. Moving chronologically through the dual lenses of student and teacher, this work unpacks the institutional erasure, surveillance, and microaggressions experienced by Black Queer bodies in academic spaces. Grounded in the theoretical framework of Black Queer Feminism (BQF), this study utilized Epistolary Letter Writing, Education Journey Mapping and Community Cultural Wealth to expose how the education system perpetuates anti-Blackness, white supremacist, heteronormative, patriarchal ideologies. Yet rather than centering trauma as the definitive narrative, this autoethnography elevates the concept of “Joy as …

TWIST1 encodes a highly conserved basic helix–loop–helix transcription factor essential for embryonic development from Drosophila to humans. TWIST1 activity is regulated by post‐translational modifications, including phosphorylation during development and cancer metastasis. Recent cancer studies identified acetylation of lysines K73 and K76 as a novel regulatory modification that shifts TWIST1 from a repressive to an activating state during epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT). However, the developmental and in vivo functions of TWIST1 acetylation remain unknown. To investigate the physiological role, we generated the first acetyl‐deficient Twist1 K73,76R K73,76R and acetyl‐mimic Twist1 K73,76Q K73,76Q mouse models using CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated genome editing. Targeted sequencing confirmed substitutions, …
How To … Coach Problem Representation To Strengthen Diagnostic Reasoning In Trainees, Cody Clary, Adam Cohen, Satid Thammasitboon
How To … Coach Problem Representation To Strengthen Diagnostic Reasoning In Trainees, Cody Clary, Adam Cohen, Satid Thammasitboon
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Problem representation (PR) is a concise synthesis of clinical information that captures the core diagnostic problem in a single statement, often referred to as a 'one-liner'. Although central to diagnostic reasoning, this skill is frequently underdeveloped in medical training. Many trainees struggle to transform clinical data into meaningful representations, which can hinder communication, diagnostic reasoning and patient safety. The Assessment of Reasoning Tool-Reconstructed (ART-R) provides a structured framework that educators can adapt as a coaching rubric to strengthen PR during clinical teaching. Using the ART-R, faculty can guide trainees to refine their PR by focusing on three elements: (1) clarity …
“I Didn’T Know Architects Do This”: Interventions In The Social Reproduction Of The Architect Figure In Ireland., Miriam Delaney
“I Didn’T Know Architects Do This”: Interventions In The Social Reproduction Of The Architect Figure In Ireland., Miriam Delaney
Doctoral
The architect is widely understood as the producer of architectural artefacts: buildings, feasibility studies, drawings, and specifications. However, architects (as a professional collective identity) are themselves produced by the complex matrix of social relations and structural forces in which they act; the architect is as much a product as the architectural artefacts.
This thesis provides a retrospective critical examination of aspects of my work in expanded forms of architectural practice from 2011 to 2021. My Critical Appraisal of this work focuses less on the content or successes of the Outputs, the products of production, and more on their collective contribution …

Animal tracking collars transmit very-high-frequency (VHF) beacon signals so researchers can locate tagged wildlife in terrain where direct visual tracking is difficult. This project develops a radio-frequency (RF) wildlife tracking prototype in which a UAV carries a receiving antenna and receiver over the search area to detect the collar signal and send measurements to a ground station. A transmitter test device was built to emulate a tracking collar. An STM32 microcontroller reads keypad input, controls a digital-to-analog converter (DAC), tunes a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) to the selected VHF frequency, and sends the RF signal through an amplifier and antenna. The …
