Research Status And Development Trend Of Acidification And Permeability Improvement Technology For Low-Permeability Coal Seam, Shaochuan Chen, Yun Lei, Fuchao Tian, Jie Kang
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Low-permeability coal seams in China are often characterized by mineral-clogged pore-fracture systems, severely limiting coalbed methane (CBM) extraction efficiency. Acidification technology, which involves injecting acidic solutions into coal seams to dissolve minerals and enhance permeability, has emerged as a promising approach. This paper systematically reviews the mechanisms, laboratory findings, and field applications of acidification technology for permeability enhancement in low-permeability coal seams. Key findings include significant improvements in pore connectivity, reductions in gas adsorption capacity, and enhanced gas extraction rates post-acidification. Field tests demonstrate that acid fracturing can increase gas extraction volume by 4-7 times. The study also identifies current …

Feasibility Study Of Barite Sourcing From Sediments Emerging Due To Treatment Of Waste Water From Coal Mining, Hubert Makuła, Zbigniew Bzowski, Bogusław Michalik
Journal of Sustainable Mining
The accumulation of mine water in settling ponds, which is discharged due to coal mining, allows them to be cleaned out of suspension, and it is the reason for the accumulation of hundreds of thousands of tons of sediments. One interesting mineral enclosed in these sediments is barite, which is considered in the EU as a critical raw material, but it also contains radium originating from formation water.
The effective barite separation and its beneficiation could constitute a win-win solution because then it would be possible to obtain the valuable radium concentrate for further processing, e.g., in nuclear medicine, and …
Historians For Hire: Evaluating Historian Expert Witnesses After Bruen, Jake Mcauliffe
Historians For Hire: Evaluating Historian Expert Witnesses After Bruen, Jake Mcauliffe
Duke Law Journal
The Supreme Court in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen introduced a history-and-tradition test for Second Amendment challenges, directing courts to compare modern firearm regulations to past ones. To conduct this historical inquiry, litigants and judges have increasingly turned to professional historians as expert witnesses. This Note qualitatively examines how historian experts are used and received in post-Bruen federal litigation. It finds that a small group of repeat players—sixteen historians—make up this emerging field, typically appearing exclusively for either challengers or governments. These historians serve primarily in civil litigation, leaving a relative expertise gap in criminal cases, …
Falsifying Tradition, Darrell A. H. Miller
Falsifying Tradition, Darrell A. H. Miller
Duke Law Journal
From cases spanning gun rights, reproductive freedom, religious liberty, and personal jurisdiction; to separation of powers and other structural features of the Constitution, courts increasingly rely on tradition to guide their decisions. Often, judges appeal to tradition in a vaguely empirical way, as “facts to study, not convictions to demonstrate about,” in the words of Justice Antonin Scalia. Yet, for a claim that purports to be factual, there’s very little agreement, or even analysis, about what renders this factual assertion—tradition—true or false. This Article tackles that basic issue.
Part I surveys the ways in which courts use tradition in different …
Addressing Legal Uncertainties In Article Versions And Institutional Copyright Policies To Support Immediate Public Access To Federal Grant-Funded Publications, Yuanxiao Xu
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
New federal public access policies—mandated by the 2022 OSTP Memo and already adopted by several key federal grant-making agencies—require authors funded by federal grants to deposit peer-reviewed publications for immediate public access. This paper explains how grant- receiving institutions and their affiliated authors can dispel legal uncertainties and comply with the new public access policies. Section I delineates how valid prior licenses enable public deposit of manuscripts notwithstanding later publishing agreements transferring copyright to the journals. Section II discusses the different versions of a manuscript created during the publication process. Section III describes the different types of third-party contributions incorporated …

Court granted respondent's motion for discovery on a de facto rent stabilization claim after petitioner failed to oppose the motion despite three adjournments granted at petitioner's request over six months. Court exercised its authority to decide the motion on default, finding that further adjournment would encourage dilatory behavior, and that there was in any event good cause to allow discovery on the respondent's de facto rent stabilization defense.

Court dismissed nuisance holdover in this Mitchell-Lama cooperative apartment for failure to comply with mandatory notice requirements in the Occupancy Agreement. Petitioner failed to serve a notice to cure and a 30-day notice of termination as required by the Occupancy Agreement's plain language, notwithstanding that HPD's Mitchell-Lama regulations do not expressly impose these requirements, and petitioner also failed to obtain the requisite vote of the Board of Directors to terminate the Occupancy Agreement.

Burning It At Both Ends: A Scoping Review Of Trauma-Induced Substance Use Among American First Responders, Leah M. Rivera
Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) Theses
The purpose of this research was to ascertain the incidence, prevalence and severity of substance abuse among first responders as they relate to the general population, as well as determine existing variations that may be present between classifications of first responders (firefighters, emergency medical technicians and law enforcement officers). The present state of publicly available publications reporting on substance use by this population was assessed using key vocational terminology and found to be unsubstantial in journalistic quantity with diverse variations in statistical reporting according to differentiations of professional title, substance(s) of interest and geographic locale within the continental United States. …
Scale-Dependent Particle Transport Over Urban-Like Roughness In Turbulent Flow, Rae Riddle
Scale-Dependent Particle Transport Over Urban-Like Roughness In Turbulent Flow, Rae Riddle
Dissertations and Theses
This study employs direct numerical simulation (DNS) to investigate the dispersion of inertial particles in turbulent flow over three-dimensional urban-like roughness at Reτ = 200. Particles with Stokes numbers St = 5, 25, and 100 are tracked over cubic arrays with spanwise spacings Sy from 2h to 32h, where h = δ/8 and δ is the half-channel height, alongside a smooth-wall reference case. The results reveal scale-dependent particle responses characterized by three distinct regimes. First, high-inertia particles (St = 100) align strongly with mean secondary flows, exhibiting organized plumes above roughness elements. Their vertical transport peaks at intermediate spacing …

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Chronic aphasia following a left middle cerebral artery (L-MCA) stroke is often associated with limited recovery beyond the acute phase, necessitating interventions that target neuroplastic mechanisms. This study examined the effects of somatosensory pneumotactile stimulation paired with cognitive-linguistic tasks on functional language performance in an individual with chronic aphasia. Using a single-subject pre-post design, the participant completed a 10-week intervention protocol involving repeated pneumotactile stimulation via the GALILEO system combined with language and motor tasks. Outcomes were assessed using standardized measures, discourse-based language samples, oral reading, repetition, and phonemic verbal fluency. Discourse was analyzed using Correct Information Units (CIUs), words …
Empirical Benchmarks For Interpreting Effect Sizes In Violent Crime Interventions, Kohta James Matsukawa Hansen
Empirical Benchmarks For Interpreting Effect Sizes In Violent Crime Interventions, Kohta James Matsukawa Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
Criminal justice researchers apply Cohen’s (1988) benchmarks to classify effect sizes as small, medium, or large, despite these standards never being meant for broad, decontextualized use (Cohen, 1988; Gies et al., 2024; Goulet-Pelletier & Cousineau, 2018; Lakens, 2013; Milner et al., 2023). Repeatedly doing so may weaken statistical validity, distort findings, and impede effective policymaking. This study introduces the first effect size benchmarks specifically designed for violent crime interventions.
Using a quasi-meta-analysis framework, 1,605 effect sizes from 104 violent crime intervention studies from the CrimeSolutions clearinghouse were converted to Cohen’s d. Three new discrete benchmarking methods were created using a …

Unwanted Histories, Christen Hammock Jones, Karen M. Tani
Duke Law Journal
The Supreme Court’s turn to history as a method of constitutional decisionmaking has both intrigued and alarmed professional historians, for reasons now well-rehearsed in the literature. This Article takes as a given that history is now part of judges’ work. It then invites judges to think more expansively about the type of history they could—and perhaps should—be producing. This task, in turn, means engaging with some of the central questions about methodology and sources that preoccupy professional historians.
This Article focuses on a source base that historians routinely rely upon but that courts have shied away from: personal accounts of …

Technology-Based Challenges To The Law Applicable To Trade Interdiction During Armed Conflict At Sea: The Law Of Naval Warfare And Convoy Operations, Rob Mclaughlin
International Law Studies
The practice of convoy involves the concentration of a group of merchant vessels under the control and direction of warships and military aircraft for the purpose of protecting it from belligerent capture or attack. The practice has often been described as obsolete, but asserting the demise of the convoy has been as regular as it has been premature. It is fitting that this operational practice be subject to an updated legal treatment and identification of new legal challenges. This article seeks to reassess the law applicable to convoys based on the consequences of certain post-1945 technological developments. It notes that …

Sports Equality In The Ring: All Genders Can Catch These Hands, Gordon Chan
International Law Journal
This Article examines the intersection of sports governance, gender identity, and international human rights law, using boxing as a central case study to explore the inclusion of transgender and nonbinary athletes. Tracing the historical and cultural evolution of gender participation in sports from ancient civilizations to contemporary institutions, the Article highlights how colonial, patriarchal, and pseudoscientific ideologies have long shaped the regulatory frameworks of modern sports. The doctrine of lex sportiva, which governs international sports through autonomous legal norms, is analyzed for its exclusionary gender practices and resistance to external legal oversight. Focusing on the World Boxing Council (WBC), the …

Fairness To Informants And Cooperators Vs. Public Interest Protection -- A Comparative Analysis Of Legal Frameworks In The United States And Brazil, Luis Henrique Machado
International Law Journal
This Article offers a comparative analysis of the legal frameworks governing cooperation agreements in the United States and Brazil, focusing on how each system balances the competing imperatives of public interest protection and fairness to informants and cooperators. While both jurisdictions rely on the use of cooperating defendants to prosecute unlawful activities such as cybercrime, political corruption, narcotics offenses, and transnational organized crime, their institutional approaches diverge sharply. The United States—operating within an adversarial, prosecutor-centered tradition—grants prosecutors broad discretion in negotiating and enforcing cooperation agreements, with minimal judicial oversight. This discretion reflects a utilitarian logic that prioritizes prosecutorial efficiency and …
