This essay argues that Trump’s triumph in the 2024 presidential contest represents the consolidation of an oligarchical authoritarian project, backed by a multi-class and (surprisingly, for some) multi-racial electorate. It brought intensified state and freelance attacks on immigrants, labor unions, women, LGBTQ+ people, journalists, civil servants, assorted “political enemies,” and other groups that the MAGA movement targets. It is institutionalizing authoritarian governance structures in ways that will be exceedingly difficult to undo. The paper first addresses the experience of growing up in the shadow of fascism. This autoethnographic study focuses on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among U.S. veterans and the policies and practices that impact life outcomes. The research answers the questions: (1) what insights emerge from the author’s embedded advocacy experience; (2) what systemic barriers impede veterans’ access to PTSD treatment; and (3) how does military culture shape help-seeking behavior. This research draws on the author’s multigenerational and institutional ties to military service—as descendant of a Korean-era veteran, Marine and Army servicemember, VA employee, and veteran advocate. Mary Astell is frequently interpreting through competing frameworks: as either a feminist advocate of women’s rational autonomy or a religious conservative committed to Anglican orthodoxy. This division reflects a broader tendency in Astell scholarship to separate her intellectual, moral, and theological commitments into distinct and often conflicting domains. This paper argues that such fragmentation is not grounded in Astell’s own philosophy but is instead the result of interpretive assumptions—particularly the view that intellectual autonomy and religious obedience are incompatible. Across alphabetic writing systems, orthographies provide only partial cues to prosody, making prosodic sensitivity an important component of skilled reading. In English, readers must infer lexical stress and rhythm from opaque spelling patterns while silently constructing an inner voice. Two independent replications of the same randomized active control experiment (N=528 undergraduates) evaluated an orthographic prosody training in which passages were annotated with stress and rhythm markers and practiced with feedback, after which cues were reduced to a single marker to evaluate transfer. Afro-diasporic kinship, artistic production, and spatial intervention within the Desert

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease closely associated with the accumulation of α-synuclein in neurons, and inhibition in the release of dopamine, a key neurotransmitter of the nervous system. Disruption in dopamine signaling can cause cognitive and motor dysfunctions, with tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity being the most observable effects. There is no permanent treatment for PD, constituting the need for further research to improve current pharmaceutical approaches and possibly develop a cure. Sepsis is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, driven by a dynamic immune continuum that progresses from early hyperinflammation to profound immunosuppression. This review examines the three overlapping phases of sepsis: the inflammation-mediated cytokine storm driven by dysregulated PRR activation, NF-κB signaling, and NETosis; apoptosis-driven lymphopenia involving caspase-mediated lymphocyte death, dendritic cell dysfunction, and metabolic exhaustion; and prolonged immunoparalysis culminating in persistent inflammation, immunosuppression, and catabolism syndrome (PICS). Key mechanisms linking these phases, including the co-existence of hyper- and hypo-inflammatory states, are synthesized alongside relevant clinical biomarkers such as IL-6, HLA-DR, and single-cell immune profiles. Ability emotional intelligence (EI) and trait EI have been previously associated with heart rate variability (HRV), suggesting adaptive autonomic regulation. Emotional reactivity (ER) has also been correlated with EI, possibly because individuals with higher EI are more sensitive to emotional information. The current study used a cross-sectional design (N = 71) to examine trait and ability EI, self-reported ER, and HRV. No relationship was found between trait and ability EI, suggesting distinct underlying constructs. EI was not associated with HRV. Traditional signature-based methods often fail to detect novel malicious code, leaving institutions vulnerable to unknown exploits. The problem addressed in this study was the limited mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies for daily retail transactions despite continued technological advancement and increasing institutional interest. The purpose of this qualitative study, grounded in Husserlian descriptive phenomenology, was to explore the perceptual and behavioral factors influencing this adoption gap. Participants were recruited using snowball sampling, resulting in eight participants divided into two cohorts: active cryptocurrency payment users (Cohort 1, n = 2) and cryptocurrency holders who did not use cryptocurrencies for payments (Cohort 2, n = 6). This research examines Protestant churches in Nazi Germany and their varied reactions to Hitler’s Third Reich, tracing the Nazi rise to power, the Kirchenkampf (Church Struggle), the Confessing Church’s resistance, and figures like Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Niemoller, and Karl Barth. Hitler campaigned on a platform purporting to support religious freedom, but the state-sponsored persecution of Christian churches later revealed such promises as a facade. The Kirchenkampf exemplifies the reactions of Protestant German churches to Hitler’s rule: The German Christian Movement (GCM) endorsed Hitler’s radical racial theories, while the Confessing Church confronted the unbiblical rhetoric used by the GCM.

This thesis critiques physician-assisted suicide (PAS) as a reflection of Western thought’s shift from a biblical sanctity-of-life ethic toward autonomy and relativism. Through analysis of biblical and historical foundations, major cases, and state PAS laws, it argues that legalization weakens the state’s interest in preserving life, normalizes suicide, and exposes vulnerable populations to coercion, inadequate safeguards, and legal expansion. The thesis concludes that PAS laws should be repealed and that palliative care, hospice, and mental health treatment provide more compassionate and ethically sound alternatives.

Global production has significantly increased, with Brazil, the United States, and Argentina being the leading producers. In the U.S., Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota rank as the top soybean-producing states. Nitrogen (N) is a predominant nutrient required for optimal soybean growth and productivity, particularly in high-yielding varieties. Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most widely used polymers due to its durability, low cost, and chemical stability; however, these same properties contribute to its persistence in the environment. It takes about 1000 years for PE to be degraded by microbes in nature. This study investigates a molecular design strategy to enhance the biodegradability of PE by introducing polar functional groups into its backbone through palladium-catalyzed copolymerization with a Vince lactam-derived comonomer. This study examined the predictors of pretrial detention, its effects on case outcomes, and the determinants of pretrial failure in the federal criminal justice system, with particular attention given to changes associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Using administrative data from a federal district court in Connecticut, the study leveraged the pandemic as a natural experiment to assess shifts in pretrial practices and their consequences. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the lived experiences of African American women who identified as transformational leaders and who successfully navigated adulthood after experiencing the foster care system. Post-traumatic growth (PTG) theory served as the theoretical framework for this study, which reflects a positive mental shift brought about by struggling with at least one extremely difficult life circumstance. This thesis examines how generative artificial intelligence constructs and performs gender roles through a rhetorical analysis of the fully AI-generated podcast Fairytale Forensics. Drawing on theories of constitutive rhetoric, stereotyping, and McLuhan’s approach to the medium, this thesis investigates how AI-generated hosts interpret classic fairy tales while simultaneously reproducing and negotiating gender norms through the lens of prosopopoeia, metonymy and synecdoche. These performances rely on normative gender stereotypes that align with broader societal expectations, thereby potentially reinforcing existing cultural assumptions about masculinity and femininity.
