Violence Against Muslims In India, Janai Wright Sep 2024

Violence Against Muslims In India, Janai Wright

Ballard Brief

Violence against Muslims in India is an issue rooted in historical tensions and political ideologies. This violence encompasses various forms, including communal riots, targeted attacks, and spontaneous assaults. Historical factors dating back to the Partition of British India in 1947 with unresolved territorial disputes, have contributed to ongoing hostilities. Hindu nationalism, propagated by groups like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has exacerbated religious divisions, with policies and rhetoric marginalizing Muslims and promoting a Hindu majoritarian agenda. The failure of law enforcement and justice systems to address violence against Muslims further creates social insecurity. Consequently, Muslims in India face economic and …

Home Ownership Inaccessibility For Upcoming Generations In The United States, Kendall A. Isom Sep 2024

Home Ownership Inaccessibility For Upcoming Generations In The United States, Kendall A. Isom

Ballard Brief

Affording adequate shelter is an important human need, but it is also a significant aspect of the American Dream to be able to own a home. Housing inaccessibility poses a significant challenge for younger generations in America, including Millennials and Generation Z, compared to their parent and grandparent generations such as Baby Boomers and Generation X. This challenge is primarily driven by contributing factors such as wage stagnation, an increased cost of living, and a housing shortage. These factors collectively contribute to consequences including younger individuals being unable to afford homes, exacerbating wealth inequality, and hindering one’s ability to retire …

Human rights and sexual violence are major issues in Indonesia, as the former violates victims' human rights and dignity. Situations are made worse by stigma and a lack of security. In addition to examining potential alternatives for creating a future free from sexual violence, this essay looks at Indonesia's link between sexual violence and human rights. The realization of victims' rights is hampered by stigma and a lack of access to rehabilitation services. Human Rights (HAM) are fundamental rights that all people naturally possess since they are gifts from God that are ingrained in all people and need to be …

The relative importance of genetic drift and local adaptation in facilitating speciation remains unclear. This is particularly true for seabirds, which can disperse over large geographic distances, providing opportunities for intermittent gene flow among distant colonies that span the temperature and salinity gradients of the oceans. Here, we delve into the genomic basis of adaptation and speciation of banded penguins, Galápagos (Spheniscus mendiculus), Humboldt (Spheniscus humboldti), Magellanic (Spheniscus magellanicus), and African penguins (Spheniscus demersus), by analyzing 114 genomes from the main 16 breeding colonies. We aim to identify the molecular mechanism and genomic adaptive traits that have facilitated their diversifications. …

'The President Requests The Pleasure': Irish State Dining, 1922-1940, Elaine Mahon

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter explores dining with Irish heads of state and heads of government based on a chronological scope from the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 to the 1937 Constitution of Ireland. It quickly becomes clear that between 1922 and 1932, the Irish government, led by William T. Cosgrave, undertook a broad range of hospitality, entertaining important persons from around the globe. Between 1932 and 1940, the Fianna Fáil government led by Éamon de Valera built on the foundations of state hospitality put in place by the Cosgrave administration but also implemented significant changes in official entertaining. The 1937 Constitution of Ireland …

Exploring The Multifunctional Landscapes Model In Areas Dominated By Non-Native Tree Plantations, Andrea Monica D. Ortiz, Eugenia M. Gayó, Noelia Carrasco Henríquez, Bárbara Jerez Henríquez, Aníbal Pauchard Sep 2024

Exploring The Multifunctional Landscapes Model In Areas Dominated By Non-Native Tree Plantations, Andrea Monica D. Ortiz, Eugenia M. Gayó, Noelia Carrasco Henríquez, Bárbara Jerez Henríquez, Aníbal Pauchard

SOSE Affiliate: Manila Observatory

Multifunctional landscapes offer an integrated approach to production, conservation, and human well-being. However, the challenges of implementing them in territories where plantations dominate are yet not well understood. This is the case in Chile, where plantations of non-native pines and eucalypts are extensively planted in its South-Central regions for timber and pulp. The resulting landscape homogenization, environmental degradation, and increased wildfire risk have caused and exacerbated conflicts, impacting biodiversity and the well-being of local communities and the Indigenous Mapuche Peoples. After the mega-wildfires in the region in 2023, science-policy discourse promoted the multifunctional landscapes model as a way to increase …

Disentangling The Eighth And Fourteenth Amendments: Pretrial Detainees And Due Process Rights After Kingsley V. Hendrickson, David Baloche Sep 2024

Disentangling The Eighth And Fourteenth Amendments: Pretrial Detainees And Due Process Rights After Kingsley V. Hendrickson, David Baloche

Hofstra Law Review

In Kingsley v. Hendrickson, the Supreme Court repudiated the lower courts’ decades-long practice of grafting the Eighth Amendment standard onto Fourteenth Amendment claims brought by pretrial detainees. Since Kingsley, lower courts have warred over whether the holding applies to non–excessive‑force claims like inadequate‑medical‑care, conditions‑of‑confinement, and failure‑to‑protect. Five circuits (the Second, Fourth, Sixth, Seventh, and Ninth) have held that Kingsley extends beyond excessive force‑claims. Four circuits (the Fifth, Eighth, Tenth, and Eleventh) have held that Kingsley does not extend beyond excessive‑force claims. The Supreme Court has repeatedly declined to grant certiorari to clarify the scope of Kingsley. While confusion about the …

Modern Characteristics Of Domestic Extremists: A Study Of Extremists In The United States, Sherry H. Siller Sep 2024

Modern Characteristics Of Domestic Extremists: A Study Of Extremists In The United States, Sherry H. Siller

Doctoral Works at the University of New Haven

The goal of this paper was to perform exploratory research on multiple aspects of individuals radicalized in the United States. Previous research on this topic had often analyzed individuals using all or most of the accumulated data on this group over the entire period of “modern-day terrorism,” while ignoring shifting changes in culture, norms, and economics in the United States. This study aims to close a part of that research gap by empirically analyzing a data sample of individuals radicalized in the United States who either were caught in the attempt or after the carrying out of a terrorist attack …

On Measuring Muslim Segregation In Urban India, Arpit Shah, Anish Sugathan, Naveen Bharathi, Andaleeb Rahman, Amit Garg, Deepak Malghan Sep 2024

On Measuring Muslim Segregation In Urban India, Arpit Shah, Anish Sugathan, Naveen Bharathi, Andaleeb Rahman, Amit Garg, Deepak Malghan

Working Papers

The spatial segregation of Muslims in urban India is central to their social, economic, and political marginalization. However, the quantitative characterization of Muslim segregation has suffered from the lack of readily available demographic data at high spatial and temporal resolutions. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of accurately quantifying Muslim segregation in urban India using the latest electoral rolls data from Bengaluru (a megapolis of over 13 million residents) and an improved open-source algorithm to identify Muslim names. Our approach provides significant improvements over past efforts in this regard. We introduce two new metrics (diversity and local divergence) to account for …

Policy Change In The Deep South: An Analysis Of Three States, Rebecca Short, Noe Alexander Aguado, Tim Collins Sep 2024

Policy Change In The Deep South: An Analysis Of Three States, Rebecca Short, Noe Alexander Aguado, Tim Collins

Politics, Justice, Law, and Philosophy

This chapter uses Kingdon’s (2003) multiple streams framework (MSF) to explain policy changes that brought home rule to South Carolina, a modern constitution to Georgia, and the Judicial Article in Alabama. Policy change in the Deep South is rare, but it can happen. Short et al. provide a comparative study between three states in the Deep South to illustrate how policy changes can occur in traditionalistic political cultures. In every case, unusual events came together just at the right time. In Alabama and Georgia, ambitious politicians pushed their pet policies to attain policy change. In South Carolina, a confluence of …

Twin Inadequacies In The Ftc’S Recent Biometrics Policy Statement, John Burroughs Sep 2024

Twin Inadequacies In The Ftc’S Recent Biometrics Policy Statement, John Burroughs

The University of Chicago Business Law Review

In the spring of 2023, the FTC released a policy statement addressing biometric information and technologies using or purporting to use such information. The policy statement contains a remarkably broad definition of “biometric information” and describes a variety of business practices that could violate § 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act by being either “deceptive” or “unfair.” In spite of the policy statement’s comprehensiveness, however, it has two substantial inadequacies. First, the policy statement’s definition of “biometric information” is overly broad and will introduce unnecessary legal uncertainty for businesses by encompassing items not commonly thought of as “biometric information …
