Vascular remodeling to match arterial diameter to tissue requirements commonly fails in ischemic disease. Endothelial cells sense fluid shear stress (FSS) from blood flow to maintain FSS within a narrow range in healthy vessels. Thus, high FSS induces vessel outward remodeling, but mechanisms are poorly understood. We previously reported that Smad1/5 is maximally activated at physiological FSS. Smad1/5 limits Akt activation, suggesting that inhibiting Smad1/5 may facilitate outward remodeling. Here we report that high FSS suppresses Smad1/5 by elevating KLF2, which induces the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) pathway inhibitor, BMP-binding endothelial regulator (BMPER), thereby de-inhibiting Akt. Normally, von Willebrand factor (VWF) remains inactive unless its A1A2 domains undergo a shear stress-triggered conformational change. We demonstrated the capacity of a recombinant A2 domain of VWF to bind and to affect fibrin formation, altering the fibrin clot structure. The data indicated that VWF contains an additional binding site for fibrin in the A2 domain that plays a role in the incorporation of VWF to the polymerizing fibrin. Lafora disease (LD) is a syndrome of progressive myoclonic epilepsy and cumulative neurocognitive deterioration caused by recessively inherited genetic lesions of EPM2A (laforin) or NHLRC1 (malin). Neuropsychiatric symptomatology in LD is thought to be directly downstream of neuronal and astrocytic polyglucosan aggregates, termed Lafora bodies (LBs), which faithfully accumulate in an age-dependent manner in all mouse models of LD. In this study, we applied home-cage monitoring to examine the extent of neurobehavioral deterioration in a model of malin-deficient LD as a means to identify robust preclinical endpoints that may guide the selection of novel genetic treatments. Background and objectives Dual-trained medicine-pediatrics physicians (med-peds) play an important role in the healthcare ecosystem. Little is known about the subspecialty choices of med-peds residency graduates. This study aims to characterize the subspecialty choices of med-peds residency graduates. Methods The Medicine-Pediatrics Program Directors Association (MPPDA) administers an annual survey to the program directors of all med-peds residency programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This project represents aggregate survey data from 2020-2023. Results The number of program directors responding to the survey ranged from 80.8% (63/78) to 85.7% (66/77; mean response rate: 82.8%). In May of 2023, Tribunals in England and Wales had a backlog of nearly 144,000 cases. In a press release issued on July 25, 2023, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) unveiled a significant policy change to combat this backlog. Under its new directive, individuals or entities wishing to pursue debt recovery claims of £10,000 or less are required to engage in mediation proceedings prior to their case’s adjudication in the small claims courts of England and Wales. This transformative shift signifies a departure from the traditional adversarial litigation model of both of these countries’ judicial systems.

T-bet, encoded by TBX21, is extensively expressed across various immune cell types, and orchestrates critical functions in their development, survival, and physiological activities. However, the role of T-bet in non-immune compartments, notably the epithelial cells, remains obscure. Herein, a Tet-O-T-bet transgenic mouse strain is generated for doxycycline-inducible T-bet expression in adult animals. Unexpectedly, ubiquitous T-bet overexpression causes acute diarrhea, intestinal damage, and rapid mortality. The Society of Sigma Gamma Epsilon (SGE), the national honorary society for the Earth sciences, held its 46th biennial convention (September 16-18, 2022) at satellite facilities of University of Tennessee at Martin (UT Martin) located in Selmer, Tennessee. The convention was hosted by SGE’s Eta Alpha Chapter and the Department of Agriculture, Geoscience, and Natural Resources at UT Martin. Ten (10) of SGE’s approximately 60 active chapters sent delegates to the convention. Emerging research suggests that psychological inflexibility may be a factor contributing to the development and maintenance of insomnia. However, less is known about the potential cognitive pathways that may explain this relationship. In this study, we investigated the serial mediating effects of psychological inflexibility and daytime insomnia related rumination on the association between dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep (DBAS) and insomnia symptoms. The sample included 490 college students who underwent assessments at two time points over a one-month period. Spatial division multiplexing (SDM) is a technique used in telecommunications and networking to increase data transmission capacity over optical fiber communication channels. This multiplexing technique spatially reuses optical frequencies by allocating different spatial locations for inputs based on their inject angles. The signals travel in a helical pattern within the carrier fiber and exit as concentric rings. SDM enables more efficient utilization of available bandwidth and improved communication performance. This dissertation expands on current knowledge of how Black women of the early nineteenth century not only participated in political and social movements within the United States but were instrumental in effecting fundamental social and economic progress both domestically and abroad. They did this while grappling with what their US citizenship meant to them within a gendered and race-based hierarchy. In the process, they had their own labor to sustain their livelihood and apprenticed the future labor of others. This essay examines the judicial aftermath of Food Marketing Institute v. Argus Leader Media, a controversial 2019 Supreme Court decision that broadened the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) exemption for trade secrets and confidential commercial information (“Exemption 4”). This decision has made it easier for firms to hide damaging information from public view, frustrating the efforts of journalists and government watchdog groups that make FOIA requests to expose environmental harms, health risks, and failures of agency oversight. BACKGROUND: Reusable elastomeric half-mask respirators (EHMR) are an alternative to address shortages of disposable respirators. While respirator discomfort has been noted as a barrier to adherence to wearing an N95 filtering facepiece respirator (FFR) among health care personnel (HCP), few have examined EHMR comfort while providing patient care, which was the purpose of this study.

The 2023 edition of the Arkansas Corn and Grain Sorghum Research Studies Series includes research results on topics pertaining to corn and grain sorghum production, including weed, disease, and insect management; economics; irrigation; agronomics; soil fertility; mycotoxins; cover crop management; and research verification program results. Our objective is to capture and broadly distribute the results of research projects funded by the Arkansas Corn and Grain Sorghum Board. The intended audience includes producers and their advisors, current investigators, and future researchers. The Series serves as a citable archive of research results.
