Staphylococcus aureus deploys an arsenal of virulence effectors to remodel the host environment during infection, while simultaneously the host mounts an immune response to contain and eliminate this bacterium. This dynamic interplay defines the host-pathogen interface and shapes infection outcome. In this context, the secreted proteases represent a major arm of S. aureus pathogenesis, promoting bacterial persistence in the host by dismantling immune defenses, cleaving host signaling molecules and reshaping the host proteome. However, traditional substrate-by-substrate characterization cannot reveal the full scope of proteolytic activity occurring during infection. Background: Treponema pallidum, the agent causing syphilis, is transmitted through contact with infectious lesions, bodily fluids, blood transfusions, or perinatally. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection can mask the clinical manifestations of syphilis, while syphilis may exacerbate HIV progression. This study aimed to analyze risk factors associated with HIV co-infection among patients with syphilis.

This thesis presents the first systematic application of SAM 3, a unified foundation model for promptable segmentation, to mouse small intestinal organoid brightfield microscopy image analysis. The work spans the complete pipeline from zero-shot baseline evaluation through domain-specific fine-tuning on a GPU cluster, and documents the full engineering process required to adapt a state-of-the-art foundation model to a novel biomedical imaging domain. A comprehensive literature review of over 20 papers spanning detection-based, classical segmentation, foundation model, and morphological analysis approaches identified a clear research gap that this thesis addresses. Vestibular dysfunction is a prevalent and persistent consequence of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Clinical reports reveal that women experience vestibular deficits more frequently than men following mTBI. Despite the high prevalence and debilitating nature of vestibular symptoms, preclinical literature evaluating mTBI-associated vestibular impairments is limited. Emerging evidence demonstrates that cellular senescence is involved in the pathological molecular sequela of mTBI. Within an experimental rectangular dual-stream supersonic nozzle, a vortex-shedding instability forms at the blunt trailing edge of the splitter plate separating the Mach = 1.23 core flow and Mach = 1.0 bypass flow, with the combined jet further expanded to Mach = 1.6. This instability generates large coherent vortical structures that interact with the downstream recompression shock, inducing oscillations and producing high-frequency acoustic radiation that dominates both the near- and far-field. This qualitative descriptive study examines the absence of military career pathways for licensed mental health counselors (MHCs) and the impact of this structural limitation on service members' career transitions. Findings indicate that both combat and non-combat veterans pursued mental health counseling due to personal service-related mental health experiences and dissatisfaction with available care while in service. Despite these challenges, many participants expressed a strong desire to continue serving their country as professional counselors. Over half of the participants reported separating from the military because no occupational role existed for licensed MHCs. At the same time, most indicated they would have …

This dissertation examines how heritage governance in Belize shapes the representation, recognition, and participation of Afro-descendant communities within national cultural institutions and policy frameworks. Focusing on Creole/Kriol and Garifuna communities, the study analyses how law, institutional designs, museum practises, tourism development, and community-based heritage work to produce uneven forms of cultural visibility. I argue that Afro-descendant communities are not absent from Belizean heritage. Rather, their cultural presence has not consistently translated into institutional authority, sustained investments, or meaningful participation in decisions about national representation. Energy transitions are often celebrated as pathways to a greener future. Yet, they frequently reproduce spatially uneven burdens and patterns of dispossession, particularly affecting marginalised communities from the Global South. While climate justice debates have advanced, their spatial dimension has received comparatively less systematic attention. This paper documents an experimental use of spatial capital as a lens to analyse how green transitions reshape territorial agency and reinforce spatial inequalities. The three case studies across the electric vehicle chain show how spatial capital illustrates the sustainability agenda’s capacity to reshape people’s ability to access, inhabit, and act within their territories.

This practice-led research proposes recurrence as a systematic photographic method, where Derrida's concept of iterability is achieved through controlled visual iteration. Through recurrence, identical objects undergo transformation across iterations because variations in light, motion and environmental conditions produce perceptual instability rather than visual sameness. This process produces uncanny effects identifiable through perceptual ambiguity (Jentsch), environmental transformation and reappearance of overlooked materials (Schelling). The administrative silence is constructed as a legal fiction that originated as a negative (silence as refusal) and has since developed into a positive (silence as acceptance). In European administrative law, no system operates exclusively based on one legal fiction. Both negative and positive fictions are employed with defined limitations, as in France. With increased availability of credible and non-credible health information, particularly online, it is important to understand how the public perceives the credibility of various information sources for physical and mental health information.
