The landlord brought a motion for a preliminary injunction against the tenant and her co-occupant due to persistent nuisance behavior caused by their three pit bulls. The dogs had exhibited repeated aggression toward tenants, children, staff, and other pets, accompanied by threatening and abusive conduct from the owners. Despite a Notice to Cure and ongoing summary holdover proceedings, the tenant failed to act. The court found the landlord established a likelihood of success, irreparable harm, and a balance of equities in its favor. The dogs' behavior, coupled with the tenant's inaction, created a dangerous, intolerable environment. The court granted injunctive …

Understanding the effect of gut microbiota function on immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) responses is urgently needed. Here, we integrated 821 fecal metagenomes from 12 datasets to identify differentially abundant genes and construct random forest models to predict ICI response. Gene markers demonstrated excellent predictive performance, with an average area under the curve (AUC) of 0.810. Pathway analyses revealed that quorum sensing (QS), ABC transporters, flagellar assembly, and amino acid biosynthesis pathways were enriched between responders (R) and non-responders (NRs) across 12 datasets. Furthermore,

Restoring Exotic Cool-Season Grass Dominated Landscapes With Clethodim And Glyphosate, Eleanor J. Muzzy, Joshua D. Wiese, Abraham J. Kanz

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

A major threat to grasslands around the world is the spread of exotic cool-season grasses (ECSG). ECSG dominate vegetative communities and degrade critical habitats. One of the most common methods to treat ECSG is herbicide. To compare how the widely-used, non-specific herbicide glyphosate compared to the grass-specific herbicide clethodim, we conducted a fall spray in November 2023 at two different sites located in the Central Platte River Valley of Nebraska. The following June, we used a modified Daubenmire frame sampling method to gather data on relative cover, species richness, and community composition. After analysis, glyphosate appeared to be more effective …

Encanto’S ‘Colombian’ Soundtrack: A Diffuse Charm Unveiled Through Analysis, Manuela Wanumen Jiménez

Student Publications and Presentations

In the imagination of non-Latin, or even Latin foreigners, Colombia is mostly stereotyped as a country of drug trafficking, dealers, and violence. Although it is a social and politically transversal problem that has violently affected the country for decades, national and international TV shows such as Pablo Escobar: El Patrón del Mal (Colombia, 2012) or Narcos (United States, 2015– 2017) have posed narco-cultura as an ideal; they have glorified the power and enrichment of drug production, turning it into a desired lifestyle. However, in 2020, Disney announced that its next animated movie, Encanto, would be set in Colombia, thus presenting …

Impact Of Crowdstrike Outage On Delta Airlines, Mahiba Nasir

Student Publications and Presentations

CrowdStrike outage in July 2024 had negatively affected the operations of the airline industry; however, Delta Airlines' heavy reliance on third parties, which is also highlighted as a threat in their SWOT analysis, caused them to struggle to resume their operations (Delta Air Lines INC, 2023). To conduct my research on the financial fallout of Delta due to the outage, I looked at the existing financial reports of Q3 and compared it to Q2. I noticed they did not meet their expectations as their revenue declined by 2% from the previous quarter. The cause of this loss was proved by …

Targeted therapy has achieved significant success in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), particularly in patients harboring common oncogenic driver mutations such as EGFR, KRAS, and ALK rearrangement. However, ~35-50% of NSCLC patients without tyrosine kinase mutation or rearrangement (non-mutated) cannot benefit from these targeted treatments, highlighting the urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies for this patient population. In this study, we report a non-canonical role of human secretory ribonuclease 1 (RNase1), which binds to and activates wild-type ALK in lung cancer cells, thereby triggering its downstream signaling pathway. RNase1-driven ALK-activation (RDAA) cells exhibit enhanced cell proliferation, migration, …

Conservative politicians seek to limit what student are taught about the experiences of people of color who have been oppressed or subjected to racist policies and treatment throughout American history. Whitewashing history denies students the chance to examine history in its fullness as they are unable to analyze the voices and experiences of all people whose stories have contributed to the American story. In this article, the author explores how graphic novels may be used to teach African American history. Specifically, the author discusses how activities …

Leaders, Not Dictators: Why A Free Nation Starts With A Free People, Ahren Kirschbaum

Research Days

My poster explains the commonality between treacherous leaders of history, connecting it to the events in the White House today. The three leaders I analyzed, being Ronald Reagan, Napoleon and Stalin, all debased freedom of speech and media to further their goals. Reagan repealed the Fairness Doctrine, a bill that ensured unbiased news on radio and TV. The resulting news sources, such as FOX news, split the nation in half based on political ideology. In the bias and confusion, Reagan set up the government to favor the one percent through trickle down economics. In France, Napoleon entered power while the …

Political Philosophers Shaping Modern America, Sean O'Brien Apr 2025

Political Philosophers Shaping Modern America, Sean O'Brien

Research Days

The research finds that John Locke and his contractarianist philosophies have been more influential in shaping the 21st-century America of today. John Stuart Mill’s philosophies of liberalism have not come to fruition throughout history as much as Locke's. Mill believes at the time of his work, liberalism is a political ideology that happens to be more utilitarian. Over time, America has changed to believe in liberalism, which does not draw as much inspiration from his work. It is his utilitarian philosophy that would reject 21st-century America and the way that it has formed over time. He simply believes in fundamental …
