Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is a common congenital cardiovascular lesion that presents as a localized narrowing of the proximal descending aorta. While improvements in surgical and catheter-based techniques have increased short-term survival, there is a high long-term risk of hypertension and a reduced average lifespan despite correction. Computational models can be used to estimate aortic remodeling and peripheral vascular compensation, potentially serving as key tools in developing a mechanistic understanding of the interplay between pre-treatment dynamics, post-treatment recovery, and long-term hypertension risk. Osteoporosis and osteoarthritis are key diseases of musculoskeletal ageing and are increasing in prevalence and burden with the progressively ageing population worldwide. These conditions are thus particularly common in ‘the oldest old’, and there are complexities of managing them within the context of extensive multimorbidity, physical and mental disability, and polypharmacy, the rates for all of which are high in this population. Strength training machines incorporating advanced electro-mechanical technologies can produce hybrid resistances with variable inertia, such as a resistance that progressively changes from gravitational (inertial) to pneumatic (non-inertial) across the range of motion (ROM). To explore the biomechanical effects of these innovative resistances, a robotic chest press machine was programmed to offer three distinct inertial profiles: gravitational-type constant inertia throughout the ROM (IFULL); no inertia (IZERO); and linearly descending inertia across the ROM (IVAR). Economic coercion is recognized as a major policy challenge for global leaders. The case of Beijing’s use of economic coercion against Australia (2020–2024) in response to bilateral tensions holds important insights. Research shows that China’s coercion efforts failed in two ways: the total costs to Australia’s economy were smaller than expected, and Canberra did not change pre-existing policies that triggered the coercion. Failure in this case is attributed to the ability of markets to adjust. Building on this research, we argue that while markets adapted relatively well in the Australia-China case, coercion still produced significant and concentrated subnational costs that …

Research suggests that approximately 75% of the world's population suffers from suboptimal health status, meaning these individuals often feel unwell but have no clearly diagnosable conditions. Suboptimal health status, originating from traditional Chinese medicine, signifies an intermediate state between health and disease. Tourism has been deemed beneficial for personal health and general well-being. More recently, it has been proposed as a non-pharmacological intervention for individuals with dementia, given its potential contributions to health promotion and disease prevention/treatment. However, this change does not mean that it does not bring new problems to the local political landscape in Selayar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. We aim to uncover the emergence of oligarchy in place of identity politics as a new phenomenon in the Selayar context. As the number of transgender individuals continues to rise, there is an urgent need to understand the nature of gender and the evidence supporting gender-affirming care. This article proposes the hypothesis that one’s gender is a perception, influenced by biological and social factors. Early-onset gender incongruence seems to be influenced but not wholly determined by the prenatal hormonal environment, while late-onset gender incongruence is associated with comorbidities, suggesting that one’s sense of gender can be impacted by a variety of psychological and social conditions that affect the mind-body connection. This paper explores the inconsistencies in employment protections for medical cannabis users, with a focus on the divergent interpretations of protections based on “status” across different jurisdictions. The analysis begins with an overview of federal and state laws, followed by an examination of varying court approaches to the scope of protections afforded to medical cannabis users. Transgender people are facing waves of new legislation limiting their right to exist. However, there is an enormous amount of preexisting state laws which limit transgender people’s right to choose a gender affirming name on their own terms. Many current state laws severely restrict the ability of transgender people with prior felony convictions to change their name. The unsustainable harvest and consumption of wild animals destabilizes both wildlife populations and the human livelihoods that depend upon them. In coastal landscapes, the overexploitation of terrestrial resources can increase pressures on marine ecosystems, and vice versa. We explore populations' ability to mitigate hunting pressure by bolstering marine livelihood strategies, assessing whether Malagasy people (or aggregated households) (1) transfer harvest pressure and consumption from oceans to forests in times of lower fisheries yields and (2) habitually exploit both marine and terrestrial resources. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify genetic markers and immunologic characteristics of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) antibody-positive patients with stiff-person syndrome (SPS).

METHODS: We conducted systemic immunogenetic studies in 11 GAD-positive patients: 8 with sporadic SPS and 3 from a three-generation family with very high GAD-ab titers but diverse symptomatology (one with GAD-epilepsy and SPS and 2 only with diabetes), by performing complete immunologic profile and whole-exome sequencing analysis.

Drought is a period of abnormally dry weather that leads to hydrological imbalance. Drought assessments determine the characteristics, severity, and impacts of a drought. Climate change adds conceptual and quantitative challenges to traditional drought assessments. This paper highlights the challenges of assessing drought in a climate made non-stationary by human activities or natural variability. To address these challenges, we then identify 10 key research priorities for advancing drought science and improving assessments in a changing climate. Traditional approaches rely on user-item interaction data to map users and items into a shared latent space, but the sparsity of interactions often poses challenges. The empirical study of shareholder litigation in state courts is a seriously underexamined subject. To remedy this gap, we collected data on all 4,741 fiduciary duty complaints filed in the Delaware Court of Chancery over a sixteen-year period, from January 1, 2004, to December 31, 2019. After removing the duplicative cases consolidated into a lead complaint, the number of unique complaints was reduced to 2,958 in our dataset. On the political Right, the post-Reagan consensus favoring limited government has given way to a new generation of leaders—like Vice President J.D. Vance and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis—who openly advocate for using state power against their political opponents. Collectively they are the New Right: a populist, antiestablishment, conservative movement opposing pluralistic systems, institutions, and cultural elites. This paper critically re-examines Karl Rahner’s grundaxiom on the unity of the economic and immanent Trinity. It affirms Rahner’s effort to restore Trinitarian theology to the center of Christian life by grounding doctrine in salvation history. However, it questions the full identification of the two dimensions, engaging contemporary theological critiques to offer a more nuanced interpretation. The study ultimately argues for a balanced approach that preserves both divine self-revelation in history and the transcendent mystery of God.

This article examines the convergence between Hans Urs von Balthasar’s theological aesthetics and the Filipino concept of ganda, with a particular focus on two elements of the Black Nazarene devotion – the Poón and the Traslación – as illustrative examples of this convergence. Aware that the scope of his theological works remained primarily European, Balthasar expressed a desire for his theology to resonate with other cultures. In response, this article explores how his theology can be connected to the Filipino understanding of beauty through the concept of ganda.

This paper examines the evolving relationship between the Catholic Church and the Vietnamese government in light of recent developments, including the authorization of a resident papal representative and the invitation to Pope Francis. Using the see- judge-act framework, it analyzes historical tensions, growing mutual trust, and the Church’s social contributions, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. It argues that principles of justice, charity, and faith, alongside synodality, can foster deeper collaboration and harmonious engagement between Church and State in Vietnam.

This paper examines how contemporary films function as social constructs that shape identity and influence the negotiation of theological meaning among young viewers. Drawing on insights from John Pungente and Monty Williams, it explores how Ignatian spirituality and the Spiritual Exercises can guide theological engagement with film. Using theological hermeneutics and qualitative film analysis, the study investigates how young Christians, particularly Gen Z viewers, interpret cinematic narratives through a Christian lens. It argues that even non-religious films can mediate theological insights and become meaningful spaces for discovering God’s saving presence in contemporary culture.
