New York Oneida: Land Claims, Federal Policies, State Intervention, And Casino Development, Lee M. Hanover Jan 2015

New York Oneida: Land Claims, Federal Policies, State Intervention, And Casino Development, Lee M. Hanover

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

This paper examined the relationship between Oneida land sovereignty and their self-determination in establishing the Turning Stone Casino. The paper reviewed general trends in Oneida history with the state of New York, focusing on federal policies aimed at American Indian communities, and the legal cases that the Oneida have brought against New York and the federal government. The study extrapolated that historic cases involving political, legal, and land sovereignty issues prepared them for the fight over their casino’s admittance on Oneida land. The paper then addressed the reoccurring battles with the state of New York over the legality and jurisdiction …

Jihad In The Global Village: Al-Qaeda's Digital Radicalization And Recruitment Campaign, Katie Cannata Jan 2015

Jihad In The Global Village: Al-Qaeda's Digital Radicalization And Recruitment Campaign, Katie Cannata

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

Following America’s “War on Terror,” al-Qaeda and its affiliates became highly decentralized in terms of organizational and media operations. Though mass media outlets continue to play a significant role in drawing attention to al-Qaeda’s transnational campaign, Salafi Jihadists have recently begun to rely on new media for purposes of legitimization and promotion. The Internet serves as a suitable platform for these groups’ media objectives since it is inherently anonymous and absent of censorship. Most importantly, the Internet facilitates al-Qaeda in reaching a global audience, which is made evident by the growing amount of Salafi Jihadist media that is translated or …

Ebola Viral Disease: What Should Be Done To Combat The Epidemic In 2014?, Ali̇ye Baştuğ, Hürrem Bodur Jan 2015

Ebola Viral Disease: What Should Be Done To Combat The Epidemic In 2014?, Ali̇ye Baştuğ, Hürrem Bodur

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Ebola virus disease (EVD) was defined first in 1976. Since then, more than 24 epidemics have been reported from Africa, predominantly with the Zaire species. On 21 March 2014, the current West Africa outbreak was reported by the World Health Organization, the largest one ever recorded. The Congo epidemic was reported in July 2014. It was considered that the two epidemics had unrelated origins with 96.8% identical genomic sequence of the virus. EVD outbreaks occurred in areas with limited resources but it has a potentially global effect due to the possibility of imported infection and the potential misuse of the …

Invasive Species Sustain Double-Crested Cormorants In Southern Lake Michigan, Patrick T. Madura Jan 2015

Invasive Species Sustain Double-Crested Cormorants In Southern Lake Michigan, Patrick T. Madura

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus ) have long and often been implicated in having detrimental effects on fisheries. Resulting persecution, as well as DDT water contamination, led to a major decline of the species throughout its range. Research shows that the main components of cormorant diets vary significantly among forage, invasive, or economically important fish species. A recent, rapid increase in cormorant abundance in the Great Lakes has led, in some instances, to calls for the management of cormorant populations. Thus the objective of this study was to determine the prey composition of the double-crested cormorant colony in East Chicago, Indiana. …

Articles

Fungal spores as a prominent type of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAP) have been incorporated into the COSMO-ART (Consortium for Small-scale Modelling- Aerosols and Reactive Trace gases) regional atmospheric model. Two literature-based emission rates for fungal spores derived from fungal spore colony counts and chemical tracer measurements were used as a parameterization baseline for this study. A third, new emission parameterization for fluorescent biological aerosol particles (FBAP) was adapted to field measurements from four locations across Europe. FBAP concentrations can be regarded as a lower estimate of total PBAP concentrations. Size distributions of FBAP often show a distinct mode at …

The Use Of Social Media By Student Activists In Immigration Reform, Adrian Reyes Jan 2015

The Use Of Social Media By Student Activists In Immigration Reform, Adrian Reyes

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examined the use of social media by student activists wanting to enact change in our society and specifically around the topic of immigration reform. Coordinated Management of Meaning Theory (CMM) was utilized to interpret the results of online interactions with those that are considered activists in the immigration reform movement. Research has shown that collectively we create our reality based on events and objects of our social world (Pearce & Cronen, 2006). Further, we also can see that humans create reality through interaction (Allen, 2005). The research conducted consisted of seven one-on-one interviews with current under-grad and graduate …

Antipodean Owenite Or Colonial Socialist: Charles Harper, Economic Development, And Agricultural Co-Operation In Western Australia, 1890 To 1910, David J. Gilchrist Jan 2015

Antipodean Owenite Or Colonial Socialist: Charles Harper, Economic Development, And Agricultural Co-Operation In Western Australia, 1890 To 1910, David J. Gilchrist

Theses

Charles Harper (1842-1912) was a Western Australian pastoralist, newspaper proprietor and influential politician. The central hypothesis advanced in this thesis is that Harper was instrumental in establishing co-operatives in Western Australia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a pragmatic means by which to overcome the economic constraints that normally confront a settler population in a frontier economy. Specifically, Harper believed that co-operatives were an important means by which to build the type of private and public physical capital that was needed to settle colonists on the large, low-yielding Western Australian landmass, and, further, to provide the required …

Given the ambident reactivity of oxindoles in terms of N- versus C-alkylation, realization of the three points of diversity available to (presumably benzenoid substituted) benzylidene oxindoles is normally achieved via a sequence involving initial N-alkylation of the corresponding isatin precursor, reductive deoxygenation to the N-alkylated oxindole, and finally aldol condensation to the desired target. Since benzenoid substituted isatins are generally more readily available than the corresponding oxindoles, an alternate but much less examined manifold involves reduction of the isatin to an oxindole, aldolization at the C-3 position followed by N-alkylation of the resultant benzylidene oxindole. Since benzylidene oxindoles have potential …

Extended Warranties, The Great Lie: Why The King Has No Clothes, David E. Missirian

Transactions: The Tennessee Journal of Business Law

This paper examines how states have effectively eviscerated consumer protections in consumer product purchases all while under the guise of allegedly adding more consumer protection. The state and federal governments have sacrificed the consumer in the name of economic profit and economic revival by selling the consumer into economic slavery. Businesses are allowed to prod and encourage the consumer to purchase a diverse range of products through a barrage of advertising. Consumers are told that they can gain an added peace of mind, comfort, and security in the use of these products by purchasing extended warranties and service plans. What …

Backsliding: The United States Supreme Court, Shelby County V. Holder And The Dismantling Of The Voting Rights Act Of 1965, Bridgette Baldwin Jan 2015

Backsliding: The United States Supreme Court, Shelby County V. Holder And The Dismantling Of The Voting Rights Act Of 1965, Bridgette Baldwin

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court, having found that certain states received unequal treatment under the Voting Rights Act, struck down the Act’s preclearance provision in its Shelby v. Holder holding. The Author, in an effort to critique the conclusion reached by the Court, argues that these states, historically responsible for obstructing the ability of African-Americans to vote, continue to engage in practices that result in voting irregularities and acts of discrimination in the electoral process. Today, this strategic disenfranchisement rears its head in the form of legislation making voting difficult or impossible for many minority voters, a criminal justice system that targets …

Preferential Judicial Activism, Sudha Setty Jan 2015

Preferential Judicial Activism, Sudha Setty

Faculty Scholarship

The Author examines the Supreme Court’s use of “preferential judicial activism”—whereby justices decide whether to formalistically dismiss cases or instead choose to engage judicial activism based on their policy preferences—through contrasting the Court’s reasoning in Shelby v. Holder with its decisions in cases concerning national security. In Shelby, the majority characterized the Court’s review of the Voting Rights Act of 2006 as necessary given the fundamental rights at stake and the unusually broad reach of the Act in mandating federal jurisdiction over voting matters. However, in national security-related cases in which plaintiffs have alleged violations of fundamental rights, the …

A Better Death In Britain?, Barbara A. Noah Jan 2015

A Better Death In Britain?, Barbara A. Noah

Faculty Scholarship

In the United States, patients and physicians often avoid discussing the inevitability of death and planning for it. As a result, opportunities are missed to make choices that comport with patients’ values and preferences. In the absence of such decisions, the default model is to “err on the side of life,” which often results in overtreatment or inappropriate prolongation of life and avoidable suffering. This Article discusses the United States' end-of-life training and care and Britain’s Liverpool Care Pathway as related to end-of-life care availability, quality, and cost. It further sets forth the argument that while the United States' medical …

Using this particular DBR methodology, a local instruction theory was developed that includes a set of exemplar curriculum activities and design guidelines for the development of context-aware ubiquitous …

A Grounded Theory Model For Faculty Evaluation Of Nursing Student Performance During A Simulation, Penni Isla Watts Jan 2015

A Grounded Theory Model For Faculty Evaluation Of Nursing Student Performance During A Simulation, Penni Isla Watts

All ETDs from UAB

This qualitative grounded theory study explored the process of faculty evaluation of student performance during simulation in the southern United States. In the last decade, simulation experiences have been found to be useful in nursing education as a teaching methodology and as a potential method for evaluation of student performance. While clinical experiences are limited, unpredictable, and difficult to truly evaluate, simulation experiences provide an opportunity for students to manage care through pre-planned patient scenarios without potential harm to real patients. This allows faculty to observe students making decisions and caring for simulated patients in a context designed to elicit …

The Unfolded Protein Response And Calcium Dysregulation In Autosomal Dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa Animal Models., Vishal Madhukar Shinde

All ETDs from UAB

The photoreceptor cell death in autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (ADRP) is associated with molecular changes that occur due to mutations in a specific gene. S334ter RHO and P23H RHO are two ADRP rat models expressing mutant rhodopsin. The unfolded protein response (UPR) is a cellular stress response involved in the pathophysiology of several retinal disorders including P23H RHO rats. Considering our previous findings, we started our investigation by examining the status of UPR in S334ter RHO rats. As UPR tightly regulates several signaling pathways, we further studied whether UPR activation in S334ter and P23H RHO retina is accompanied by the …

Gsk3 Regulation Of Suprachiasmatic Neuronal Excitability And Light Entrainment, Jodi Paul Jan 2015

Gsk3 Regulation Of Suprachiasmatic Neuronal Excitability And Light Entrainment, Jodi Paul

All ETDs from UAB

Circadian rhythms are approximately 24-hour cycles in behavioral and physiological processes, such as sleep/wake cycles and cognition. In mammals, these rhythms are endogenously generated and entrained to the external light cycle by the primary circadian pacemaker, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). A hallmark characteristic of SCN neurons is the daily rhythm in the spontaneous action potential frequency, with high activity during the day and low activity at night. These SCN firing rate patterns are critical for maintaining robust, consolidated behavioral rhythms, and persistent changes in SCN neuronal activity are involved light-induced behavioral shifts. Many of the ionic components underlying daily and …

The Role Of Job Embeddedness In The Relationship Between Bullying And Aggression., James P. Burton Jan 2015

The Role Of Job Embeddedness In The Relationship Between Bullying And Aggression., James P. Burton

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

In this paper, the role that job embeddedness plays in the relationship between workplace bullying and aggression both inside and outside the workplace is examined. In a sample of 165 working adults, individuals who report being the target of workplace bullying are more likely to act aggressively themselves, targeting their coworkers as well as their friends, family, and significant others. Furthermore, the relationship between workplace bullying and aggression is strengthened for individuals who are highly embedded in their job. These relationships are found even after controlling for two similar attachment constructs, namely job satisfaction and affective organizational commitment.
