Dialogue Across Differences Of Position, Perspective, And Identity: Reflective Practice In/On A Student-Faculty Pedagogical Partnership Program, Alison Cook-Sather

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

Background: Inspired by various conceptualizations of both cultural diversity and cross-role partnership, this discussion challenges the assumption that holds sway in many people’s minds: Differences primarily divide us. The context for this argument is a program that pairs undergraduate students and faculty members in semester-long partnerships to explore and revise pedagogical practices.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to explore how dialogue across differences supported by a student–faculty partnership program can inspire greater openness to and appreciation of differences. The focus is on fostering deeper connection and empathy across student and faculty positions, perspectives, and cultural identities.

Co-Infection By Chytrid Fungus And Ranaviruses In Wild And Harvested Frogs In The Tropical Andes, Robin Warne, Brandon Labumbard, Seth Lagrange, Vance T. Vredenburg, Alessandro Catenazzi Jan 2015

Co-Infection By Chytrid Fungus And Ranaviruses In Wild And Harvested Frogs In The Tropical Andes, Robin Warne, Brandon Labumbard, Seth Lagrange, Vance T. Vredenburg, Alessandro Catenazzi

Zoology Data Sets

We provide the first report of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and Ranavirus (Rv) co-infection in South America, and the first report of Rv infections in the amphibian biodiversity hotspot of the Peruvian Andes, where Bd is associated with extinctions. Using these data, we tested the hypothesis that Bd or Rv parasites facilitate co-infection, as assessed by parasite abundance or infection intensity within individual adult frogs. Co-infection occurred in 30% of stream-dwelling frogs; 65% were infected by Bd and 40% by Rv. Among terrestrial, direct-developing Pristimantis frogs 40% were infected by Bd, 35% by Rv, and 20% co-infected. In Telmatobius frogs harvested …

Ranging Behavior Of Marsh Rice Rats In A Southern Illinois Wetland Complex, Scott A. Cooney, Eric M. Schauber, Eric Hellgren Jan 2015

Ranging Behavior Of Marsh Rice Rats In A Southern Illinois Wetland Complex, Scott A. Cooney, Eric M. Schauber, Eric Hellgren

Publications

The marsh rice rat (Oryzomys palustris) inhabits wetlands that are often fragmented and isolated by upland cover types. Persistence of marsh rice rat populations and metapopulations likely depends on their ability to enter and traverse the upland matrix, yet basic information, such as home-range size and landcover use patterns, is lacking. Our goal was to quantify home-range size and habitat selection by marsh rice rats in southern Illinois. Between March and November 2011, we radiocollared 21 male rice rats (8 subadults and 13 adults) that were each located 7 to 24 times each via triangulation and homing. We estimated home-range …

The Impact Of Performance-Based Assessment On University Esl Learners' Motivation, Kadidja Koné

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This thesis examines the impact of performance-based assessment on university ESL learners' motivation. To reach this aim, data were collected from 21 international ESL students taking an intensive oracy course for non-native speakers. Online motivation questionnaires were used in order to find out how these learners responded emotionally and motivationally to performance-based assessment, specifically an oral presentation project both before and after the project. The results revealed that the students responded positively to this type of project. However, their motivational and emotional states varied across time depending on their experience with the oral presentation, their performance, and the cohesion of …

Hook Up Culture: Changing The Structure Of Future Relationships?, Elise Woik

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Hook up culture is a relatively new phenomenon that is reported to be occurring rampantly on college campuses across the nation. Research tends to focus on the negative implications of hook up culture and the impact it has on college students' well-being. There is limited research exploring if hook up behavior in college is influencing relationship structure in later life, as would be demonstrated by individuals engaging in consensual non-monogamy practices. The present study examined college students' relationship practices to assess if their current relationship status and relationship practices in the past year align with their ideal, future relationship. Results …

To Dignity Through The Back Door: Tsilhqot’In And The Aboriginal Title Test, Andrée Boisselle

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

The decision of the Supreme Court in Tsilhqot’in clarified the content of the test for Aboriginal title. This article examines the reasoning of the Court to determine whether the judgment meaningfully contributes to re-equilibrating the conceptual framework of Canadian Aboriginal jurisprudence, still deeply skewed in favour of the Crown and of its asserted sovereignty. Beyond the case’s positive outcome for the Tsilhqot’in people, does the clarification of the test empower Indigenous peoples seeking the recognition of their title over their traditional territory? Regarding the role reserved by the Court to Indigenous legal traditions in its reasoning, the answer is no: …

The Unlikely Antidote: Political Tension And Political Health In The Modern Western Tradition And The United States Of America, Savannah Berger Jan 2015

The Unlikely Antidote: Political Tension And Political Health In The Modern Western Tradition And The United States Of America, Savannah Berger

Government and International Relations Honors Papers

At the most elementary level, this honors study is concerned with political tension and its ability to procure political health. The study begins with a discussion in political theory, examining the contemporary theory of agonism, which accepts conflict as an inevitable fact of pluralist political society and defends it as necessary for the maintenance of democracy. The study identifies agonism’s origins in the ancient Greek agon, but also emphasizes that the first formal exposition of agonal political ideas comes in Machiavelli’s Discourses on Livy. It continues to work in the realm of theory, charting moments of appreciation of agonal ideas, …

New Formalities For Casual Labor: Addressing Unintended Consequences Of China's Labor Contract Law, Daniel S.S. Cairns Jan 2015

New Formalities For Casual Labor: Addressing Unintended Consequences Of China's Labor Contract Law, Daniel S.S. Cairns

Washington International Law Journal

China’s Labor Contract Law (“LCL”) came into force on January 1, 2008. The first major piece of labor legislation since the 1994 Labor Law, the Labor Contract Law expanded legal protection for workers by mandating that labor contracts be in writing and delivered to all workers. Employers, predicting that the law would effectively raise the cost of employing full-time, long-term workers, sought methods of “creative compliance” with the law. One avenue for creative compliance emerged through the loophole in the LCL for so-called “dispatch workers.” Dispatch workers are formally employed by third-party dispatch service agencies and thus not covered by …

Preserving Photon Qubits In An Unknown Quantum State With Knill Dynamical Decoupling: Towards An All Optical Quantum Memory, Manish K. Gupta, Erik J. Navarro, Todd A. Moulder, Jason D. Mueller, Ashkan Balouchi, Katherine L. Brown, Hwang Lee, Jonathan P. Dowling

Faculty Publications

The implementation of polarization-based quantum communication is limited by signal loss and decoherence caused by the birefringence of a single-mode fiber. We investigate the Knill dynamical decoupling scheme, implemented using half-wave plates, to minimize decoherence and show that a fidelity greater than 99% can be achieved in absence of rotation error and fidelity greater than 96% can be achieved in presence of rotation error. Such a scheme can be used to preserve any quantum state with high fidelity and has potential application for constructing all optical quantum delay line, quantum memory, and quantum repeater.

Cellulose-Pectin Spatial Contacts Are Inherent To Never-Dried Arabidopsis Primary Cell Walls: Evidence From Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Tuo Wang, Yong Bum Park, Daniel J. Cosgrove, Mei Hong

Faculty Publications

© 2015 American Society of Plant Biologists. All rights reserved. The structural role of pectins in plant primary cell walls is not yet well understood because of the complex and disordered nature of the cell wall polymers. We recently introduced multidimensional solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to characterize the spatial proximities of wall polysaccharides. The data showed extensive cross peaks between pectins and cellulose in the primary wall of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), indicating subnanometer contacts between the two polysaccharides. This result was unexpected because stable pectin-cellulose interactions are not predicted by in vitro binding assays and prevailing cell wall models. …
