Can Translocated Native Fishes Retain Their Trophic Niche When Confronted With A Resident Invasive?, Jonathan J. Spurgeon, Craig P. Paukert, Brian D. Healyy, Cheryl A. Kelley, Daniel P. Whiting Jan 2015

Can Translocated Native Fishes Retain Their Trophic Niche When Confronted With A Resident Invasive?, Jonathan J. Spurgeon, Craig P. Paukert, Brian D. Healyy, Cheryl A. Kelley, Daniel P. Whiting

United States National Park Service: Publications

Diet interactions between native and non-native fishes may influence the establishment of native species within their historical range (i.e., reintroduction). Therefore, we illustrated the food web structure of and followed the transition of the federally endangered humpback chub Gila cypha into a novel food web following translocation and determined the potential for a non-native species, rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, to influence translocation success. Humpback chub and rainbow trout used resources high in the food web and assimilated similar proportions of native fishes, suggesting non-native rainbow trout may occupy an ecological role similar to humpback chub. Subsequently, humpback chub may …

Translocation Of Humpback Chub Into Tributary Streams Of The Colorado River: Implications For Conservation Of Large- River Fishes, Jonathan Spurgeon, Craig P. Paukert, Brian D. Healy, Melissa Trammell, Dave Speas, Emily Omana-Smith

United States National Park Service: Publications

The Humpback Chub Gila cypha, a large-bodied, endangered cyprinid endemic to the Colorado River basin, is in decline throughout most of its range due largely to anthropogenic factors. Translocation of Humpback Chub into tributaries of the Colorado River is one conservation activity that may contribute to the expansion of the species’ current range and eventually provide population redundancy. We evaluated growth, survival, and dispersal following translocation of approximately 900 Humpback Chub over a period of 3 years (2009, 2010, and 2011) into Shinumo Creek, a tributary stream of the Colorado River within Grand Canyon National Park. Growth and condition …

The Complexity Of International Criminal Trials Is Necessary, 48 Geo. Wash. Int'l L. Rev. 151 (2015), Stuart Ford

UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship

There is a widespread belief among both academics and policymakers that international criminal trials are too complex. As a result, tribunals have come under enormous pressure to reduce the complexity of their trials. However, changes to trial procedure have not meaningfully affected trial complexity. This Article explains why these changes have failed and argues that the complexity of international criminal trials is necessary for them to achieve their purposes.

Using a multiple regression model of the factors driving trial complexity at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), this Article shows that the largest drivers of complexity are …

Association Of Maternal Demographics With Breastfeeding Of Low Birth Weight Infants In Ohio In 2012, Raymond I. Okeke Jr.

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Background: Breastfeeding (BF) is an important feeding practice for newborns, especially the low birth weight (LBW) infant population and during emergencies. Association of maternal demographics with BF in LBW infants in Ohio, especially during emergencies is not fully characterized. This study aims to fill that data gap.

Methods: The data for this study were the 2012 Ohio Vital Statistics Birth Data compiled by the Ohio Department of Health and obtained from Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County. It included all 11,805 LBW, 8.5% of the total births in Ohio in 2012. IBM SPSS version 22 was used for the …

Understanding Social Effects In Online Networks, Huda Alhazmi, Swapna S. Gokhale, Derek Doran Jan 2015

Understanding Social Effects In Online Networks, Huda Alhazmi, Swapna S. Gokhale, Derek Doran

Kno.e.sis Publications

Understanding the motives behind people’s interactions online can offer sound bases to predict how a social network may evolve and also support a host of applications. We hypothesize that three offline social factors, namely, stature, relationship strength, and egocentricity may also play an important role in driving users’ interactions online. Therefore, we study the influence of these three social factors in online interactions by analyzing the transitivity in triads or three-way relationships among users. Analyzing transitivity through the lens of triad census for four popular social networks, namely, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Slashdot, we find that: (i) users’ interactions are …

Growing Up With Chronic Kidney Disease: What Parents And Children Really Want To Know, Uptal D. Patel, Debbie S. Gipson, Abiodun Aderogba Omoloja, Caitlin Wise Carter

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Adolescents with chronic kidney disease have specific questions about how their disease will affect their quality of life, but they may not always bring this up with their nephrologist. This session is designed to provide pediatricians and pediatric nephrologists with practical information to provide to adolescents with chronic kidney disease and their families. All providers who care for adolescents with renal disease need to be equipped to educate this high risk population and help them navigate through this vulnerable period. This session is designed to explore issues related to athletic participation, academic performance, substance use and abuse and sexual and …

Training Conservation Practitioners To Be Better Decision Makers, Fred Johnson, Mitchell J. Eaton, James H. Williams, Gitte H. Jensen, Jesper Madsen Jan 2015

Training Conservation Practitioners To Be Better Decision Makers, Fred Johnson, Mitchell J. Eaton, James H. Williams, Gitte H. Jensen, Jesper Madsen

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Traditional conservation curricula and training typically emphasizes only one part of systematic decision making (i.e., the science), at the expense of preparing conservation practitioners with critical skills in values-setting, working with decision makers and stakeholders, and effective problem framing. In this article we describe how the application of decision science is relevant to conservation problems and suggest how current and future conservation practitioners can be trained to be better decision makers. Though decision-analytic approaches vary considerably, they all involve: (1) properly formulating the decision problem; (2) specifying feasible alternative actions; and (3) selecting criteria for evaluating potential outcomes. Two approaches …

The Indigenous In Peruvian National Identity, Danielle Bartels Jan 2015

The Indigenous In Peruvian National Identity, Danielle Bartels

Undergraduate Research Journal

Indigenous peoples populate countries across the globe. In every country, issues of the national identity of the indigenous are important. With the aid of case studies, we can better comprehend the depth of these problems. Focusing on the intellectual history in a case study of Peru, I aim to understand the antagonistic behaviors against indigenous cultures and how the nation state chose to handle their indigenous population over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Cyp2a6 Polymorphisms May Strengthen Individualized Treatment For Nicotine Dependence, Yawo M. Akrodou Jan 2015

Cyp2a6 Polymorphisms May Strengthen Individualized Treatment For Nicotine Dependence, Yawo M. Akrodou

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

Each CYP2A6 gene variant metabolizes nicotine differently depending on its enzymatic activities. The normal nicotine metabolizer CYP2A6*1A is associated with high scores of nicotine dependence (5-10) on the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) scale because it encodes for enzymes that catalyze nicotine 100%. Slow nicotine metabolizers (i.e., CYP2A6*1H, CYP2A6*4A, CYP2A6*9, and CYP2A6*12A) are associated with underrated nicotine metabolizing activity (50%-75%), linking them to low scores for nicotine dependence (0-4) on the FTND scale. In a clinical trial involving the use of bupropion, people who were carriers of slow nicotine metabolizers were found to have a tendency to maintain abstinence …
