Skepticism Beyond Knowledge: External World Moral Skepticism And The Crisis Of Political Rhetoric, Aanya Ghosh

Bates College Journal of Political Studies

This paper examines the application of external world moral skepticism to contemporary political discourse and decision-making processes. Drawing from epistemological traditions that question our ability to access moral truths about the external world, I argue that a pervasive form of moral skepticism has infiltrated modern political rhetoric, creating a crisis of justification for political action. Through discursive analysis of political communication across partisan divides, I demonstrate how skeptical attitudes toward external moral facts have transformed from philosophical positions to rhetorical strategies that undermine democratic deliberation. One Step Back, Two Steps Forward: How Ballistic Missile Defenses Put Us On The Path To War, Karan Kuppa-Apte

Bates College Journal of Political Studies

This article argues that the use of credible homeland ballistic missile defense (BMD) systems counterintuitively encourages offense dominance by undermining the deterrence by punishment behind mutually assured destruction (MAD). It contends that while BMD is a defensive technology, under conditions of MAD that defensive capability, if credible, is perceived by adversaries to signal an intention to circumvent deterrence. Fearing an attack with impunity, adversaries increase their supply of offensive weapons, pressuring defenders to improve their BMD capabilities, and an arms race thus emerges. Background/Objectives: Celecoxib, a COX-2 selective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is widely prescribed for pain management due to its efficacy and improved gastrointestinal safety profile compared to traditional NSAIDs. Understanding prescription trends and their comparison to other NSAIDs provides valuable insight into prescribing behaviors in clinical settings.

Methods: This retrospective study analyzed celecoxib prescriptions written by three pain management physicians in a single institution over a 16-month period from 1 January 2023 to 30 April 2024. A male of Hemiscorpius lipsae Kovařík & Lowe, 2022 from Djibouti is described for the first time. A new species Hemiscorpius huluul sp. n. from Somaliland is described, fully complemented with color photographs.

What kinds of background knowledge students posses has a significant impact on their ability to interact with text cognitively and viscerally. What happens when they don't have the necessary background knowledge? Students must learn to clarify to acquire new knowledge that becomes the background knowledge for future literacy endeavors.

The objective of marketing communication is to develop brand knowledge in consumers’ minds by informing and persuading consumers with the information that the brand needs to convey. However, existing studies on advertising effects have primarily focused on quantitative performance metrics. Although studies measuring consumers' cognitive responses have increased recently, it is still difficult to find research analyzing the effectiveness of advertising from a communication perspective. This study illuminates factors driving skincare brand choice by examining the role of product effectiveness in the social media marketing context. Using quantitative approach with Structural Equation Modeling on data from 217 Gen Z respondents, the research focuses on two key social media marketing stimuli: nano influencer marketing and short video content marketing. The findings reveal that product effectiveness significantly mediates the relationship between these marketing stimuli and consumer brand selection. While various marketing stimuli can attract consumer attention, the perceived effectiveness of the product is the primary driver of brand choice. This study examines the relationship between loneliness, online brand equity, and luxury purchase intentions among Asian MZ adults. While prior research attributed the surge in luxury purchases during COVID-19 to ``revenge spending'' aimed at alleviating negative emotions, this study suggests that individuals leverage loneliness, transforming it into a driving force for luxury consumption by addressing emotional needs rather than simply compensating for distress. By highlighting online brand equity as a moderating factor, the study demonstrates how luxury brands, traditionally reliant on offline experiences, can leverage digital channels to connect with Asian MZ consumers. A major threat to grasslands around the world is the spread of exotic cool-season grasses (ECSG). ECSG dominate vegetative communities and degrade critical habitats. One of the most common methods to treat ECSG is herbicide. To compare how the widely-used, non-specific herbicide glyphosate compared to the grass-specific herbicide clethodim, we conducted a fall spray in November 2023 at two different sites located in the Central Platte River Valley of Nebraska. The following June, we used a modified Daubenmire frame sampling method to gather data on relative cover, species richness, and community composition. This study explores the role of Facebook’s comment sections in the decline of civil discourse, examining how the platform’s design influences user behaviors and contributes to increased incivility. Through a qualitative content analysis of 3,030 comments from 12 national and regional news organizations’ posts on both Facebook and their website, the research identifies key structural elements such as engagement-drive algorithms and broader reaction options that amplify uncivil behavior. The study also introduces three prevalent persona types in online discourse—the passionate partisan, the agitator, and the cynical joker. This study analyzes the impact of the Indonesian State Revenue Authority (SRA) on tax ratio and/or tax administration performance. The upcoming establishment of SRA, which is projected to take the semi-autonomous form under the direct command of the President, is part of tax reform in Indonesia.
