Background/aim: HCC is a common and lethal malignancy and multi-kinase inhibitors (MKIs) are among the therapeutic options for unresectable cases. However, response rates to MKIs remained variable, necessitating the identification of predictive biomarkers. Plexin C1 (PLXNC1), a receptor involved in cell signaling, has emerged as a potential candidate to regulate tumor responses. This study aims to evaluate the impact of PLXNC1 expression on the sensitivity of HCC cells to MKI therapy.

Diapause is a state of developmental and metabolic dormancy that precedes exposure to environmental stresses. Yet, diapausing embryos are typically stress-tolerant. Evidence suggests that diapausing embryos “prepare” for stress as part of a gene expression program as they enter dormancy. Here, we investigate if diapause II embryos of the annual killifish Austrofundulus limnaeus, which can survive for hundreds of days of anoxia, can mount a transcriptomic response to anoxic insult. Starting at middle age, adults often suffer from visceral adiposity and associated adverse metabolic disorders. Lineage tracing in mice revealed that adipose progenitor cells (APCs) in visceral fat undergo extensive adipogenesis during middle age. Thus, despite the low turnover rate of adipocytes in young adults, adipogenesis is unlocked during middle age. Transplantations quantitatively showed that APCs in middle-aged mice exhibited high adipogenic capacity cell-autonomously. Single-cell RNA sequencing identified a distinct APC population, the committed preadipocyte, age-enriched (CP-A), emerging at this age. Tasks in augmented reality (AR), such as 3D interaction and instructional comprehension, are often designed for users with uniform sensory abilities. Such an approach, however, can overlook the more nuanced needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) users who might have reduced auditory perception. To better understand these challenges, our study utilized the single-player AR game Angry Birds AR as a probe to explore how 11 DHH participants and 15 hearing participants experienced AR interactions. Our findings highlight that DHH users prefer interaction based on context, effective haptic cues, audio cue substitutes, and clear instructional design. We, therefore, propose …

While various alternative operating regimes have been proposed, no preferred or consensus alternative has yet emerged. As a group of experienced Colorado River colleagues without affiliation to any Basin State, Tribe, or interested stakeholder, we submit that there are fundamental principles that should form the basis of the ultimate Record of Decision defining management of the Colorado River for the future. Composites are extensively utilized as raw materials in an industry. In this study, we synthesized polymer composites, cottonseed oil polyol-based composites, incorporating inorganic fillers. This synthesis process involves the epoxidation of cottonseed oil followed by ring opening. Various characteristics of the polyol, such as the presence and quantity of hydroxyl groups (-OH), iodine value, and viscosity, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was determined. The composite samples were prepared by mixing different fillers (SiO₂, TiO₂, and Al₂O₃). Patients with high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSC) are usually diagnosed with advanced-stage disease, and the tumors often have immunosuppressive characteristics. Together, these factors are important for disease progression, drug resistance, and mortality. In this study, we used a combination of single-cell sequencing and spatial transcriptomics to identify the molecular mechanisms that lead to immunosuppression in HGSC. Primary tumors consistently showed a more active immune microenvironment than did omental tumors. In addition, we found that untreated primary tumors were mostly populated by dysfunctional CD4 and CD8 T cells in later stages of differentiation; this, in turn, was correlated with expression changes …

The legal process of the criminal justice system may be rooted in facts, but how a jury interprets those facts is inherently subjective. Their perception is influenced by how the case is framed, who is speaking, and how compelling the story is, not just by the evidence alone. This paper explores how psychological factors impact the perception of evidence in court by comparing the People v. Simpson murder trial and the Depp v. Heard defamation lawsuit. Both trials involved large amounts of forensic or digital evidence, expert witness testimony, and media attention, but produced very different outcomes.
