Fugitive Slaves And Freedom: A Reexamination Of The Connection Between Fugitive Slaves And Abolition, Michael Bogart

This paper focuses on the connection between fugitive slaves and the abolition of chattel slavery in the United States. It analyzes the various ways in which fugitive slaves not only changed the tides of the American Civil War, but also how their actions and undying determination to become free contributed to the fight for abolition. The main sources of this piece are the firsthand accounts of fugitive slaves themselves, as well as other primary sources which demonstrate the impact these people had on both the war and abolition. This paper focuses on queer life in Berlin from the beginning of the Weimar period (1918-1933) to the end of the Nazi Period (1933-1945) and is divided into chronological sections: queer culture in Weimar Berlin: Late 1920s-1932, Hitler’s Seizing of Power: 1933-1936, The Rise of the Third Reich: 1936-1939, and War Period: 1939-1945. I analyze the media and cabaret, Magnus Hirschfeld, the threat of Mannerbund, Nazi policy against homosexuality, closure of night clubs and arrests. My main sources are primary sources including photographs, newspaper articles, film, memoirs, police records and registries, German law and translated speeches. I argue that queer …

Sociologist Randall Collins proposes that emotional energy is gained through “interaction rituals” in which two or more people have a shared focus. Drawing on Collins' theory of interaction rituals, this research uses sociological introspection to investigate how reading in solitude and journaling the experience influences emotional energy. The research findings supplement Collins’ theory by demonstrating that emotional energy can be gained in solitude through one’s internal dialogue. Exploring how solitary activities may lead to emotional energy is important because it demonstrates new ways individuals may gain emotional energy by themselves. This paper explores the ethical dilemma of whether it is more ethical to obey the law or to resist laws that are morally questionable. To examine this issue, I draw a parallel between two historical and contemporary examples: Nazi officers during World War II who implemented genocidal policies, and modern-day ICE officers involved in the detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants. By analyzing the motivations, mindsets, and personal responsibility of individuals who enforce state policies, this essay questions the moral agency of those who "just follow orders." The purpose of this study is to examine how political competition in state governments influences the independence of state supreme courts. This study adapts existing theories from comparative judicial research of democratic countries to the U.S. subnational context. Through a comparative study of 50 U.S. states, I test whether political dynamics in subnational entities align with existing transnational theories of political competition and judicial independence. Political competition in states is measured by the partisan composition of state legislatures, competitiveness of state elections, and partisan control of state branches of government. While the first half of the decade saw many displaced by the implementation of ethnic polices like Generalplan Ost (General Plan East) in Eastern Europe by Nazi Germany, displacement would continue into the late 1940s as postwar politics created new political and ideological borders. This project will focus on the experiences of ethnic Germans from Eastern Europe under Nazi occupation and in the aftermath of war. This project explores the concept of granting legal personhood to natural environments, with a focus on the Clark Fork River in Missoula, Montana. Granting legal personhood rights to the environment has been used around the world to recognize and protect rivers, mountains, and other environmental entities. However, the U.S. legal systems have been slow to adopt this approach. This research essay examines why the U.S. has been lagging, analyzes foreign legal frameworks that have granted personhood to environmental entities and examines if any could be adapted to grant rights and protections to the Clark Fork River.

Thirty years later, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) continues to confront the persistent challenges stemming from its post-conflict legacy following the 1992–1995 Bosnian war and genocide, particularly the systemic issues of corruption, weak governance, and deep ethnic divisions established by Western powers through the Dayton Peace Agreement. These factors not only hinder BiH's socio-economic development but also obstruct its aspirations for European Union (EU) integration and regional stability. Objective and Methods The production processes of adsorbed and free gases and the dynamic partitioning mechanism behind the production efficiency of both gas types are critical scientific issues to be addressed urgently in the exploration and production of deep coalbed methane (CBM). Based on the test and assay data of cores from exploration wells, this study systematically analyzed the theoretical production of deep CBM resources. Objective This study aims to reveal the evolutionary patterns of reservoir parameters during the CO₂-enhanced coalbed methane (CO₂-ECBM) recovery and the impact of initial reservoir pressure on CBM recovery by gas injection. Methods Based on the multi-field coupling-based physical simulation experiment system of gas injection into coal seams for production growth, this study conducted experiments of CH₄ displacement by CO₂ under a constant gas injection pressure of 2.0 MPa and initial reservoir pressures of 1.5 MPa, 1.0 MPa, and 0.5 MPa.
