Historical ties between France and the Maghreb continue to shape and inform the experiences of the Maghrebi population in contemporary French society. There is an extensive Maghrebi population in France as a result of France’s colonial history in the region and subsequent migration. The Maghrebi populations face structural and social barriers in French society, including employment and education disparities, spatial segregation, and social Otherization. Maghrebi communities are only one example of France’s structural discrimination against non-European populations. Reframing Fat: Identifying Compulsory Thinness And The Role Of Discourse And Media In Its Perpetuation, Anabella Vucci

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

Drawing on Judith Butler’s framework of compulsory heterosexuality, as well as Robert McRuer’s use of this framework in his own theory of compulsory able-bodiedness, this paper critiques the notion that thinness is merely a beauty standard. Rather, this paper argues that thinness is a marker of superiority that requires the subordination of fat individuals and is upheld by the historically informed, albeit fabricated, narrative that being thin is right. This paper asserts that thinness is compulsory—required from all bodies that are held to an unattainable standard of perfect thinness. Further, this paper examines the role that media play in the …

The territory around Igatu, as that of many villages in southeastern Chapada Diamantina (Bahia, Brazil), was deeply modified by diamond mine activity. Caves were special targets for miners, since they can act as diamond-bearing sediment traps, and the Canal da Fumaça Cave was one of the most important and rich of them. The question that arises is whether the formation is a natural cave or an artificial diamond mine. Heritage sites immerse visitors in places where the impacts of climate change are readily apparent. They are also powerful places to elevate untold stories of women and girls. Heritage site interpreters interact daily with audiences who bring diverse lived experiences, different levels of subject matter knowledge, and multiple perspectives on climate change and the role of women in history. Every visitor interaction has a set of meanings, values, and narratives that visitors knowingly or unknowingly espouse. Most organisms are ill-equipped to survive anoxia, but some organisms have developed molecular strategies to mitigate the cellular stressors associated with a lack of oxygen. While it is established that anoxic survival is contingent on metabolic suppression, it is unclear what mechanisms support this change in gene expression. Gene expression is regulated by a variety of mechanisms within the cell, including alteration of chromatin structure through histone modifications and protein modifications which contribute to the ever-changing proteomic landscape of the cell. Protein modifications such as ubiquitylation can lead to the degradation of proteins, while modifications to transcription factors can change …

Pine savannas of the southeastern United States evolved with frequent low-intensity wildfires. Today, land managers use prescribed fires to restore this ecological process while also controlling vegetative fuel accumulation. Given the ubiquitous application of this management tool, studies should consider impacts on target and nontarget taxa in these systems. During fires, animal populations persist in the landscape when individuals emigrate to unburned areas or seek refugia within the burn zone; otherwise, they experience local extirpation. In a nuisance holdover case, the court partially granted the tenant's motion to dismiss, specifically dismissing allegations that the tenant's behavior "annoyed" other tenants, as the lease required a notice to cure for such conduct, which the landlord failed to provide. However, the court allowed the remaining nuisance allegations to stand, finding no notice to cure was required for conduct impacting building staff or the landlord's guests. The court also permitted the landlord to amend the petition to correctly reflect the apartment's regulatory status as part of the NYC 15/15 Project Based Program, finding no prejudice to the tenant.

The Supernatural Shadow Of The Philosophic Fallacy: A Critical Examination Of John Dew-Ey’S Experience And Nature, Danica Jenck

In Experience and Nature, John Dewey asserts the existence of the philosophic fallacy. He describes the philosophic fallacy as understanding reality through abstractions rather than material causes that are situated in experience. However, Dewey’s writings on moral and religious development, particularly his criticisms of the supernatural, puts his philosophic fallacy into question. I argue that Dewey’s rejection of the supernatural is a mistake that limits his ability to clearly articulate his metaphysical project, demonstrating that Dewey’s rejection of supernatural experience commits the philosophic fallacy and is based in a Eurocentric tendency that can be escaped by challenging Eurocentric metaphysical …

The first several months of President Donald Trump’s second administration have been marred by the chaotic and often unlawful use, or threatened use, of wartime and terrorism-related authorities for what are essentially domestic immigration or criminal law enforcement purposes. This is not the first time a president has sought to push the boundaries of his wartime powers, or outright claimed those he did not have, but it may well be the most extreme. This study examined the impact of the racial composition of teachers on disciplinary practices within a school, specifically focusing on how the lack of demographic representation contributes to disciplinary disparities experienced by students from underrepresented groups. Employing a mixed methods approach, the research integrated qualitative data from focus group with quantitative analysis. This study explored faculty perceptions of distance education and the potential integration of immersive 360° video technology in higher education. To understand how faculty use online learning and a specific form of immersive learning, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) served as the theoretical foundation for this study. This dissertation examines the intersection of Italian neo-fascism, the Mediterranean migrant crisis, and digital media. Through a qualitative content analysis of the Twitter and Instagram posts made by Italy's center-right parliamentary coalition from 2014-2018, this research outlines frameworks that facilitate both the physical and social deaths of migrants. Twitter is a platform on which bite-sized xenophobic messages characterize migrants as criminals, spoiled youth, spreaders of infectious disease, and future terrorists--sometimes in a contradictory fashion. Instagram is a medium for conveying Italian identity and history, which disregards the longstanding contributions of people of color, including Muslims, in Southern Italy. Comment sections …

Introduction: The model of emotional intelligence as an ability has evolved since its introduction 35 years ago. The revised model includes that emotional intelligence (EI) is a broad intelligence within the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) model of intelligence, and that more areas of problem solving are involved than originally detailed. An argument is made here that veridical scoring of EI test responses is a sound procedure relative to scoring keys based on expert consensus or a single emotion theory. Existing research revealed that K-12, school-based social work clinicians were utilized in various ways to support students' social-emotional learning (SEL) needs in public K-12 schools in the United States. However, there was a gap in knowledge about the unique approaches K-12 school-based social work clinicians employed to address the SEL needs of non-at-risk students. The rapid evolution of computer science (CS) as an integral part of K-12 public education in the United States has highlighted significant equity and diversity issues. Guided by critical race theory and community cultural wealth, this basic qualitative study explored high school CS teachers’ perceptions of the challenges and opportunities related to recruiting, retaining, and ensuring the success of students of color. Thematic analysis of data collected using semistructured interviews with 12 high school CS teachers revealed key challenges, including curriculum rigidity, funding inequities, and lack of administrative support. Introduction: Ensuring that medical students are prepared for future practice is challenging for all medical schools. Most studies of preparedness involve newly qualified doctors and use quantitative methods such as self-report surveys focused on defined competencies, and often find graduates are unprepared for the complex and challenging areas of real-world practice. The court found that the landlord repeatedly obstructed tenant's attempt to use her Emergency Housing Voucher for "leasing in place" by refusing to submit necessary paperwork, citing arrears, and failing to provide a valid Tax ID. The injunction was granted to preserve tenant's voucher and residency, emphasizing the landlord's obligation under New York City and State Human Rights Laws to accept lawful sources of income.
