Histories of internment in Canada have paid much attention to internees’ experiences but far less to those of the guards. Correcting this trend, this article offers a detailed case study of one soldier, Watson Kirkconnell, who worked at the Fort Henry and Kapuskasing internment camps. Drawing on his valuable but heretofore unutilised archive of material, this article provides a vivid social history of the camps through Kirkconnell’s eyes. Planning is a ubiquitous dimension of service-learning and community engagement (SLCE) partnership practice. How SLCE administrators conceptualize, inhabit, and negotiate their roles as planners remains empirically under-investigated, however, as does when and why planners experience shifts in perspective that affect partnership quality and outcomes. We introduce the concept of planning orientations and report on a study in which SLCE administrators reflected on their desired and practiced planning orientations as they planned and implemented a partnership reflection process. Background/aim: Reports on the use of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors in the treatment of localized scleroderma are increasing in the literature. In this review, we examined the published studies regarding the use of JAK inhibitors in patients with localized scleroderma.

Materials and methods: We searched MEDLINE and Scopus for articles on patients with localized scleroderma treated with JAK inhibitors. The search included articles from the inception of these databases through August 1st, 2024.

Background/aim: Floods are the most frequent natural disasters and pose direct and indirect health risks, some well-documented and others poorly understood. Epidemiological studies help bridge these gaps and guide effective public health responses.In September 2023, Storm Daniel caused severe flooding in Libya, damaging infrastructure, including healthcare facilities. The disaster affected 250,000 people, displaced 48,000, and claimed 15,000 lives, making it the second deadliest natural disaster of the year. Anastomotic leaks after colorectal resection are serious surgical complications. We have compared the integrity of two common colorectal anastomosis techniques, end-to-side (ES) and end-to-end (EE), to control specimens using a novel experimental setup that mimics anastomotic air leak tests, which are typically performed during surgeries. Freshly harvested porcine colonic sections from 23 F1 cross-species pigs were used. Pressure measurements and video imaging were used to monitor the ex vivo experiments on EE, ES, and Control specimens. This study examines the effects on bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana) and ribbon kelp (Alaria marginata) of combinations of three climate-related stressors relevant to high-latitude kelp forests: temperature, salinity, and sediment load. Fertile specimens of both species were collected from Juneau, Alaska. Spores produced were cultivated over 40 days in four ecologically relevant stressor treatments: control (all stressor levels normal; CTRL), increased glacial melt (normal temperature, low salinity, high sediment load; GLAC), increased runoff (high temperature, low salinity, normal sediment load; MELT) and climate change (high temperature, low salinity, high sediment load; CLIM). Impaired postural control constitutes a major symptom after mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI/sport-related concussions (SRC)). In order to uphold cognition and behavior during pathological situations, individuals may be characterized by neuronal upregulation. Because postural control necessitates the integration of sensory information within somatosensory (/parietal) cortices, we investigated the hypothesis that athletes with ongoing symptoms after SRC are characterized by increased brain activation within these areas in order to compensate for postural deficits. Sixty-six athletes (27 ± 13 years; 50 men, 16 women) participated in the study. Background/aim: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a complex autoimmune disease characterized by vascular disorders and fibrosis. This study aimed to compare pulmonary artery wall thickness (PAWT) in SSc patients without PAH with idiopathic PAH (IPAH) and healthy controls and to investigate the effect of increased PAWT and inflammation on vascular changes in SSc patients.

Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 60 SSc patients, 30 IPAH patients, and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls, all of whom underwent echocardiographic evaluation. Data were analyzed including patient demographics, disease duration, type of skin involvement, lung involvement, and autoantibody status.

The study of choroidal endothelial cells is essential for understanding the pathological mechanisms underlying choroidal neovascularization and other vision-threatening disorders. Traditional methods for isolating and culturing primary endothelial cells often yield mixed populations or require specialized equipment, limiting their widespread use. Here, we present a straightforward protocol for isolating and culturing primary mouse choroidal endothelial cells. This protocol involves enzymatic digestion of choroidal tissue, magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS) to enrich CD31+ endothelial cells, and optimized culture conditions to promote cell proliferation and maintain endothelial phenotype. The omentum is a visceral adipose tissue that undergoes dynamic immunological changes prior to and following metastasis. Here, we present a protocol for assessing the mobilization of peritoneal B cells to the pre-metastatic omentum in a mouse ovarian cancer model. We describe steps for isolation and adoptive transfer of peritoneal donor B cells and their detection in the omentum of recipient mice. This protocol could be utilized to study the mobilization of peritoneal B cells to the omentum in other pathological contexts.
