This dissertation rhetorically analyzes appeals to material ethos in The Craftsman and Make: magazines in order to identify two historical considerations of craftwork and craftsperson identities. I argue that these case studies represent two approaches towards craft at historical moments when automation and industrialization were disrupting what it meant to be a craftsperson or maker. While ethos has traditionally been thought of as a rhetorical relationship among rhetors and audiences, within these magazines ethos is treated as a relationship between craftspeople and nonhuman materials. School absenteeism has been referred to as a hidden educational crisis by the United States Department of Education. National data show that chronic absenteeism has doubled since pre-pandemic rates, increasing from about 16% of school students to nearly 30% during the 2021-22 school year. To understand this widespread issue, I conducted a systematic review of the available literature on potential risk factors or correlates associated with school absenteeism. A total of 106 studies published between 2000 and 2023 were included in this review. This thesis examines the extent of judicial power exercised by the top constitutional courts in common law countries, using judicial review as a proxy for this power. I analyze three apex constitutional courts—the supreme courts of the United States, India, and Canada—as they all engage in strong-form judicial review and have been referred to at different times by various scholars as “the most powerful court in the world.” To frame my analysis, I explore how these courts have evolved in power throughout their histories. A Customizable Ligand-Conjugate System For Investigation And Detection Of Ghrelin O-Acyltransferase, Amber Ford

Ghrelin is a 28 amino acid peptide hormone responsible for a variety of physiological functions. Ghrelin signals these functions via its cognate receptor, GHSR, after an essential post translational modification which acylates its third serine. The acylation of ghrelin is facilitated by the enzyme ghrelin O-acyltransferase (GOAT) for which ghrelin is the only known substrate. Canonically, GOAT acylates ghrelin in the endoplasmic reticulum before it is further processed and secreted in circulation. Recent studies, however, have detected GOAT in the cytoplasm, plasma membrane, and in circulation in extracellular vesicles. Ethical inquiry in computing has an evolving nature, where repeated critical questioning may lead to a series of reframings of the problem. Since many computing students have experience with agile project-based courses, an iterative approach can provide a familiar entry into ethics. Agile development, however, is typically oriented around satisfaction of customer goals, while ethical inquiry requires constant questioning that may cast those goals into doubt. Research suggests that perimenopause can compound existing struggles for some Autistic people, with potentially catastrophic consequences. Barriers to self-expression due to communication differences are also well-documented. Acknowledging this, our neurodiverse research team invited creative submissions themed around Autistic experiences of menopause, receiving works from six Autistic participants including paintings, poetry, and graphic works. Engaging with the six creative submissions, Autistic Community Researchers on our team produced reflexive, polytextual response works. Creative exploration of Autistic menopause encouraged emotional catharsis, self-understanding, and activism/artivism. Autistic Community Researchers noted transcendent, almost “magical” dimensions of connecting with other Autistic people’s lived experiences. Our creative emancipatory …

Perceptions of life and death are deeply embedded in the artistic expressions of a society, shaped by its cultural, philosophical and social environment. This study explores how funerary paintings from the early Han dynasty - the Mawangdui T-shaped painting and the Jinqueshan Han tomb silk painting - reflect evolving views of life and the afterlife under changing social conditions. While both paintings derive from the funerary traditions of Chu culture and Daoist beliefs in immortality, their differences highlight a significant shift: the Mawangdui T-Shaped Painting emphasizes ascent to the heavenly world through nature worship and ancestral connections, while the Jinqueshan …

This thesis explores the evolution of African-led transnational reparations campaigns from the final decade of the twentieth century through the early decades of the twenty-first. It examines how reparative justice initiatives have emerged in response to the enduring legacies of slavery, colonialism, and systemic racial oppression, and how these campaigns reflect both historical memory and contemporary demands for justice by Africans and people of African descent worldwide. In the United States, land may be owned by governments, private landowners, corporations, tribes, etc. The rent relation involved in oil and gas extraction on private lands, however, remain largely unexplored in energy geography, and geography more broadly. In this dissertation, I explore the rent relation between the landowning class and oil capital in North Dakota. I argue rent is a class struggle where the interests of oil capital collide with the private landowning class over the capture of surplus-value. Curating Climate Change: Information Flows Across And Within Social Media Platforms, Yiran Duan

This dissertation explores how climate change information spreads on X (formerly Twitter) and what content from YouTube travels to X, focusing on climate change related tweets posted during November 2022. Using content analysis, machine learning, and case studies, about 114,000 tweets and their embedded YouTube videos were analyzed. The findings show that not all climate-related content is equally shared, some information is more likely to spread than others. The findings also indicate that users with a moderate number of followers are the ones connecting YouTube and X, rather than those with the highest follower counts on X. The findings are …

Recovering sparse signals from limited and noisy measurements is an important problem in modern data processing. Traditional methods, which often rely on convex relaxations such as the $\ell_1$ norm, struggle in scenarios with high coherence or large dynamic ranges. A major challenge in these settings is to develop a unified and computationally efficient framework that can accommodate a broad class of sparsity-promoting functions. Conservatism is both undertheorized and poorly understood in philosophical political theory; all extant theories have proven deficient. They either conflate what is contingently associated with conservatism with its essence, draw mistaken generalizations from apparently conservative behavior, or else are explanatorily incomplete.

To avoid these deficiencies, I develop a rigorous, theory-neutral groundwork for evaluating theories of conservatism. This groundwork utilizes both traditional methods of analytic philosophy and, for the first time in the field, historiometry. Philosophical analysis determines the formal requirements of a successful explanation while empirical, historiometric data determines the most salient conservative exemplars whom any such theory must explain. …

This was not the case with Colonel John Singleton Mosby, who quickly transformed into a figure whose legacy from the Civil war gave him a unique place in the American imagination as the legendary Gray Ghost of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Fatty acid amides are a large family of endogenous metabolites with significant biological activity, including that of the endocannabinoid system. Currently little is known about how this system of tightly regulated compounds works within humans. This work lays the foundation to explore the structure-activity relationship driving the selectivity of ligand-protein interactions involved with fatty acid amides. A library of activity-based proteomic profiling probes for fatty acid amides has been synthesized to this end. Additionally, progress towards phytocannabinoid probes has been made as well.

In this paper we examine the notion of ‘deliberate practice’, which has formed the basis of several teacher education programmes in England and the United States and promises to improve the quality of teaching via highly structured training programmes. We identify early criticisms of deliberate practice and unpack the assumptions embedded in its underpinning thinking. We demonstrate that deliberate practice is insufficient as a basis for teacher expertise as teaching is not a ‘performance profession’, the activities of teachers cannot all be easily or meaningfully decomposed, and the ‘goals’ of teaching are not solely geared towards maximising measurable student attainment. …

DNA methyltransferase 3A (DNMT3A) plays crucial roles in mammalian development and hematopoiesis. DNMT3A protein instability is associated with blood diseases such as myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), as well as Tatton-Brown-Rahman syndrome, an overgrowth disorder. We found that certain unstable DNMT3A mutations cause DNMT3A localization changes, resulting in loss of function. This mislocalization is partially rescued by E1 enzyme inhibition or stable USP11 expression, as DNMT3A stability is maintained by deubiquitinating enzyme USP11 countering degradation by CUL4-DCAF8 E3 ligase. We also found that USP11 enhances DNMT3A SUMOylation by promoting the interaction between DNMT3A and SUMO E3 ligases. DNMT3A …

Clinical studies of T cells engineered with chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) targeting CD19 in B-cell malignancies have demonstrated that relapse due to target antigen (CD19) loss or limited CAR T cell persistence is a common occurrence. The possibility of such events is greater in solid tumors, which typically display more heterogeneous antigen expression patterns and are known to directly suppress effector cell proliferation and persistence. T cell engineering strategies to overcome these barriers are being explored. Ferdinand E. Marcos's Martial Law regime tried to present itself as heralding the advancement of the country's education system. To bolster this claim, it decreed the professionalization of the teaching vocation, among other ostensibly progressive education policies. However, teaching lost its prestige as an occupation during Marcos's term. Why did this counterintuitive development happen? How did teachers respond to this situation?
