Forest and Society
Mangroves at the land-sea interface offer invaluable goods and services through their unique ecosystem. Society has responded by developing governance mechanisms to manage these resources sustainably, which is crucial for societal well-being. The global environmental governance landscape is a complex network of treaty-based regimes addressing various ecological challenges. This study aims to examine the treaty-based regimes governing mangrove conservation, systematically mapping and identifying authoritative global mangrove regimes. It analyses the fragmentation scale regarding synergies, conflicts, and neutral relationships between global environmental treaties. Online scoping reviews and content analysis revealed that the Ramsar Convention serves as the legal authority of the …

Rhythms For Living: Fluid Cultural Adaptations Within The Dynamic Watersheds Of Eastern Indonesia, Cynthia Twyford Fowler, Blajan Konradus, Sri Widinugraheni, Agustinus Gergorius Raja Dasion
Forest and Society
Tectonics literally and figuratively create rhythms for living in the seismically active nation of Indonesia where shifting plates generate landforms around which cultures construct their homelands. Eastern Indonesian communities who have built their societies around the region’s dynamic watersheds have constructed traditional ecological knowledge and place-based skills for accessing freshwater. What is the water-related knowledge and skills of Indigenous societies who live in the tropical monsoon climate zone of Nusa Tenggara Timur Province (NTT)? How have communities living on Sumba Island in southern NTT adapted to their homelands where they find water to pose the most difficult challenge to survival? …

Forest and Society
This research aims to reveal the position of indigenous women in Indonesia’s capital city in terms of gender equality, culture, and local language preservation. The research is done through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using a phenomenological approach. There are 19 participants selected from two indigenous ethnicities: Dayak, and Paser. The participants reveal that gender equality has long been applied in their community, which can be seen from the equality of education, jobs, domestic affairs, rituals, and representation in government or organization. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate the crucial role of women in preserving culture and language, as they serve as initiators, …

This study examines how the Dayak Tunjung community in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, employs linguistic classifications to structure and transmit ecological knowledge within a traditional swidden agricultural system. It focuses on the vocabulary used to denote fallow stages and analyzes how generational shifts in language use reflect broader socio-ecological transformations. Data were collected through 16 semi-structured interviews and participant observation in Linggang Melapeh Village, stratified by age and occupation to capture intergenerational dynamics. The findings reveal that older generations retain a detailed lexicon tied to ecological succession and customary land practices, while younger members increasingly adopt shortened fallow cycles and show …

Missing Information: A Content Analysis Of U.S. Missing Persons Alerts Using The Missing And Endangered Persons Message Framework, Lauren Cain, Jeannette Sutton, Hugh Walpole, Micki Olson
Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity Faculty Scholarship
Missing and endangered person (MEP) alerts are a prominent messaging strategy used by law enforcement agencies in the United States to recover missing persons, with over 1,800 AMBER Alerts issued via the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system and nearly 40 similar alerts introduced by state legislatures for other groups of missing people. Despite their prevalent use, the contents of MEP alerts have not yet been empirically examined. Drawing from warning message design and AMBER Alert best practices, we propose a new MEP Message Framework and use it to evaluate the contents of 4,053 MEP WEAs sent from 2013 to 2023. …
265 E. 66th Llc V. Silber
All Decisions
A landlord's motion to amend its non-payment petition was granted, and the tenant's motion to dismiss was denied. The court allowed the landlord to amend its pleading to remove claims for rent not included in the predicate rent demand. It also ruled that a minor misspelling of the landlord's name on the lease was a de minimus error that did not deprive the landlord of standing to bring the action.

All Decisions
Respondent-tenant Mia Valentine's motion to dismiss was granted and the Petition was dismissed as against "Jane Doe/Mia Valentine" for Petitioner's failure to name a necessary party in its pleadings. Specifically, Petitioner had extensive prior communication only with Ms. Valentine as the sole adult tenant of the apartment, as well as previously accepting ERAP payments made out in Ms. Valentine's name and still failing to name her as a party in the case. While Ms. Valentine was not on the lease (her mother Ms. Iris Rosa was the tenant-of-record despite never living in the apartment), the Court found that she was …

The Enduring Relevance Of The Right To Strike: Arguments For Further Legal Protection And Regulatory Reform, Tonia Novitz, Katherine Fitzpatrick, Jeffrey Vogt
The Enduring Relevance Of The Right To Strike: Arguments For Further Legal Protection And Regulatory Reform, Tonia Novitz, Katherine Fitzpatrick, Jeffrey Vogt
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
In this thematic issue, the contributors demonstrate the past and contemporary relevance of a right to strike. Some authors do so with reference to the long-standing role that such an entitlement plays in protecting dignity, democracy, and other vital public interests. Attention is also paid to emerging contemporary issues, whereby the right to strike offers important leverage that would otherwise be absent, for example countering abusive treatment of those at work in global supply chain practices and the environmental degradation of the planet. They all conclude that, while it is possible to utilise existing legal protections of a right to …
Strikes And The Struggle For Democracy, Angela B. Cornell, Ruth Dukes
Strikes And The Struggle For Democracy, Angela B. Cornell, Ruth Dukes
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
The right to strike is fundamental to the development and maintenance of democratic forms of government. In struggles to construct and defend democratic regimes, strikes, including general strikes, are often an important weapon. In established democracies, the right to strike can aid the spread of democratic decision-making in workplaces and the wider economy, serving indirectly to strengthen participation and confidence in political processes and institutions. And it can underpin systems of collective bargaining that function to narrow income and wealth inequalities, in a manner that is conducive, if not necessary, to the maintenance of democratic government. Wherever the right to …
Dignity And The Right To Strike, Sergio Gamonal C
Dignity And The Right To Strike, Sergio Gamonal C
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
“Dignity” expresses the idea that a human being should never be treated as a means but always as an end. “Dignity” also encompasses a communitarian and relational approach, such as belonging, collective action and “dignity in action”. When we recognize and seek to remedy indignities, we also confer a certain dignity on ourselves. How can these notions be linked to the right to strike? I shall argue that the right to strike underpins the dignity of workers and that this connection is implicit in Advisory Opinion OC-27/21 of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. In national and international courts, such …

Balancing The Right To Strike And Other Public Interests: The Importance Of The Status Of The Right To Strike, Petra Herzfeld Olsson, Shae Mccrystal
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
The regulation of strike action involves the balancing of competing public interests – the benefits derived from collective bargaining and the right to strike and others including public safety, health, welfare, and industrial peace. We explore how this balancing act plays out in the legal systems of two national jurisdictions, Australia and Sweden, and through the ILO principles on freedom of association as developed by the ILO’s supervisory bodies. We seek to understand how different regulatory approaches to these competing public interests produces different outcomes and the potential consequences where protecting other public interests is prioritised over the right to …
Labour Against The Law? Contesting The Restrictive Norms Of Industrial Legality Through Unlawful Strikes, Eric Tucker
Labour Against The Law? Contesting The Restrictive Norms Of Industrial Legality Through Unlawful Strikes, Eric Tucker
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
North American regimes of industrial legality provide workers with protected rights to organize, bargain collectively, and strike. However, they also limit the freedom to strike. Trade unions commonly accept and enforce these limits but at great cost to solidarity and militancy. This article examines the many ways law works against labour by restricting the freedom to strike and explores the practice of unlawful strikes in North America, including recent examples that resulted in successful outcomes. It concludes with reflections on the revival of unlawful strikes as a tactic for rebuilding and remobilizing the North American labour movement. While the article’s …
Strike Law And Workers’ Power Resources In Global Supply Chains And Platform Giants, Judy Fudge, Hila Shamir
Strike Law And Workers’ Power Resources In Global Supply Chains And Platform Giants, Judy Fudge, Hila Shamir
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
The right to strike is a key feature of freedom of association and effective collective bargaining. We consider how the legal regulation of strikes and boycotts affects the power resources available to workers and unions to improve working conditions and workers’ voice in firms, such as global supply chains and platform giants, that utilize network-of-contracts business models. We begin by bringing the literatures on power resources theory and supply chain and platform capitalism into conversation. Treating law as a form of institutional power influencing workers’ ability to exercise other power resources in network-of-contracts business models, we then examine how the …

Turning Up The Heat: The Right To Strike And The Climate Crisis, Jeffrey Vogt, Ruwan Subasinghe
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
The negative impacts of climate change on the world of work around the world are serious and certain to worsen. Further, the actions needed to mitigate and adapt to these impacts will be deeply disruptive. In 2015, the tripartite constituents of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) unanimously endorsed the ILO Guidelines for a just transition towards environmentally sustainable economies and societies (reaffirmed in 2023), which includes among its guiding principles the right to freedom of association and, by extension, the right to strike — an intrinsic corollary. This article explores potential bases for a right to strike in the context …
The Last Human Job: The Work Of Connecting In A Disconnected World By Allison J. Pugh, Princeton University Press, 2024, Karen Levy
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
“I FEEL SO SEEN!” has become a Gen-Z catchphrase for the sense of personal validation when something you experience resonates with your own way of being in the world — say, when you learn that a lyric you’ve always misheard is also misunderstood by someone else, or that a guilty pleasure in which you indulge isn’t unique to you. These days, the phrase is often thrown around light-heartedly online in response to memes or TikTok videos. But the experience of really “being seen” is far from trivial; it’s a form of recognition essential to human functioning and community. Seeing another …

The State Of School-Based Ot Practice Regarding Concussion-Related Vision Disorders, Kimberly Meany, Emily Behnke, Ariks Lanctot, Audrey Maynard, Samuel Szarowicz
Masters Projects
Purpose: More than 830,000 pediatric patients yearly are affected by a concussion (Rosenbaum, 2020). Occupational therapists can support a child's performance in the classroom. Yet, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the current practice of occupational therapists treating those with a concussion in the school setting. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand school-based occupational therapy practice regarding concussion-related vision disorders.
Design: Cross-sectional survey. Participants were licensed OTs practicing in the US, working in a school-based or related pediatric setting, with more than two years of pediatric experience, holding at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited …

The Ruptured Atlas project (December 2023 – December 2024) employs innovative, participatory mapping techniques to document the complex spatial and lived experiences of the Yazidi community in the aftermath of the genocide perpetrated by ISIS, which commenced in August 2014. This collaborative effort involves 15 Yazidi researchers and key partners, culminating in an online atlas and a trauma-informed policy toolkit. Designed to influence housing and migration policies in both Iraq and the UK, the project prioritises trauma-informed practices and community empowerment. The online atlas was not only a conceptual device, but a vital visual tool, enabling participants to represent trauma …
Multiple Molecular Diagnoses Identified Through Genome Sequencing In Individuals With Suspected Rare Disease, Jorge Perez
Multiple Molecular Diagnoses Identified Through Genome Sequencing In Individuals With Suspected Rare Disease, Jorge Perez
All Publications
Genome sequencing is a powerful and comprehensive test that detects multiple variants of different types. The interrogation of variants across the genome enables the identification of multiple molecular diagnoses (MMDs) in a single individual. In this retrospective study, we describe individuals in whom MMDs were associated with the proband's indication for testing (IFT), secondary findings, or incidental findings. An MMD is considered where at least one of the findings is associated with the primary IFT and all variants are classified as either likely pathogenic or pathogenic. Clinical genome sequencing was performed for all individuals as part of the iHope program …

Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a globally vital forage crop valued for its perennial growth and multiple annual harvests. A breeding effort is underway to improve the crop for productivity and persistence against biotic and abiotic stresses using “creeping rootedness,” a trait where plants exhibit horizontal root growth, similar to rhizomes, with increased vegetative ground surface area. In this study, we genotyped a breeding population of 648 alfalfa lines segregating for creeping rootedness using the 3K DArTag marker panel to identify trait-associated genomic loci and evaluate the feasibility of genomic prediction to accelerate breeding cycles. Using genome-wide association studies …

RNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) plays a crucial role in regulating gene expression during early embryonic development. However, the m6A dynamics at single-nucleotide resolution in preimplantation development remain uncharacterized, and the functional significance of site specific m6A modifications in key developmental regulators is largely unknown. Here, using SAC-seq, a single-base resolution, antibody-independent m6A profiling method, we generate the first comprehensive m6A landscape in bovine oocytes and preimplantation embryos. We identify a previously uncharacterized m6A site in RPL12 transcript that is essential for embryonic development. Loss of m6A at this site leads to reduced protein synthesis, disrupted expression of translation-related genes, and …

Increasing The Economic And Social Viability Of Carbon Capture Using Biomass Slurry Fracture Injection, Zachary G. Laird
LSU Master's Theses
The climate is changing. This is a fact not a statement, not a theory, and not a falsehood, this is a fact. At the current projections the world’s average temperature is expected to rise by at least 2°C from pre-industrial averages by 2050 (Emissions Pathways to 2100 - Climate Action Tracker, 2024). This temperature rise will be catastrophic for a vast number of communities. What is driving this changing climate? Humans. In particular the carbon emissions caused by human activities. As humans we consume large amounts of meat, causing the need for cattle to increase, generating large amounts …
