Investigation Of Subcellular Damage And Long-Term Non-Cancerous Cardiovascular Effects Following Whole-Body Photon Irradiation, Nousha Afshari
Investigation Of Subcellular Damage And Long-Term Non-Cancerous Cardiovascular Effects Following Whole-Body Photon Irradiation, Nousha Afshari
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Current radiobiological models focus primarily on nuclear DNA damage and fail to fully explain radiation-induced noncancerous health effects. This dissertation investigates whether non-nuclear subcellular structures contribute to radiation-induced biological damage through experimental biomarker analysis and computational microdosimetry. The central hypothesis posits that whole-body photon irradiation results in subcellular non-nuclear damage, specifically increased circulating mitochondrial DNA concentrations, that correlates with radiation dose and long-term noncancerous effects such as cardiovascular disease.
Specific Aim 1 measured mitochondrial and nuclear DNA concentrations in banked blood samples from 72 Chinese rhesus macaques that previously received whole-body photon irradiation ($0-10$ Gy) from Cobalt-60 or LINAC sources. …

Background: Long coronavirus disease (COVID), which affects an estimated 44.69-48.04 million people in the United States, is an ongoing public health concern that will persist as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to spread.
Methods: We developed a computational simulation model representing the clinical course, health effects, and associated costs of a person with long COVID.
Results: Simulations show that the average total cost of a long COVID case can range from $5084-$11 646 (assuming symptoms only last 1 year) with 92.5%-95.2% of these costs being productivity losses. Therefore, the current number of long COVID cases could cost …

All Decisions
The court granted the tenant's motion to dismiss a nonpayment case because the landlord could not produce a valid lease for the period in which the alleged arrears accrued. The landlord's argument that a "HUD Model Lease" provided for a perpetual lease was rejected by the court, which found that the rental amount changing from year to year made the lease indefinite on a material term. Consequently, with no lease in effect for the relevant time, the landlord could not maintain the nonpayment proceeding.

Research Reports
The report analyses the adoption of FOSS in India, primarily through case studies across four sectors (healthcare, education, finance, and software and IT services) and different types of organisations (start-ups, non-profits, medium, large, and public sector organisations). The study highlights both the benefits and challenges experienced by organisations using FOSS. The study illustrates that while organisations benefit from increased innovations, cost/ time savings, flexibility, and enhanced security, they also face challenges such as lack of enough skilled personnel and limited community support. Organisations are also seen taking a cautious approach to licensing, favouring permissive licenses over restrictive ones. Based on …

Unveiling The Clinicopathological Outcomes Of Breast Cancer In Young Women: A Perspective From Resource-Limited Settings, Kulsoom Shaikh, Aiman Arif, Mehwish Mooghal, Lubna Vohra
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: This study aimed to assess the incidence of breast cancer in young women over a ten-year period and examine its association with clinical characteristics, risk factors, treatment modalities, and survival outcomes. Methods: A retrospective analysis of the Breast Cancer Registry at our institution was conducted. Of the 2,238 women diagnosed with breast cancer between 2012 and 2021, 535 (23.9%) were aged 40 years or younger at the time of diagnosis. Cases with missing data for independent variables were excluded from the respective analyses. Results: The mean age at diagnosis was 34.5 years (range: 15–40). The most common clinical …

New Approaches To Media Education
New Approaches To Media Education
Communication Research Trends
There is increasing consensus among educators around the world that some form of education for the use of the public media - especially television - should be an integral part of the primary and secondary school education.
Teachers are daily experiencing the fact that one of the major cultural influences forming the imagination of their students is the often long hours watching television. Sometimes television is a more important 'educational experience' than the school. Too often, however, the school, family life and the· television set are three mutually antagonistic or indifferent poles that leave young people drifting in a no …
The Challenge Of Cable Television
The Challenge Of Cable Television
Communication Research Trends
Cable television is at least thirty years old, yet it is still talked of as a new communications medium. Why? Optimists say because it has yet to realise its multi-channel potential to enrich and diversify television programming. Even better, cable will provide the citizen with a host of interactive information, educational, and transaction services.
Sceptics see cable offering old programming in new packages. They ask: Will only the well-off benefit? Who will control cable systems? Can privacy be protected? Does cable TV damage public service broadcasting? What do we really want cable for?
In many countries cable is on the …

The Carpet Bag Correspondence, Russell J. Desimone, Erik J. Chaput
Dorr Scholarship
In late December 1842 and early 1843 there appeared several newspaper articles in the Providence Journal under the caption of “The Carpet Bag” Correspondence. In all four letters were published in the local newspapers all claiming to be from the carpet bag. Two of the letters were written by Dutee J. Pearce of Newport to Thomas Dorr the leader of the suffrage movement in Rhode Island. The other two letters were written to Dorr by Dr. J.A. Brown and Louis Lapham. The second Pearce letter is interesting because it discusses giving the Black community a jury trial.

Constructing Victims And Perpetrators: A Textual Analysis Of Media Discourses On Sexual Violence, Farah Ali
Global Language Studies Faculty publications
Sexual violence has become increasingly visible in the public eye, which has in turn prompted scholarly research across disciplines to critically examine how such cases are handled, ranging from the investigation processes to how the accused and accusing parties are impacted. Linguistic research in particular has made an important contribution to our understanding of the role of language in interpreting and evaluating sexual violence by focusing on the narrations of specific cases. Yet linguistic perspectives are somewhat sparse with regard to mass media discourse, which can play an influential role in shaping discussions on sexual violence. This study examines discourse …

Rhetoric And Reality: The P&O Ferries Scandal And The Right To Strike, Alan Bogg
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
This article considers the freedom of association implications of the mass dismissals at P&O Ferries in 2022, in light of the Committee on Freedom of Association’s recent consideration of a complaint by affected trade unions. It identifies an important strategic shift in British trade unions’ engagement with legal enforcement. This involves an attenuation of the strong historical attachment to “voluntarism” in British industrial relations. It then considers some legal implications of the P&O Ferries scandal under the European Convention on Human Rights. It concludes by identifying a phenomenon of “state-managed deregulation” in the maritime sector, whereby company de-collectivization is facilitated …
