Congressional hearing witnesses play a major role in the legislative process, providing information to committees to assist members and staff in crafting legislation. Recently, there has been increasing focus on the impact of congressional witnesses on legislative outcomes, executive implementation of federal statutes, and corresponding judicial decisions. This has raised questions as to the extent to which the underrepresentation of women and other marginalized groups as congressional witnesses can be measured and how their lack of representation translates to inequitable outcomes across all branches of government. Data Physicalization (DP) is an emerging field that encodes data into physical artefacts to foster tangible interaction, understanding, and engagement. This paper investigates the interplay between data encoding, user interaction, and design principles within DP, focusing on feedback and feedforward mechanisms. Through a scoping review and the development of an annotated portfolio of 36 case studies, the study categorizes DP into three types: static, constructive, and dynamic. Each type presents unique characteristics influencing how data is experienced and interacted with by users. As sustainability challenges grow increasingly complex, the limitations of traditional, data-centric research approaches become apparent. This paper argues that the transition towards sustainability necessitates not just technological innovations, but a fundamental ontological shift in how we structure knowledge claims. Modernist systems of values in research, characterised by control, reductionism, and quantification, often marginalised tacit knowledge, indigenous ways of knowing, and intuition. GeoAI technologies have expanded the analytic power of cartography by processing vast geospatial datasetsto detect patterns, generate multiscale maps, and unify siloed information. This study examines the transformative role of generative AI (GenAI) in design through the lens of the material turn, which foregrounds materiality’s agency in shaping human practices. In this context, GenAI is not a mere tool but an active participant in co-creation, challenging subject-object distinctions in design philosophy. Drawing on ontological design, postphenomenology, cognitive science, and material engagement theory, we reinterpret creativity as an emergent phenomenon within sociomaterial networks. Our framework reveals design as a relational process, where creativity unfolds through adaptive interactions, shifting the designer’s role from control to orchestration. This paper explores the dual issues of labor and environmental exploitation in sugar cane plantations in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, focusing on these countries' actions in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Chapter 1 outlines the relevant SDGs, particularly those addressing labor conditions and pollution reduction. It discusses several types of pollution and its impact on laborers and surrounding communities, framing these impacts within the concept of environmental justice. The overall purpose of this project is to evaluate active gene expression in heart tissue samples infected by the Epstein-Barr virus. By cataloging active gene expression, one could elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underpin viral infection’s role in the development of heart pathology. This was accomplished by extracting nucleic acids from homogenized heart tissue samples, employing reverse-transcription PCR (RT-PCR) to synthesize cDNA from extracted mRNA), and performing a qPCR to quantify the levels of gene expression from these cDNA samples. This report examines the relationship between Jibu franchises and the technology they rely upon to conduct their most critical business operations. Jibu’s Point of Sale (POS) System is the online platform where Jibu franchises track sales, inventory, production, and delivery. While Jibu franchises agree that this iteration of the POS is the best of the three previous technology systems, it still has significant limitations that affect its usability. The POS system is serviceable at tracking big picture numbers like total sales, customers, and liters sold. This thesis examines the history of how Black Mississippians in the greater Madison County area have conceptualized land ownership since circa 1970 in order to understand how acquiring land has historically been seen as a significant source of financial, social, and mental security for Black folks in rural Madison County. By looking at oral history interviews from mostly the Garrett family and other Black Madison County citizens and archival materials, one will see how connection to land and place—despite the land being listed under heirs’ property— is the underpinning of familial affinity and association. In 2021 and 2024, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration published the first polarized images of the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) M87* and Sgr A*, which allowed us to place important constraints on the accretion flow and underlying space-time. Of particular interest is the dimensionless spin parameter "a_•", which theoretically may attain a maximum value of a_• = 0.998 when spun up by a thin accretion disk. On the other hand, mechanisms including incoherent accretion, SMBH mergers, and spin extraction via jets, are hypothesized to spin down SMBHs from these near-extremal values. Using a historical approach I examined race discourse within the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) between 1883 and 1982 to better understand how race concepts connect to the production of medical knowledge and ignorance; how they influenced the production of legal and medical policy; how they related to the production and maintenance of health injustice; and how oppressions and injustices are interrelated. I found a clear differentiation between Jim Crow era and post-Jim Crow race discourse.
