The (Dis)Continuity Of Meaning In John Dewey’S Experience And Nature, Harrison S. Jackson

Experience and Nature proposes a naturalistic empiricism emphasizing continuity. This paper will argue that this continuity is threatened by Dewey’s anthropocentric in its account of meaning, which is only found in humans but is necessary for the perception of objects, communication, and social existence. Given contemporary research in ethology, Dewey’s denotative method requires a modification of this account. I will propose Merleau-Ponty’s notion of sense or the neuroscientific theory of enactivism as supplements preserving embodiment and social communication while being more continuous. Finally, I examine some recent applications of Dewey’s naturalism and show how they modify this account of meaning.

A method for identifying the active contraction properties can include inputting a plurality of clinical metrics into a deep learning model. The court held that court-ordered use and occupancy payments are not "voluntarily paid" rent under MDL § 302(b), allowing these claims to proceed in a related action. The court also reinstated a claim for accounting of the security deposit and attorneys' fees, finding the landlord failed to prove non-commingling. However, claims for harassment, retaliatory eviction, and constructive eviction were dismissed.

Accurate evaluation of the prevailing traffic operations plays an important part in developing sustainable transport systems. This research examines the suitability of the level of service (LOS) criteria developed by the Indian and United States (US) Highway Capacity Manuals (HCM) for heterogeneous and undisciplined traffic streams and proposes new criteria using a data-driven approach. Traffic data were collected from a selected major arterial in Karachi, and fundamental diagrams were developed using these data. Adoption functions as both an identity status and a source of unique social benefits and challenges for teenagers, informing their experience of friendship. While prior research primarily focuses on individual outcomes and difficulties that adoptees face, such as trauma-related disorders and social skill deficits, it often overlooks how adoptees and their parents perceive these impacts on peer relationships. This study draws on twenty-one in-depth interviews with adoptees ages thirteen to twenty-one and their adoptive parents to explore the role that adoption and adverse childhood experiences have on an adopted teen’s experience of friendships. Immune checkpoint inhibition (ICI) has emerged as a critical treatment strategy for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC) that halts the immune escape of the tumor cells. Increasing evidence suggests that the onset, progression, and lack of/no response of HNSCC to ICI are emergent properties arising from the interactions within the tumor microenvironment (TME). Deciphering how the diversity of cellular and molecular interactions leads to distinct HNSCC TME subtypes subsequently governing the ICI response remains largely unexplored. Restoration of the tumor suppressor function of tumor-associated p53 mutants, including the Y220C substitution, has posed a significant challenge for therapeutic discovery. In this study, we describe rezatapopt (PC14586), part of a series of compounds designed to reactivate the p53 Y220C mutant. These compounds restore p53 tumor suppressor function by correcting its conformation and enabling it to bind DNA and activate downstream target genes, thus inducing antiproliferative changes in tumor cells. Our findings are supported by biochemical and structural analysis, in vitro and in vivo transcriptomics, and functional data, revealing the recovery of multiple aspects of the wild-type p53 program. …

INTRODUCTION: Time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) is a highly accurate method for determining the true cost of delivering a healthcare service. However, TDABC is most often applied to a singular phase of care such as an outpatient visit or a surgical event. Here we broaden the scope by using TDABC to estimate the costs of surgically treating cervical myelopathy - from the moment of surgical scheduling until post-operative hospital discharge.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a global health risk that increases patients’ risk for premature mortality and is accompanied by pathologic cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. Declining kidney function results in elevations of serum phosphate and Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) 23, a bone-derived phosphaturic hormone. Hyperphosphatemia and elevated FGF23 are associated with cardiovascular mortality in CKD. FGF23 can directly target cardiac myocytes via FGF Receptor (FGFR) 4 and induce cardiac hypertrophy and blocking FGFR4 signaling in CKD models reduces cardiac hypertrophy, but not fibrosis. FGF23 elevations are also observed following exercise and during pregnancy, two scenarios of physiologic hypertrophy not associated …

Coronaviruses have evolved a breadth of mechanisms to antagonize host innate immune responses. One widely studied mechanism is the ability to deconjugate ISG15 from target proteins in a process called deISGylation, which is catalyzed by the papain-like protease (PLP) domain of viral non-structural protein (nsp) 3. Since PLP activity is required for viral replication, it has been challenging to generate an infectious virus with a PLP that maintains protease activity but has lost deISGylase activity. Biofilms are aggregates of bacteria encased in a matrix that shields bacteria from environmental hazards. These structures are formed in response to cues from the environment and drive colonization of new niches. Biofilms can be both beneficial and detrimental. Largely, research focuses on biofilms that have negative outcomes in clinical, environmental, and economical settings. However, the value of beneficial biofilms is recognized and studied. The marine bacterium Vibrio fischeri is part of a model system for studying symbiotic biofilms in a eukaryotic host. This study investigated the differences in emotional facial expressivity between people with aphasia (PWA) and control participants during emotional discourse tasks. Participants consisted of 26 PWA and 26 control participants from Aphasia Talk Bank who retold a stroke or illness story and an important life event story, totaling 104 video files. Undergraduate research assistants were trained to code emotional facial expressions according to valence, intensity, and duration utilizing a modified Facial Expression Coding System (FACES; Kring & Sloan, 1991). Background: NLRP2 is a subcortical maternal complex (SCMC) protein of mammalian oocytes and preimplantation embryos. SCMC proteins are encoded by maternal effect genes and play a pivotal role in the maternal-to-zygotic transition (MZT), early embryogenesis, and epigenetic (re)programming. Maternal inactivation of genes encoding SCMC proteins has been linked to infertility and subfertility in mice and humans, but the underlying molecular mechanisms for the diverse functions of SCMC proteins, and specifically the role of NLRP2, are incompletely understood.

There is an extensive Maghrebi population in France as a result of France’s colonial history in the region and subsequent migration. Drawing on Judith Butler’s framework of compulsory heterosexuality, as well as Robert McRuer’s use of this framework in his own theory of compulsory able-bodiedness, this paper critiques the notion that thinness is merely a beauty standard. Rather, this paper argues that thinness is a marker of superiority that requires the subordination of fat individuals and is upheld by the historically informed, albeit fabricated, narrative that being thin is right. The territory around Igatu, as that of many villages in southeastern Chapada Diamantina (Bahia, Brazil), was deeply modified by diamond mine activity. Caves were special targets for miners, since they can act as diamond-bearing sediment traps, and the Canal da Fumaça Cave was one of the most important and rich of them. The question that arises is whether the formation is a natural cave or an artificial diamond mine. Every visitor interaction has a set of meanings, values, and narratives that visitors knowingly or unknowingly espouse. Pine savannas of the southeastern United States evolved with frequent low-intensity wildfires. Today, land managers use prescribed fires to restore this ecological process while also controlling vegetative fuel accumulation. Given the ubiquitous application of this management tool, studies should consider impacts on target and nontarget taxa in these systems. During fires, animal populations persist in the landscape when individuals emigrate to unburned areas or seek refugia within the burn zone; otherwise, they experience local extirpation. Landlords challenged New York's Vacancy Provisions, alleging Fourth Amendment violations for warrantless searches of rent rolls and Fourteenth Amendment due process violations concerning vacancy calculations. The court affirmed dismissal, holding that Article 78 proceedings provide sufficient pre-compliance review for record demands, and the low risk of coercion mitigates Fourth Amendment concerns. Due process was satisfied by opportunities for landlords to contest vacancy calculations through public hearings and subsequent Article 78 review, ensuring constitutional muster.
