Counseling, Leadership, and Research Methods Faculty Publications and Presentations

For many counselors, both topics of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and harm reduction practices can feel intimidating and unclear. Yet, depending on the client, discussion of complete and immediate cessation from NSSI can feel impossible and isolating. This article combines harm reduction principles, a concept initially developed for addiction treatment, with select existing recommendations for NSSI treatment to offer a clinician's guide to best practices for harm reduction implementation with clients engaging in NSSI. By meeting clients where they are and offering a supportive space to brainstorm nontraditional treatment options, counselors can maintain the core principles of the American Counseling Association's …

Teacher perceptions of and decisions about students’ academic ability and behavior are key to the micro-level production and maintenance of inequality at the intersection of gender, race, and disability in schools, yet we know little about how these micro-level processes relate to meso-level features. Using an experimental survey design of 369 factorial vignettes, I tested for racial and gender differences in 276 teachers’ ratings of referral to begin disability evaluations—what I call the deployment of disability—across 115 Wisconsin schools with varying racial compositions. Findings show that teachers in schools with low proportions of White students were less likely to deploy …

At first glance, studying the basic structure doctrine in Malaysia can be frustrating due to its inconsistent judicial treatment. While early cases such as Loh Kooi Choon and Phang Chin Hock rejected the doctrine, it was later accepted in landmark decisions like Sivarasa Rasiah, Semenyih Jaya, and Indira Gandhi. In 2020, scholars such as Jaclyn Neo and Yvonne Tew suggested a judicial embrace of the doctrine and its global trend toward constitutional unamendability. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the theoretical foundations of the factorization theorems that involve transverse quark and gluon momentum distributions, and to better understand the interface between foundational questions and phenomenological applications. Many of these applications involve using transverse parton momentum dependent (TMD) correlation functions as tools for probing the complex nonperturbative structures of the hadrons.

Deep learning (DL) has become a powerful tool for solving complex problems, but developing DL models typically requires vast datasets, high computational resources, and expert knowledge—barriers that limit accessibility. Machine Learning as a Service (MLaaS) addresses this challenge by allowing resource-rich providers to deliver pre-trained DL models as services. However, privacy concerns arise: clients hesitate to share sensitive data, while providers protect their proprietary models. Economists have long argued that increasing resource scarcity can lead to more clearly defined individual property rights, but the precise mechanism whereby this occurs remains unclear to this day. This paper documents the role of politics in shaping the creation of individual property rights within the context of appropriative water law in early 20th century California, finding evidence of both party ideology and interest group influence in establishing a new system for administering appropriative water rights.

The Aggregate Welfare And Trade Implications Of Contracting Frictions In Global Sourcing, Davin Chor, Lin Ma

How much do contracting frictions between global firms and their suppliers impact country welfare and trade? We answer this by developing a model of global sourcing under partial contractibility, where firm-supplier relationships are exposed to a bilateral holdup problem. Sourcing decisions aggregate into a gravity equation for trade flows by organizational mode (intrafirm vs. arm’s length), which we take to structural estimation. We can then evaluate welfare changes with an extended Arkolakis, Costinot and Rodriguez-Clare (2012) formula that incorporates these contracting frictions. Our counterfactual analysis reveals a sizeable average country welfare gain of 9.2% from eliminating contracting frictions in global …

ABSTRACT Objectives: To evaluate the clinicopathological features of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NENs) over 11 years at a single tertiary institution in Saudi Arabia. Methods: In a retrospective review, data from 71 patients diagnosed with GEP-NEN, at a tertiary academic center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between January 2014 to December 2024, were analyzed for demographics, clinical presentation, tumor location, size, pathology, grade, and immunohistochemistry. The statistical analyses included Chi-square, Mann-Whitney-U, and Spearman’s correlation tests. Results: The cohort had a mean age of 54.9±15.1 years and comprised 62% males. ABSTRACT Objectives: To evaluate dupilumab’s outcomes in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) cases. Methods: A retrospective analysis was carried out at Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospitals, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 145 adult CRSwNP patients treated with dupilumab between January 2020 and December 2023 following the European position paper on rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps 2020 guidelines. Primary outcomes included changes in Lund-Mackay computed tomography (CT) scores, immunoglobulin E levels, and visual analog scale (VAS) smell score over +12 months. Results: Significant improvements were noted post-treatment. Lund-Mackay CT scores decreased from 12.5 to 5.5 ( p <0.001), and VAS smell scores dropped from 10.0 to 0.0 ( p <0.001). Immunoglobulin E levels reduced from 250.5 to 63.5 ( p <0.001). After treatment, 93.3% of patients avoided sinus surgery, 78.6% reported improved asthma status, and 60% used dupilumab as monotherapy. Conclusion: This study supports dupilumab’s effectiveness in treating severe CRSwNP, showing significant improvements in CT imaging and overall medical condition over 12 months. Dupilumab reduced systemic corticosteroid use and rescue surgeries. While promising, further trials are needed to validate its use as monotherapy. Identifying those who gain most from biologic therapy is crucial.

Christian faith-based organizations constituted a significant proportion of shelter programs for survivors of sex trafficking in the United States, with an estimated 63% identifying as Christian-affiliated (Institute for Survivor Care, 2024). Despite their prevalence, such programs often elicited skepticism due to the rise of secularism (Pew Research, 2022) and concerns that spiritual programming might retraumatize survivors (Ahrens et al., 2010; Hodge, 2020). However, Ahrens et al. (2010) and Hodge (2020) also found that religious practices can be helpful. Gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC) remains a significant global health challenge, with over a million new cases annually. Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC), detected in ∼20 % of cases at diagnosis and ∼45 % later, is uniformly fatal, with limited treatment options. This study investigated the role of KAP1 in GAC progression, focusing on its interaction with YAP1 and cancer stemness traits. Analysis of over 596 primary GACs and 72 PC samples revealed that high nuclear KAP1 expression correlates with poor prognosis. KAP1 knockdown reduced oncogenic activity and stemness traits in GAC cells. Mechanistically, KAP1 positively regulates YAP1 transcription by binding to its promoter …

This dissertation consists of two essays. In the first paper, I find that machine learning (ML) models predict the likelihood and magnitude of insider trading significantly better than linear models such as OLS and logistic regression. I use ML models, including LASSO, Random Forest, and eXtreme Gradient Boosting, optimizing model parameters through Bayesian hyperparameter tuning to identify the best configuration. Additionally, I apply SHAP values to better understand the determinants of insider trading. I also use Gaussian Thompson Sampling (GTS) to explore the sources of insiders’ market-timing capabilities. This dissertation presents a novel framework for p-adic reaction-diffusion cellular neural networks (CNNs) with delay, offering new insights into the stability and dynamic behavior of these networks. Through numerical simulations, we explore their response to various conditions, highlighting their capability to model complex systems. Additionally, this work reviews cutting-edge developments in p-adic CNNs, particularly their application to advanced image processing tasks such as edge detection and noise filtering, demonstrating their effectiveness in preserving critical image features while filtering out noise. Cytidine Triphosphate Specifically Modulates Parb-Mediated Dna Compaction: Insights From Single-Molecule Analysis And Parb C-Terminal Lysine Mutagenesis, Lois Akosua Serwaa

ParB is a central player in bacterial chromosome segregation, and cytidine triphosphate (CTP) is known to modulate its DNA compaction activity. This study explored whether CTP’s regulatory effect is due to specific molecular interactions beyond its known CTP-binding pocket. Using single-molecule flow-stretching and TIRF microscopy, we showed that CTP significantly reduces DNA compaction by wild-type Bacillus subtilis ParB, while ATP has no effect, supporting the hypothesis that CTP acts through specific recognition rather than general charge. CTP’s modulatory effect persisted across C-terminal domain (CTD) lysine mutants. Compaction was reduced in wild-type and K255A but abolished in K252A and K259A. The …

Mitochondrial dynamics occurring under stress-induced conditions in SHSY5Y neuroblastoma cells provide insight into the OPA1-mediated mitochondrial fusion threshold in cells of varying energetic demands. Mitochondria are dynamic structures that are continuously balancing fusion and fission, depending on cellular needs. The ability to fuse and divide relies on the maintenance of the mitochondrial transmembrane potential. Stress-induced conditions in SHSY5Y cells were induced via utilization of carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP), a protonophore that disrupts the transmembrane potential. OMA1 protein reacts to the loss of transmembrane potential and subsequently cleaves the fusion-active isoforms of OPA1, L-OPA1. This causes an accumulation of S-OPA1, the …

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive astrocytoma tumor type with a poor prognosis and limited immunotherapeutic options for those inflicted. Stem gene expression of this cancer indicates a direct relationship with the transcription factors, Forkhead box subfamily O (FOXO-1, -3 and - 4). These transcription factors are evolutionarily conserved, partially redundant. They are involved in diverse and fundamental biological processes such as cell survival, stem cell homeostasis, cell fate determination, cell cycle maintenance, metabolism, and apoptosis. This paper advocates for a pragmatic and virtue-ethics-based approach to urban sustainability initiatives that prioritizes the consideration of moral responsibility. Looking at literature on rewilding, this paper argues that the principle of ecophronesis, and the larger discipline of ecopracticology, offers a compelling framework for integrating diverse opinions on the future of conservation from different disciplines and ecological stakeholders. Ultimately, an ecophronetic approach to urban sustainability initiatives facilitates a sense of conceptual rewilding that disregards the nature-culture dualism paradigm limiting Western environmental thought and may help address the perceived alienation from nature characterized by nature-deficit disorder.
