The taxonomic position of Androctonus populations in Oman was investigated by analyzing morphological variation in a comprehensive sample representing 150 records gathered from 95 localities spread throughout the country. Two new allopatric species are described, separated by multivariate morphometric analysis and meristic characters: (1) A. omanensis sp. n., distributed across most of Oman, is characterized by wider, deeper metasomal segments IV–V, shorter legs, more robust pedipalps, more granules on lateral inframedian carinae of metasoma II–III, and sparser setation on basitarsal spurs; and (2) A. ammophilus sp. n., distributed in the dunes of the Rub’ al-Khali (Empty Quarter) of …

Adult hippocampal neurogenesis, the process of generating new neurons, relies on a rare population of neural stem and progenitor cells (NPCs) within the dentate gyrus complex microenvironment. Discovering the specific genes that define these cells is vital yet challenging due to overlapping expression patterns, limiting detection of rare cell populations using traditional approaches. By employing the computational digital sorting algorithm (DSA) that deconvolves complex gene expression data based on pattern recognition, we identified 129 genes enriched in murine NPCs. We validated these genes against published single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data and discovered that 25 human orthologs were known to cause …

Despite widespread concern about teacher shortages, there is little evidence on when teaching positions are posted and how many people apply for them. Using detailed job-posting and application data on nearly 57,000 applicants from 19 traditional school districts and 24 charter organizations, we provide descriptive evidence on the timing of job postings, the supply of applicants, and the characteristics of applicants, emphasizing how each varies across organizations and between the district and charter sectors. We find that late hiring is less prevalent than prior single-district studies suggest—about 11% of openings are posted late—but varies widely across organizations. Applicant supply differs …

Public opinion on punitiveness is an important topic of study because it can influence political elites’ decision making when developing legislation. This study focused on the role gender ideology and anti-transgender attitudes on punitiveness while controlling for religious and political conservatism. The 2020 American National Election Study (ANES) was used to examine the association between conservatism, traditional gender roles, and anti-transgender attitudes on their influence of punitiveness. Three ordinal logistic regressions were run for each type of punitiveness (i.e., death penalty support, crime spending, and felon disenfranchisement). Results indicated that religious conservatives had lesser odds for supporting the death penalty …

Background: The increased utilization of oral factor Xa inhibitors (FXaI) has led to a growing interest in the clinical utility of FXaI-specific anti-Xa concentrations. Critically ill populations are at risk of bleeding secondary to FXaI accumulation in the setting of end-organ dysfunction. To mitigate this risk, an FXaI anti-Xa concentration-guided approach to transitioning between oral and parenteral anticoagulation has been explored.

INTRODUCTION: The Box and Blocks Test (BBT) is a widely used measure of manual dexterity, but its validity and reliability as an outcome measure for upper extremity function in children with Traumatic Elbow Injuries (TEI) require further investigation. This study aimed to evaluate the BBT's test-retest reliability, sensitivity to functional change (construct validity), and discriminative validity in this specific pediatric population. METHOD: Twenty-nine children (75.9% male; age range: 6-16 years) with TEI participated in a prospective study. The term “too big to fail” became ubiquitous following the 2007-2008 Global Financial Crisis. Lawmakers, regulators, and scholars wondered if there was a better way forward than issuing an array of ad hoc bailout packages to large financial institutions. Congress, in enacting the Dodd-Frank Act, sought to address the concern by creating a new regulatory framework to resolve large financial institutions in an orderly manner.

Invariant maps are a useful tool for turbulence modelling, and the rapid growth of machine learning-based turbulence modelling research has led to renewed interest in them. They allow different turbulent states to be visualised in an interpretable manner and provide a mathematical framework to analyse or enforce realisability. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients experience shifts between non-seizing and seizing brain states, but the structural networks underlying these transitions remain undefined and poorly characterized. We detected dynamic brain states in resting-state fMRI and constructed linked structural networks utilizing multi-shell diffusion-weighted MR data. Leveraging network control theory, we interrogated the structural data for all possible brain state transitions, identifying those requiring abnormal levels of transition energy (low or high) in TLE compared to matched healthy participants (n's = 25). Results revealed three transitions requiring significantly higher energy in TLE; no abnormally low-energy transitions were observed. In HPs, transitions relied on …
