Spectral graph theory is a subfield of algebraic graph theory that studies the matrices associated with graphs. It lives at the nexus of Linear Algebra and Combinatorics. Many intriguing results in the domains of Matrix Theory and Combinatorics have come from studying the eigenvalues of graph matrices; in fact, several open problems in both areas have been resolved. Beyond its theoretical appeal, spectral graph theory has found meaningful applications in theoretical chemistry, particularly in the mathematical classification of chemical graphs. What does it mean to adopt a holistic approach to criminal justice? This symposium treats that question as a foundational inquiry into the theory, practice, and institutional architecture of criminal law. At a time of eroding public trust, a broad recognition that mass incarceration both reflects and entrenches structural inequality, growing pressure on legal actors to account for the human costs of their decisions, and anxiety about the rule of law, revisiting the normative commitments of criminal law feels like an urgent task.

Police violence against disabled people is a  fundamental problem of policing. Whether through so called wellness checks, quality of life policing, or coercive state civil commitment procedures, disabled people are often on the receiving end of intrusion, violence, and rights violations by law enforcement. Yet, so, too, is everyone else. That disabled people are similarly, and yet uniquely, vulnerable to intrusion, violence, and rights violations by law enforcement might seem like just another group to add to the list of groups harmed by policing and police violence. In recent years, several animal rights activists faced criminal charges for rescuing animals from factory farms. The standard legal approach in these cases has been relying on the necessity defense, which has a long history in cases of civil disobedience and ideologically driven crime. Animal law scholarship on this topic tends to focus on explaining why the defense applies to open rescue. However, as recent trials have demonstrated, actual courtrooms in rural counties tend to be hostile to the necessity defense, and judges can and do rely on Supreme Court precedent to keep it out of the courtroom.

This study examines how success is defined at the Red Hook Community Justice Center in Brooklyn, NYC, through a participatory, community centered lens. Moving beyond standard metrics, it articulates a locally grounded vision of success centered on empowerment, support, systemic accountability, and community trust. Drawing on the Everyday Peace Indicators approach, we convened nine focus groups and two public voting sessions with neighborhood residents, justice professionals, youth, former defendants, and family members. Participants generated and ranked 72 indicators, which we thematically clustered into six key categories reflecting the diverse contexts in which participants perceived the Center's impact: (1) rehabilitation and …

This Article focuses on recent developments in Britain in which courts have recognised gender deception as a sexual assault by using an autonomy based argument to define deception/fraud that vitiates consent in sexual offences. This Article argues against the defensibility of a framework that criminalizes deception on the basis of an ill defined autonomist based understanding as opposed to a more restrictive standard. It is a great irony of our criminal system that the enforcement of our criminal laws has long had aspects of lawlessness. Although criminal statutes define impermissible conduct by members of the public, they generally offer little guidance for state actors enforcing them.' Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare, inherited monogenic disorder that is typically caused by variants in the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (ALPL) gene. Genetic testing for ALPL variant(s) to confirm the diagnosis in patients with suspected HPP is a standard practice based on availability. Reinforced concrete (RC) columns exposed to aggressive environments are highly susceptible to corrosion-induced deterioration, resulting in significant reductions in load-carrying capacity. This research investigates the structural performance of RC circular short columns with varying levels of corrosion damage and evaluates the effectiveness of two composite-based repair techniques, namely carbon fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (C-FRCM) and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (C-FRP) composites, combined with concrete cover replacement. The study aims to establish these methods as practical solutions for rehabilitating corrosion-damaged columns under concentric and eccentric loading conditions. The study involved 44 Emirati higher education students enrolled in an English Communications Program divided into a control group using traditional methods, and an experimental group using VR tools for communicative activities. Data collection employed mixed-methods research through questionnaire surveys involving college students and interviews with EFL instructors over a ten-week period. This paper explores how exporting firms make production and allocation decisions when confronted with uninsurable background risks – such as abrupt policy shifts, logistical disruptions, and unforeseen compliance costs – that compound traditional exchange rate risks in global trade. Using a mean-variance (MV) utility framework, we model a representative firm’s optimal export behavior under jointly distributed risks and derive comparative static results that elucidate how changes in the magnitude and dependence structure of background risks affect export intensity. This study empirically investigates two main hypotheses: (1) the higher the level of economic freedom, the greater the demand for Moody’s Baa-rated corporate bonds, and, consequently, the higher the price of and the lower the real interest rate yield on those bonds; and (2) a higher national debt-to-GDP ratio level elevates perceived default risk and thereby reduces the private sector demand for Moody’s Baa-rated corporate bonds, with the results then being lower-prices on such bonds and hence a higher ex post real interest rate yield on them. In this article we explore ways of approaching what educators and researchers perceive as mistakes that are consistent with views of mathematics that tolerate ambiguity, contradiction, and multiple possible truths. The approaches we describe draw on works within and beyond the field of mathematics education and detail theories from biologist Humberto Maturana, community organizers Bob Moses and Ella Baker, and poet-philosopher Edouard Glissant. These alternative theoretical perspectives are distinctly relational in their approach. Louisiana recently enacted a law requiring a Ten Commandments display in every public school classroom from kindergarten to college. Forty-five years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a nearly identical attempt to introduce Christianity into the public schools violated the Establishment Clause—the clause in the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment that requires some degree of separation between church and state.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Supreme Court has since reduced the Establishment Clause to a shadow of its former self. It replaced doctrinal tests that protected religious minorities with a history and tradition test that is easily manipulated and that presumes the …

Objectives: To describe the utilization of the My Visit application for video calls between patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) and their families during the .COVID-19 pandemic as an alternative to hospital visits. Methods: The My Visit (Zeyareti) application was launched in 2 National Guard Health Affairs hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 and extended to all ICUs in August 2020. Director of Public Prosecutions v Durham (also called Bouye), decd and others [2024] UKPC 21; [2024] 1 W.L.R. 3900 involved an application for judicial review of a decision to prosecute. The Privy Council rightly refused that application on the ground that the evidence did not disclose a ground for judicial review, and the criminal trial would be the more appropriate forum to investigate any further evidence. Unfortunately, the Privy Council missed several opportunities to address various lingering problems with the law on judicial review of prosecutorial decisions.

It is tempting to treat the United States’ ill-fated military intervention in Vietnam in the 1960s as the desperate final gasp of a moribund Western imperial system. Certainly, scholars have described Washington’s military debacle in Vietnam as the end of America’s “short-lived empire” in Southeast Asia, emblematic of the broader, decisive triumph of Southeast Asian nationalism over western colonialism. This reading of Southeast Asian countries attaining formal independence after 1945, with tacit assumptions that colonialism and nationalism exist in binary opposition, tends to ossify when the region’s history is viewed through the lens of U.S. defeat in Vietnam.
