Parental history of childhood neglect is a risk factor for offspring neglect. When a parent and their offspring both experience neglect in childhood, the phenomenon is referred to as the intergenerational continuity of child neglect. Understanding how child neglect is continued from one generation to the next is essential for creating effective interventions and prevention strategies that may help break the cycle. Polities and media external to Haiti direct a lot of narrative focus on the country being the source of its own protracted crises. This represents a powerful narrative hegemony that casts the post-colonial nation as a zone of perpetual disasters or crisis. To maintain that narrative domination over Haiti, opportunistic observers of Haiti’s media spectacles of crisis only need to atomize the country’s newest crisis or natural disaster from the history that situates it. A new form of “autocratic legalism” (Scheppele) that relies on law rather than guns raises a serious challenge to democratic constitutionalism. While authors tend to focus on the “illiberal” challenge, this article is concerned with its jurisprudential dimension: what exactly is wrong with autocratic legalism? That is, to what extent does legalism, understood as the formalistic and one-sided instrumentalization of law, represent a hollowed-out, defective, and potentially harmful theory of law? The RBDC is an independent statutory authority of the Government of Western Australia (WA), established under the Rural Business Development Corporation Act 2000 (Act). The Act preserved and continued the body corporate established by the Rural Adjustment and Finance Corporation Act 1993.

Background: Equitable access to health care is heavily affected by socioeconomic factors. However, the effects of such disparities in accessing life-saving treatments remain incompletely characterized. Here we explore the impact of disparities on access to endovascular treatments for large vessel occlusion acute ischemic stroke.

Methods: From our prospectively maintained multihospital registry, we identified patients with large vessel occlusion acute ischemic stroke from January 2019-June 2020. Patient addresses and zip codes were matched to census-tract level area deprivation index (ADI) scores that were obtained from Neighborhood Atlas. Fire smoke exposure has become a global health concern and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. There is a lack of understanding of the specific immune mechanisms involved in smoke exposure with preventative and targeted interventions needed. After exposure to fire smoke, which includes PM2.5, toxic metals and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), epidemiology-based studies demonstrate increases in respiratory (e.g. asthma exacerbations), cardiac (e.g. myocardial infarctions, arrhythmias), neurologic (e.g. stroke) and pregnancy-related (e.g. low birthweight, premature births) outcomes. Background: Frequency of use - the number of days of use - is the most common metric for quantifying cocaine use and the most common target of treatment. However, frequency may not capture all important aspects of cocaine use. This study examined how other aspects of cocaine use (typical amount spent, variability etc.) relate to life functioning and cocaine use disorder (CUD) treatment outcomes.

Method: This is a secondary analysis of 3 clinical trials for CUD, N = 207 for the life functioning analysis and N = 173 for the outcomes analysis. Eight metrics of use were calculated from baseline …

Volumetric bone density, microarchitecture, and strength measures using HR-pQCT are valuable measures of bone health in pediatrics. Our cross-sectional study evaluated bone measure reproducibility in pediatric participants using repeat HR-pQCT (XtremeCT II, Scanco Medical) scans of non-dominant distal tibia and radius of 30 healthy children and adolescents (7-17 yr, 47% female) by 2 technicians. Additionally, we examined HR-pQCT and micro-CT of 26 cadaveric distal tibia specimens to evaluate agreement between the modalities. All HR-pQCT scans were analyzed using manufacturer-provided software (Image Processing Language, Scanco Medical) and a fully automated, previously validated, in-house algorithm, offering measures of bone microstructure (eg, trabecular …

DNA methylation is a critical epigenetic mechanism in numerous biological processes, including gene regulation, development, ageing and the onset of various diseases such as cancer. Studies of methylation are increasingly using single-molecule long-read sequencing technologies to simultaneously measure epigenetic states such as DNA methylation with genomic variation. These long-read data sets have spurred the continuous development of advanced computational methods to gain insights into the roles of methylation in regulating chromatin structure and gene regulation. Current models of motor control emphasize the critical role of sensory feedback, as demonstrated by movement coordination deficits following sensory impairment. When both vision and touch are available for object-oriented manual behaviors, they serve distinct roles; vision guides the execution of planned movements, while touch provides more direct feedback on hand-object interactions. The impact of losing somatosensory feedback on eye-hand coordination during dexterous object manipulation tasks has not been thoroughly studied. Conceivably, vision is recruited to compensate for the feedback lost when touch is abolished based on the dexterity demands of the behavior. To investigate this, we tested healthy participants …

The landscape of genetic ataxias is influenced by migration, population genetics, consanguinity, and founder effects, resulting in significant regional variation. Within the expanding domain of genetic ataxias, knowledge of regional epidemiology is scarce, particularly outside of North America and Europe. Understanding the epidemiology of genetic ataxias, together with deep phenotyping and knowledge of the appropriate ancillary studies, is crucial for the development and deployment of diagnostic testing strategies. This review offers a comprehensive, data-driven overview of 2932 articles with regional epidemiological estimates and the occurrence and prevalence of 548 genes associated with ataxia across 122 countries. Understanding the complex factors influencing mammalian metabolism and body weight homeostasis is a long-standing challenge requiring knowledge of energy intake, absorption and expenditure. Using measurements of respiratory gas exchange, indirect calorimetry can provide non-invasive estimates of whole-body energy expenditure. However, inconsistent measurement units and flawed data normalization methods have slowed progress in this field. This guide aims to establish consensus standards to unify indirect calorimetry experiments and their analysis for more consistent, meaningful and reproducible results. By establishing community-driven standards, we hope to facilitate data comparison across research datasets. This advance will allow the creation of an in-depth, machine-readable data …

This study seeks to identify an environmentally sustainable method for utilizing the synergetic effects of window glass (WG), ceramic powder (CP), and ultrafine cerium oxide (UFC) in developing concrete containing 25% coarse ceramic aggregate. Four different mixtures were formulated. The first represents control, consisting of 100% ordinary Portland cement (OPC), two other mixtures were composed of 10% WG, 10% CP and 80% OPC, and the fourth mixture consisted of four compositions of 79.5% OPC, 10% WG, 10% CP, and 0.5% UFC.
