The Dark Side Of Ceo Inside Debt: Evidence From Stock Price Crash Risk, Amir Gholami, Ahmed M. Elnahas

Despite being thought of as a governance mechanism, CEO inside debt seems to distort firms' information environment. Our results indicate that CEO inside debt alters managerial orientation and incentives in a way that increases stock price crash risk. Our results are robust after addressing endogeneity using the instrumental variable (IV) approach, a difference-in-differences test based on the implementation of Internal Revenue Code Section 409 A Final Regulations, and Oster's omitted variable diagnostic test, and selection bias using the propensity score matching (PSM) and Entropy balancing (EB) approaches. Can the federal government insist that people use contraceptives? It may come as a surprise to learn that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has done just that as a condition for allowing access to some pharmaceutical products that create a serious risk of birth defects. Over the last few decades, the agency has demanded that patients using certain teratogenic agents—now numbering over a dozen drugs prescribed for a variety of conditions, ranging from severe acne and psoriasis to multiple myeloma and pulmonary hypertension—agree to avoid becoming pregnant, sometimes for years after completing their course of treatment. With the growing fears of a large-scale combat operation against a near-peer adversary, the United States may confront a need to fully mobilize its military for the first time since World War II. A full-scale mobilization would likely necessitate the return of conscription (a.k.a. the draft). The Selective Service System (“SSS”) is currently the federal agency that oversees and conducts the draft in accordance with the provisions of the Military Selective Service Act (“Act”). This publication is by INSS Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs Senior Research Fellow Dr. Joel Wuthnow. The monograph uses internal PLA writings to examine recent Chinese thinking on countering U.S. intervention in Asia, and finds that PLA experts emphasize efforts to leverage nuclear, conventional, and informational (space, cyber, and cognitive warfare) tools to deter U.S. intervention, but also advocate preparing for asymmetric attacks against key targets in the U.S. military system in case the United States intervenes anyway.

The quality of tours is significantly influenced by tour guides’ communication skills, regional knowledge, and storytelling abilities. Guide effectiveness depends on factors such as training, skill development, and professionalism in guest care. Given their pivotal role in shaping tour quality and experiences, the literature consistently highlights these effects. The present study aims to make a comprehensive contribution to the existing knowledge in the field by analyzing the academic literature on the performance of tour guides using bibliometric methods. Analysis reveals that the most cited publications on tour guide performance are found in tourism and management journals, such as Tourism Management. …

This Article proposes and defends a new theoretical model of constitutional rights. Virtually all the prevailing theories about constitutional rights envision, at some level, judges balancing the importance of various individual rights against the importance of other societal goods in tension with those rights. These theories also generally hold out the judiciary as the primary guardian of these rights, whereas the other political branches are often viewed as fulfilling a role of interfering with (or protecting) rights only as much as the judiciary will allow. We live in a republic of amended statutes. In each Congress, our laws are amended tens of thousands of times. Individual statutes make amendments that number in the thousands. As a result, the amended statute has become the central democratic text of our age—a remarkable development for a type of document unknown at the Founding. Yet the amended statute has been relegated to an after-thought in legal theory. This is incredible neglect for an essential source of modern law—one that anchors innumerable rights in U.S. society.

Price adjustment clauses (PACs) are used by state departments of transportation (DOTs) to share the risk of material price fluctuations. Existing models that depict the price fluctuations of materials forecast a mean within a horizon while relying on the assumption of a constant volatility throughout that horizon. However, none of them examine whether the prices of construction material exhibit similar volatility following a sudden price surge or a price drop. The prospect of PACs and their associated trigger values is hindered in the absence of empirical assessments of their capacity to capture the volatilities in material prices. This paper fills …

Financial crises have occurred around the world for over two centuries. These crises have been so costly and frequent that one wonders why governments cannot prevent them from recurring despite repeated, wide-ranging attempts at legislation, regulation, supervision, and enforcement.

In this article, we argue that lawmakers repeatedly act in two ways that may appear to be intuitive but are actually detrimental to system-wide stability. First, lawmakers fail to understand that “banks”—both traditional banks and shadow banks—produce runnable short-term debt, unlike other firms in the economy. Since Dobbs, advocacy for reproductive justice in the United States has increasingly focused on the “virtuous victims” of state abortion bans—women who wanted to give birth but suddenly required emergency abortion care to preserve their lives or health. These cases now play a prominent role in strategic litigation but may inadvertently promote stereotypical views of women’s role in society. The political fallout may also lead Republicans to propose compromise legislation, with a wider range of compassionate exceptions but increased restrictions on abortion pills. This could have devastating impacts on women who are currently obtaining abortion pills for self-managed abortions. The …
