Governance, Culture, And Law: The Expanding Scope Of Environmental Science And Sustainable Development Research, Ahyaudin Sodri, Herdis Herdiansyah
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Environmental science emerged as a discipline based on physical measurements, such as soil pollutant levels (Ailijiang et al., 2022), ecological restoration (Yue et al., 2026), city surface temperature (Shafizadeh-Moghadam et al., 2025), and microbial density in air samples (Hayleeyesus & Manaye, 2014). However, its objects of study increasingly extend beyond the confines of the laboratory. Questions that were once sufficiently answered with measurement data now require answers through draft laws, Constitutional Court decisions, financial reports of mining companies, and even traditional ritual discourses governing community access to forests. In other words, environmental …
Maleficia's Magic: Witchcraft, Race, And The Legacy Of Afro-Mexican Women And Identity In Colonial New Spain, Siobhan K. Arechavala
Maleficia's Magic: Witchcraft, Race, And The Legacy Of Afro-Mexican Women And Identity In Colonial New Spain, Siobhan K. Arechavala
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the disproportionate prosecution of mulatta and Black women by the Mexican Inquisition in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and argues that this pattern was not incidental to Spanish colonialism but central to it. Drawing primarily on inquisitorial trial records from the Huntington Library’s Mexican Inquisition Papers and the Archivo General de la Nación’s Ramo Inquisición, alongside period treatises and secondary scholarship on witchcraft, caste, and Afro-Mexican history, the study traces how limpieza de sangre, Christian demonology, and colonial racial hierarchy combined to position African-descended women as embodiments of the disorder colonial elites feared most. The first chapter …
How Localized Physical Processes Influence Large-Scale Phytoplankton Blooms Near The Sea Ice Edge In The Greenland Sea, Abigail P. Heiser, Till J.W. Wagner, Manfredi Manizza, Dustin Carroll, Conner W. Lester, Dimitris Menemenlis

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The Arctic Ocean has experienced intensifying phytoplankton spring blooms near the sea ice edge. Here, we investigate the drivers of such near-ice blooms in the Greenland Sea by comparing satellite and in situ observations with the ECCO-Darwin physical–biogeochemical state estimate. Satellite data reveal pronounced spring blooms within ~ 200 km of the ice, a signal that is not reproduced in ECCO-Darwin. Observations further reveal that primary production is tightly linked to submesoscale meltwater eddies shed from the ice edge, which are not currently resolved by ECCO-Darwin. We argue that the relatively coarse spatial resolution, together with biases in sea ice …
Rethinking The Legal Status Quo In Cyberspace To Legally Attribute State Responsibility, And Enhance Accountability And Deterrence, Dan Efrony
International Law Studies
The absence of formal legal attributions of State responsibility for malicious cyber operations reflects a strategic choice by influential States—foremost the United States and the United Kingdom—rather than doctrinal certainty. So long as States avoid creating legal rules for attribution, they entrench cyberspace as a legal gray zone and expose the limits of collective attribution as a governance mechanism. This article identifies probative and institutional impediments in the secondary rules of attribution: the effective control test is difficult to satisfy for proxy cyber operations, the lack of an authoritative standard of proof enables plausible deniability, and, absent consent, States remain …

Through The Arena: A Marxist Strategic-Relational Perspective On East Asian Regional Trade Architecture, John H. Limaldi
Through The Arena: A Marxist Strategic-Relational Perspective On East Asian Regional Trade Architecture, John H. Limaldi
Journal of Critical Global Issues
This paper critically assesses the dominant regional trade architecture that impacts East Asia, focusing on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and its U.S.-bastardized version, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Using a strategic-relational approach grounded in Marxist theory, the paper examines how these agreements impact the relationship between the Capitalist State and Capital. It argues that international economic architecture in the neoliberal era produces state effects that weaken national sovereignty to the benefit of capital and the detriment of labor. The paper concludes with recommendations for a new regional trade architecture that prioritizes labor rights, democratic accountability, and …

Modeling Of Air-Water Filled Rubber Dam Under Hydrostatic Conditions, Qusay Khaleel, Thair Khayyun, Khudhayer Abdullah
Engineering and Technology Journal
Inflatable dams, also called rubber dams, are flexible cylindrical inflatable and deflatable structures attached to a rigid base; these dams are basically cylindrical tubes made of rubberized material and inflated by air, water, or a combination of the two. In this paper, the air/water inflatable dam was studied and analyzed numerically using ANSYS software. The 3-parameter Mooney-Rivlin Model was used to model the rubber material of the dam. At first, a physical model from literature was used to calibrate the results of the ANSYS software, and then a new model was analyzed with different dimensions and conditions. Thirty-six simulations were …

Comparison Between Theoretical And Experimental Behavior Of Shallow Foundation In Cohesive Soil, Baraa Al-Dawoodi, Mohaned Waheed, Falah Rahil
Engineering and Technology Journal
This paper discusses a finite element analysis of shallow footing subjected to axial loading rested on different types of cohesive soil by using a computer program called PLAXIS-3D (V.20) software. The behavior of cohesive soil is simulated using several constitutive models (Mohr-Coulomb model, Hardening soil model, and Hardening soil with small strain stiffness model in order to find the best match between theoretical and experimental results). Two cases are considered square and rectangle. Moreover, some parameters that affect the load settlement relation curve; such as internal friction angle and soil modulus elasticity were investigated. It was found that the simulation by …

The increase in the number of traffic accidents, deaths, and injuries is a major concern for traffic and safety professionals. Distraction from the road is common, but increases safety concerns. Drivers engage in many behaviors that are a distraction from the task of driving, and these sources may be inside or outside the vehicle. The driver may not have a clear idea of the negative impact of such activities on achieving safe driving. The paper focused on one type of distraction that occurs inside the car, the factor of eating while driving in order to address the question of whether …

Effect Of Dynamic Earth Vibration On The Behavior Of Laterally Loaded Single Pile Embedded Within Unsaturated Soil, Maha Abood, Mahmood Mahmood, Nahla Salim
Engineering and Technology Journal
Most of the studies of laterally loaded piles focused on the behavior for piles subjected to static or cyclic lateral loading embedded within dry or saturated soils, few studies investigate the behavior of piles embedded within partially saturated soils and subjected to dynamic loads. In this research, an experimental study presents an aluminum pile model embedded within dry, fully saturated and partially saturated soils, subjected to dynamic load with the El Centro 1940 NS acceleration data (0.05g, 0.15g, and 0.32g) accelerations. Three different lowering levels of the water table for fully saturated soils model is achieved to get partially saturated …

In this work, a hydrothermal technique is employed to prepare titanium dioxide films on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates. A low-cost homemade autoclave was used to fabricate iron-doped -TiO2 films (1at. %Fe) at different reaction times from 1 to 4 hours. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that the predominant phase is rutile (R-TiO2) with peaks at (101), (002), and (112). The XRD results showed that with increasing reaction time the peaks become sharper and narrowed. The images of the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) showed that with increasing reaction time the films appeared to have vertically aligned TiO2 nanorods. …
