This study critically examines discourse and the ways it shapes identities and community belonging for self-identifying Afro-Latina, second-generation-immigrant women in South Florida. This qualitative research uses an intercultural communication framework to analyze interviews and collected poems. Informed by grounded theory and a Black feminist critical approach rooted in the intersectionality theory, the data is analyzed through comparative thematic and metaphorical rhetorical analyses. When discussing the discourses related to the development of ethno-racial identities for Afro-Latinas, certain communicative patterns of self-discovering, self-defining, and self-envisioning emerged. With regard to community belonging, three metaphorical discourses arose: not-enoughness, in-betweenness, and un-humanness. The internalization of …

A persistent ``reasonableness divide'' exists between the legal standards governing police use of force and the public’s expectations, producing ``lawful but awful'' uses of force. This study empirically tests the ``Community Expectations Standard'' (CES), a model that identifies five criteria the public uses to evaluate force: underlying governmental interest, avoidability, officer motivation, subject resistance, and the presence of a ``highly dangerous'' environment. Using a factorial survey experiment with a national sample of nearly 2,000 U.S. adults, we analyzed responses to a hypothetical vignette depicting non-lethal force using t-tests and Bayesian linear regression models. Language Proficiency In Translation And Interpreting Programs: Insights From Administrators And Instructors, Julio Ciller, Sonia Colina

This article examines the relationship between language proficiency and translation and interpreting (T&I) education in U.S. programs, focusing on language preparedness and development. This mixed-methods study investigates course prerequisites, proficiency requirements, and perceptions of administrators and instructors regarding students’ expected versus observed proficiency levels. Findings reveal a mismatch between expected and average proficiency when entering a program, with both groups acknowledging that T&I courses contribute to students’ language development but noting that current program practices often fail to align students’ actual proficiency with their needs. Quality Improvement Project Assessment Of Emergency Department Staff Knowledge On Use Of Emergency Severity Index In A Critical Access Hospital: Implementation Of Emergency Department-Based Education Program., Amanda Taylor

In rural emergency departments, accurate triage is vital to ensuring patient safety and maximizing limited resources. This quality improvement project aimed to strengthen triage practices by enhancing nurses’ understanding and confidence in using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI), a standardized tool for assessing patient acuity. Ten registered nurses at a seven-bed critical access hospital participated in a structured educational program, guided by Lewin’s Change Theory and Benner’s Novice to Expert Theory. The intervention included hands-on training, real-world scenarios, and self-assessment surveys. After the program, nurses showed significant gains in both knowledge (mean scores rose from 70.0 to 88.9, p < .001) and confidence (from 13.5 to 23.2 out of 25). While the small sample size and short timeline were limitations, the results highlight the value of ongoing education in improving triage accuracy and patient care. This project offers a practical model for rural hospitals seeking to enhance emergency nursing practice and promote consistent, evidence-based decision-making.

Water heritage plays a pivotal role in establishing Greater Nanning as a central city in the upper Pearl River basin of southern China. However, this heritage has largely been overlooked due to an urban narrative dominated by land-centrism. This article explores methods to create a comprehensive understanding of the water heritage of Greater Nanning and discusses how it can be integrated into the concept of urban authenticity. It argues that both tangible and intangible water heritages are essential elements to safeguard urban authenticity and promote sustainable cultural development. Details of the Late Jurassic tectonic evolution of the North American continental margin remain controversial, but a clear understanding of Late Jurassic tectonics is essential for understanding subsequent terrane accretion and displacement. Upper Jurassic strata of the Galice Formation in the western Klamath Mountains province and the Mariposa Formation in the Western Sierra Nevada metamorphic province were deposited along the margin of North America during this critical time. The Galice and Mariposa Formations have long been correlated, and these strata are the youngest rocks deformed during Late Jurassic Nevadan deformation in Oregon and California. Effective communication of mechanical designs through technical drawings requires geometric accuracy, efficiency, and an understanding of human perception and cognition. Although advances in computer-aided design (CAD) software have improved drawing precision and automation, current tools often overlook the spatial reasoning processes that users employ to interpret these representations. Calcified coronary lesions remain a challenge in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in both situations of acute myocardial infarction (MI) and stable coronary syndrome. It significantly increases the risk of procedural complications due to difficulty in equipment delivery, balloon expansion, and stent delivery. Furthermore, stent thrombosis, dissection, perforation, and future in-stent restenosis occur more frequently in calcified coronary lesions, impacting repeat target vessel revascularization and increasing the risk of future MI. With intracoronary imaging (intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography), peri-procedural success for treating calcified lesions has increased significantly. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia in elderly individuals worldwide; however, all mechanisms leading to disease onset and progression are not well understood. Here, we report brain single-cell multiome and spatial transcriptomics in a transgenic rat model of human-like tauopathy. We have identified new markers of tau-driven AD pathology and provided single-cell evidence for genes implicated in AD. Our findings reveal how tau hyperphosphorylation and aging alter ligand-receptor communication, transcription factor regulatory networks, and specific cellular networks. Notably, we found intriguing changes in cell communication involving glutamatergic transmission and Netrin signaling as a taupathy consequence. Overall, this …

B lymphocytes play major adaptive immune roles, producing antibodies and driving T cell responses. However, how immunometabolism networks support B cell activation and differentiation in response to distinct receptor stimuli remains incompletely understood. To gain insights, we systematically investigated acute primary human B cell transcriptional, translational, and metabolomic responses to B cell receptor (BCR), TLR9, CD40-ligand (CD40L), IL-4, or combinations thereof. Polypyrimidine tract-binding protein 1 (PTBP1) is a heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein primarily known for its alternative splicing activity. It shuttles between the nucleus and cytoplasm via partially overlapping N-terminal nuclear localization (NLS) and export (NES) signals. Despite its fundamental role in cell growth and differentiation, its involvement in human disease remains poorly understood. We identified 27 individuals from 25 families harboring de novo or inherited pathogenic variants - predominantly start-loss (89%) and, to a lesser extent, missense (11%) - affecting NES/NLS motifs. Affected individuals presented with a syndromic neurodevelopmental disorder and variable skeletal dysplasia with disproportionate short stature with short limbs. …

Objectives: Incidental detection of superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) in patients without symptoms may lead to misinterpretation if not correlated with clinical presentation, examination findings, and vestibular function testing. This study aimed to assess the rate of radiological SSCD in the asymptomatic Omani population, as the first study of its kind in the country and the Gulf region. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of all asymptomatic patients who underwent high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the temporal bones at a tertiary care facility between 2017 and 2021.
