Etiology And Outcomes Of Upper Extremity Venous Thrombosis: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Selçuk Coşkun, Pinar Köksal Coşkun, Ferhat İçme, Mehmet Ali̇ Ceyhan

Background/aim: Upper extremity venous thrombosis (UEVT), encompassing upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) and superficial vein thrombosis (UESVT), is increasingly recognized due to invasive procedures and advanced diagnostics. This study characterizes the 5-year outcomes and etiological factors of UEVT in a large cohort.

Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 304 consecutive adult patients with acute UEVT (2019–2025) at a tertiary care center in Türkiye. Demographics, medical history, thrombosis characteristics, treatments, and outcomes—including thrombosis resolution, pulmonary embolism, and mortality—were analyzed. Statistical analyses were performed using chi-square tests, multivariate logistic regression, and random forest models.

Background/aim: Meningeal lymphatic vessels (mLVs) facilitate the clearance of toxic metabolites like amyloid-beta (Aβ) from the central nervous system. Dysfunction in MLVs is implicated in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, current knowledge relies on exogenous intervention models that fail to capture spontaneous mLV decline during AD progression. In this study, we investigated the age-dependent correlation between mLV/deep cervical lymph node (dCLN) dysfunction and Aβ pathology in APP/PS1 mice under noninterventional conditions.

Background/aim: Moltkia coerulea, a medicinal plant traditionally used for its neuroprotective properties, contains diverse phenolic compounds. However, its mechanisms of action in neuroinflammation remain unclear. We hypothesized that extracts of M. coerulea may protect microglial cells from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis by modulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and caspase-3 activity.

Materials and methods: Aqueous and methanol extracts (5–50 μg/mL) were tested in BV-2 microglial cells. Neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets account for over 60% of global magnet sales and are widely used in high-tech, military, and clean-energy applications (Ormerod, 2022). However, they contain critical rare earth elements such as Nd, Pr, and Dy which poses supply chain and geopolitical risks for country like the United States, which rely extensively on foreign sources. The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS) identifies acquired capability as a key factor contributing to suicidal behavior. Previous research has shown that violent media exposure can increase suicidal risk through desensitization, imitation, and trauma activation. However, little is known about the role of true crime consumption (TCC), a popular form of violent media engagement, in relation to IPTS constructs. This study examined whether TCC predicts acquired capability for suicide, perceived burdensomeness, and thwarted belongingness. A total of 215 participants were retained after data cleaning. The first section explores fractional-order generalized Chebyshev wavelets (FOCW) applied to fractional advection equations, relevant in both mathematics and physics. We evaluated small area estimation (SAE) methods for county-level forest biomass across four Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) regions in the contiguous United States using the coefficient of variation and relative root mean squared error. The Standard Fay–Herriot (FH) model was compared with multivariate, spatial, and measurement-error extensions, while the unit-level Battese–Harter–Fuller (BHF) model was compared with mixed-effects random forests (MERF) with auxiliary data from remote sensing. Spatial FH improved precision when spatial dependence was strong; otherwise, Standard FH was more reliable. All FH models were effective with fewer than 100 plots. While tangible flows obey conservation laws and physical constraints, replicable flows, like rumors or viruses, can grow, decay, or vanish unpredictably. Despite their increasing interaction in real-world settings, these flow types are typically modeled in isolation, using disconnected mathematical frameworks. Throughout the summer of 2020 and into the following fall, a cross-unit working group at the University of Oklahoma Libraries (OU Libraries) collaborated to compile and submit a proposal to change the Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH) Tulsa Race Riot, Tulsa, Okla., 1921 to Tulsa Race Massacre, Tulsa, Okla., 1921. The working group members situated this project in the context of the metadata justice movement, which seeks to correct problematic descriptions. They also see this proposal as part of the broader work undertaken over many decades by Tulsa activists and community leaders. This successful proposal required working group …

Collaborative Librarianship

Archives West is a regional aggregation of descriptions of archival collections held by institutions in the Pacific Northwest and Mountain West. While many similar regional aggregations have struggled to reach sustainability, Archives West is one of a few that is fully funded by its participants, and continues to grow in both scale and scope. We hypothesize that there are unique cultural qualities of the Archives West community that have supported its growth, including a philosophy of empowering participants, transparent budget processes, clear statement of value to resource providers, and maintaining expectations that all institutions will contribute through service and fees.

In 2024, the Supreme Court decided the case of United States v. Rahimi. The Court, unpersuaded by Rahimi’s objection regarding federal law which prohibited an individual subject to a domestic violence restraining order from possessing a firearm, decided the restriction was constitutional. While the holding of this case represents a win for survivors of domestic violence, the legal reasoning plants itself of flimsy concepts of history. Rationale: Acute limb ischemia is a vascular emergency that occurs when blood flow to a limb suddenly decreases, putting the limb at risk if not treated promptly. Acute limb ischemia accounts for 11% of all vascular emergencies, among which arm ischemia is relatively rare. It is caused by occlusion of the brachial artery, most commonly by vascular thromboembolism. We report a female patient with left upper limb ischemia induced by occlusion of the brachial artery.

A Batson challenge is an objection to the use of peremptory challenges to dismiss potential jurors based on their race; however, Batson challenges are rarely successful. In this paper, we apply Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a framework to analyze the Batson Challenge. More specifically, we argue that the Batson challenge is a practice grounded in interest convergence that underscores the permanence of racism in the judicial system.
