Do Canadian citizens support their courts, and what factors influence that support? While it is well recognized that public confidence in the judicial branch is crucial for its effective functioning, how to measure and analyze this confidence is debated. This article explores how social scientists conceptualize and study trust and perceptions of legitimacy in courts. Using data from the Canada Election Studies spanning 2008 to 2021 and an original survey conducted in 2023, this article provides an overview of the current state of trust in Canadian courts, the known correlates of confidence, and recommendations for maintaining public support. This paper examines the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in Murray-Hall v. Quebéc (Attorney General), upholding Québec’s restrictions on personal cultivation and possession of cannabis despite federal legalization. This decision is contextualized within a broader empirical analysis of the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence on the criminal law power under section 91(27) of the Constitution Act, 1867. By systematically reviewing Supreme Court cases from the Margarine Reference to Murray-Hall, the authors identify two trends: (1) increasing judicial deference to provincial legislative jurisdiction in criminal law matters since the enactment of the Charter, and (2) a continued judicial willingness to limit federal jurisdiction …

R. v. Zacharias is a complex, and on one important issue inconclusive, decision about the extent of police powers and the balance between individual rights and societal interests. The case decided that the “reasonable grounds” justifying a warrantless arrest could not include any information which had been obtained unlawfully. This rule had been long-established with regard to search warrants but had been the subject of conflicting decisions in lower courts in the case of arrests. Under the Canada-United States Safe Third Country Agreement (“STCA”), Canadian immigration officials return refugee protection claimants arriving from the United States to have their claims determined in that country, and vice versa. This paper tries to tease out the equality rights arguments under section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms likely to be advanced in an ongoing constitutional challenge to the STCA and its implementing regulations. The paper briefly explores why equality rights challenges have often been given short shrift in cases involving “migration control”. The narrative introduces Laila, an anthropomorphized doll who functions as both witness and archive, embodying the memories and traumas of multiple child survivors. Through Laila’s journey across India, Pakistan, and the diaspora, the text explores themes of identity, belonging, loss, and intergenerational memory.

The Fourteenth Amendment’s Citizenship Clause has guaranteed birthright citizenship to all children born in the United States for hundreds of years. Yet, President Trump’s January 20, 2025, executive order threatens to strip that right from children born to parents unlawfully in the country and temporary visitors. This order, if permitted to stand, would change the definition of US citizenship and render countless children stateless persons without citizenship rights. This paper examines whether birthright citizenship in the US, properly understood, extends to children of unlawful immigrants and temporary visitors. This study examines how price-based and quantity-based monetary frameworks explain the policy actions of the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) within the context of a trade-dependent, small open economy. Utilizing a comparative empirical analysis of Taylor and McCallum rules from 2000 to 2025, the research finds that Taylor rule’s superior fit is contingent upon the inclusion of the augmented variables, such as federal funds rate, Financial Stress Index, and sovereign credit premiums, revealing a policy stance that is deeply reactive to international financial conditions. In contrast, the McCallum rule demonstrates remarkable parsimony, explaining 45% of the variance …

This report presents the design, development, and deployment of a teleoperated robotic arm system capable of vision-based imitation learning. The system uses a leader-follower architecture with myArm C650 and myArm M750 robots manufactured by Elephant Robotics. The leader arm movement is controlled by the operator, whereas the follower performs actions acquired from demonstrations. Data collection included synchronized joint-angle recording and multi- camera video streams capturing human demonstrations.

These demonstrations were processed with a deep learning imitation algorithm called Action Chunking with Transformers (ACT). The main capability of this algorithm is its ability to make future action predictions based solely on …

In this chapter I review government definitions of terrorism to show the popularity of assuming that terrorists aim to coerce governments and their citizens through fear. Then I draw out some of the costs of this assumption for analysts of terrorism, practitioners of counterterrorism, and targets of terrorist attacks. Including fear and coercion in definitions of terrorism blinds us to the importance of terrorist aims other than coercion, of emotions other than fear, and of audiences other than terrorist victims. In particular I argue that terrorists aim to elicit anger and overreaction that will advance their cause. Ignoring this strategy …

Music listening while working is prevalent in contemporary workplaces, with extensive research demonstrating its psychological and behavioral implications. Shifting focus from intra-individual outcomes, the present research examines the social implications of music listening at work. To do so, we adopt a novel third-party perspective to investigate how observers perceive and react to music listeners. Building on attribution theory, we argue that music listening is an ambiguous behavior that invites observers to make leisure or productivity attributions, thereby shaping how they perceive and treat music listeners. Research Summary: Research on inter-firm cooperation often focuses on long-term strategic alliances while overlooking the distinct form of arm's-length resource exchanges. Our study addresses this gap using the National Basketball Association (NBA) data for precise resource exchange measurements. Contrary to strategic alliances, where competitive pressure fosters cooperation, we find that competitive pressure reduces cooperation in arm's-length exchanges. However, relational capital helps to facilitate resource exchanges. We also found that while resource bundling exacerbates the negative effect of competitive pressure, it amplifies the positive effect of relational capital. Interestingly, relational rivalry intensifies the impact of competitive pressure but does not diminish …

The Brady doctrine requires prosecutors to disclose all favorable and material evidence to the defense. To effectuate that rule, the U.S. Supreme Court has defined materiality as a “reasonable probability” that the evidence would have affected the outcome at trial. But apart from that definition, the Court has resisted offering any further guidance to lower courts. While far too little is known about how Brady materiality claims are actually adjudicated, there is strong evidence that courts often reject Brady claims involving withheld evidence on the grounds that the evidence was not significant enough to be material.

Epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, is often driven by hyperexcitable neural circuits that result from an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory signaling. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and is essential for maintaining neuronal excitability. One mechanism through which GABA exerts inhibitory control is via δ-subunit–containing γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors (δ-GABAARs), which mediate tonic inhibition by providing steady background suppression of neuronal activity. δ-GABAARs are particularly enriched in the DG, where they help regulate the excitability of granule neurons and preserve the DG’s gating function. This study examines how digital payment trust and perceived cybersecurity influence Indian consumers’ intention to shop cross-border online through Reliance Retail’s AJIO. The research used a quantitative cross-sectional survey of 59 Indian adults with online shopping experience. Data were analysed in SPSS using descriptive statistics, reliability testing, Spearman’s rank correlation and supplementary linear regression. The data analysis showed that trust in digital payments was the most influential of all factors on cross border purchase intentions.
