Embedded Tense And The Problem Of Acquisition, Sam Alxatib, Spencer Caplan
Embedded Tense And The Problem Of Acquisition, Sam Alxatib, Spencer Caplan

What we hope to do is pose questions that, to our knowledge, have not received attention in the literature. The broad form of the question is all too familiar: how do speakers of a language—say, English—come to possess the grammatical knowledge that they demonstrate? The questions that guide this paper are narrow instances of this broad one, narrowed in three ways. First, they concern three particular languages: Japanese, English, and Russian. Second, they concern tenses specifically, and more specifically still, constructions containing embedded tenses. Third, they concern the semantics of tense. The learning challenge of interest to us is not …
Public Art’S Role In Urban Transformation In New York City: 5 Pointz And The High Line, Shelby Stanton
Public Art’S Role In Urban Transformation In New York City: 5 Pointz And The High Line, Shelby Stanton
Pomona Senior Theses
Urban spaces are made not only of buildings and infrastructure but of the social and cultural practices that integrates into social fabric and assigns their meaning. They are a living, transforming entity where humans and the environment influence each other in lifestyle and identity. In New York City, art, both formally commissioned public works and grassroots urban interventions, have become central to the processes of urban transformation. Murals, installations, and curated parks are crucial to the urban environment and are frequently leveraged as tools of placemaking. Place-making is a concept used to describe and understand how meaningful places emerge from …

Unified Bayesian And Machine Learning-Based State Of Charge Estimation In A Pv Battery System, Showrov Rahman
Unified Bayesian And Machine Learning-Based State Of Charge Estimation In A Pv Battery System, Showrov Rahman
Open Access Dissertations
The state of charge (SOC) of a battery indicates the remaining charge in the battery relative to its nominal maximum charge capacity. The accurate estimation of SOC is of utmost importance for efficient energy management as it indicates the level of energy stored in the battery.
Bayesian and machine learning (ML) approaches represent two distinct estimation strategies for battery state estimation. Bayesian filters, such as the Kalman filter (KF) and particle filter (PF), operate sequentially by incorporating physical models of battery dynamics. In contrast, ML-based methods are data-driven, and their performance largely depends on the quantity and quality of training …

Signs in public spaces can provide essential information. Especially at times of crises, and in places where there are large populations who speak a minoritized language, translation is often employed to create multilingual signage for the benefit of the community. After all, translated signs appear because some authority considers that a certain message is important enough to be visibly communicated to the public, including those who do not speak the State’s preferred language. The decision as to whether to translate or not certain signs may seem arbitrary, but one would hope that it is the result of a guided policy …
Interpreting Anti-Boycott Laws In The Shadow Of The First Amendment, Joseph A. Tomain
Interpreting Anti-Boycott Laws In The Shadow Of The First Amendment, Joseph A. Tomain
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
Thirty-eight states have enacted “anti-BDS” laws. These laws require people or entities doing business with the state to certify that they do not participate in the Boycott Divestment Sanction movement against Israel. Typically, these laws define boycott as a “refusal to deal, terminating business, or other actions” that limit commercial relations with Israel or Israeli entities. It is highly contested in the courts and commentary whether these anti-boycott laws violate the First Amendment. Assuming arguendo that the “refusal to deal” and “terminating business” clauses do not implicate the First Amendment, that leaves the residual clause. At least one court and …
Tiny Living Requires Big Solutions: How Florida's State And Local Laws Complicate Tiny House Living, Meghan Mcglone
Tiny Living Requires Big Solutions: How Florida's State And Local Laws Complicate Tiny House Living, Meghan Mcglone
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
Tiny houses entered the mainstream nearly a decade ago and are popular as an affordable, environmentally conscious, and traveler friendly housing option. However, local governments across the nation still have wildly different regulations governing tiny houses. Some jurisdictions have no rules at all, others define tiny houses by specific regulations, and others ban them outright. The differences between these rules across different jurisdictions are leaving tiny-home owners in the dark about their property rights.
This Note addresses the policy concerns and considerations surrounding tiny houses on foundations and tiny houses on wheels with local city and county laws. Through many …
Priming Students From Confucian-Heritage Culture For Success: Lessons From Music Pedagogy, Amanda Li
Priming Students From Confucian-Heritage Culture For Success: Lessons From Music Pedagogy, Amanda Li
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Concurrent Session Papers
Rising to more than 1.1 million in 2024, the number of international students in the United States continues to be a significant portion of the student population in higher education. Although no definitive number is readily available, anecdotal and my personal teaching experiences suggest that a sizable number of international students studying music in the United States are Chinese-native speakers from Confucian Heritage Cultures (CHC).
Much of the literature on Chinese international students is non-discipline specific, treating them as a homogenous whole. These students’ challenges and coping strategies are commonly categorized into language- and culture-related issues, which are inevitably intertwined. …
Student Conceptions Of Summation And Limits In The Definite Integral Following Quantitatively Focused Instruction, Caleb Daniel Holloway
Student Conceptions Of Summation And Limits In The Definite Integral Following Quantitatively Focused Instruction, Caleb Daniel Holloway
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Concurrent Session Papers
Recent studies have examined how students form productive conceptions of the definite integral and discussed techniques for promoting such conceptions. In this paper I present findings from interviews held with six students enrolled in second-semester calculus, four of whom had received quantitatively focused instruction on the definite integral. All six were chosen for their observed use of summation conceptions on definite integral problems, and here their conceptions are explored further. Additionally, we gain insight on their thinking regarding limits as related to the definite integral. The findings presented here add to our understanding of student thinking regarding the integral and …

Navigating Mercy: Ethical And Emotional Terrains In Carolingian Society And Politics, Wei-Ting Chen
Theses and Dissertations--History
This dissertation investigates mercy in the Carolingian period, especially its political dimensions. A sustained, holistic examination of mercy in the early medieval period remains lacking. This study examines mercy not only as a history of an idea but also as a history of emotion, tracing its transformation from the ancient Greek and Roman worlds through patristic literature and into Carolingian political discourse. This study argues that mercy played a central role in the construction of Christian kingship within Carolingian political discourse. Early Church Fathers reinterpreted mercy from a controversial concept in Roman Stoic philosophy into a positive virtue in Christian …
Federalist Foundations: A Critique Of The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, Joseph A. D'Angelo
Federalist Foundations: A Critique Of The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, Joseph A. D'Angelo
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) challenges the constitutional and federalist principles embedded in the Electoral College system. By attempting to bypass the traditional amendment process, the NPVIC risks destabilizing the carefully calibrated balance between state and national sovereignty that has guided presidential elections for centuries. Rooted in federalism, the Electoral College was designed to ensure equitable representation among states, giving smaller and less populous states a meaningful voice in the electoral process.
This Article critiques the NPVIC through a comprehensive examination of its constitutional, practical, and federalist implications. It analyzes the constitutional hurdles posed by the Electors Appointment …
Coming To America: How Consular Absolutism Leads To Discrimination, Justina Fakhry
Coming To America: How Consular Absolutism Leads To Discrimination, Justina Fakhry
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
This Note critiques a pervasive mode of discrimination that goes unchecked. Consular absolutism allows consular immigration officers to make discriminatory visa decisions, which are not subject to review. This Note begins with a discussion of the case law that developed the concept of consular absolutism, primarily by analyzing the Supreme Court’s gloss on the plenary power of the federal government in the realm of immigration. This Note then discusses how courts have built upon the plenary power doctrine to establish consular absolutism.
This Note suggests that Congress should amend the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) to grant a private right …

Techniques For Inclusive College Mathematics Classrooms, Christopher Anderson Davis, Josh Hiller, Anil Venkatesh
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Creating a welcoming and inclusive mathematics classroom is an important responsibility for all college mathematics faculty. But where do we begin? In this paper we present several techniques based on White’s (2024) building inclusive classrooms strategies framework, which the authors have found to be successful in making their own classrooms more inclusive. The techniques include the inclusion of contemporary diverse voices, exploring the history of applications of mathematical concepts, elevating the diverse intellectual history of mathematics, bringing diverse guest speakers into the classroom, and mentoring students as they engage in doing research. For each strategy we provide narrative comments based …
The Role Of Small Extracellular Vesicles In Modulating Radiation Resistance In H3k27m-Pediatric Diffuse Midline Glioma, Viral Oza
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
Pediatric diffuse midline gliomas with H3K27M alteration (H3K27M-pDMG) are the leading cause of pediatric brain tumor-associated deaths. All H3K27M-pDMG are initially treated with fractionated radiotherapy, the standard of care, and most children succumb to their disease within two years of diagnosis. There are no universally effective chemotherapies and full resection is impossible due to the diffuse nature of the tumor and sensitive location. There has not been a significant clinical advancement in more than 40 years.
Tumors become completely resistant to radiation within the first six months of treatment. The mechanism of radiation resistance is unknown but is thought to …

The Apathy Economy: Patents, Advertising, And Consumer Indifference, Gavin J. Milczarek-Desai, Derek E. Bambauer
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
Patents function as signals as well as rights to exclude. They inform competitors, investors, employees, and consumers about the invention and its owner. How this information affects consumers is not well understood. Existing studies disagree about how advertising a product or service as patented, or patent pending, affects the price consumers will pay. This Article offers the first major empirical study of that question andfinds that consumers behave with surprising rationality: they will not pay any price premium for a patented product. A product's patent status conveys little information about whether it is superior to competing offerings. The results hold …

Designing Contract Modification, Albert H. Choi, George G. Triantis

For long-term commercial contracts, modification tends to be the norm rather than the exception. While modification often takes place in response to an arrival of new information, contracting parties frequently modify the terms in response to a shift in bargaining power. In this Article, we explain how the flexibility to renegotiate in response to a shift in bargaining power can facilitate long-term contracting and thereby beneficial reliance investments and risk allocation. The prospect of modification can induce contracting parties who expect their bargaining power to improve, such as from the emergence of outside opportunities, to enter into contracts earlier and …

The Durability Of Protections Against Abuse At Interpol Amidst Rising Authoritarian Pressures, Kristina Daugirdas

Over centuries and across continents, authoritarian governments have demonstrated a large appetite for international cooperation to target political opponents across borders. In 1851, the “first modern police organization”—the Police Union of German States, whose members included Austria and Prussia—was established “with the express purpose of policing the political opposition of established autocratic regimes.” During the 1970s and early 1980s, military regimes in South America participated in a secret scheme known as Operation Condor to coordinate their efforts to suppress subversion. A recent analysis of twenty-nine “hard authoritarian” regional organizations found that twenty-five were engaged in police cooperation. The Shanghai Cooperation …

The One Big Beautiful Big Act (OBBBA) of 2025 is generally consideredto be a continuation of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017.1Thatis definitely true as far as the individual tax provisions are concerned, be-cause the OBBBA merely made permanent the TCJA provisions with minorchanges, such as increasing the cap on the state and local tax deduction from$10,000 to $40,000. For the corporate tax, the OBBBA continued some of thechanges in the TCJA (such as expensing) while relaxing others (such as amorti-zation of research and experimentation (R&E) expenditures and a stricter limiton interest deductions) without changing the overall …

Merger Remedies Unbound, Dhruv Aggarwal, Albert H. Choi, Geeyoung Min

How should foundational contract law doctrines apply to corporate mergers? This Article argues that recent changes in Delaware law grant parties expansive contractual freedom to define their preferred remedies in merger agreements, untethered from the limits imposed by traditional contract law. A new provision in the Delaware corporate code, or the Delaware General Corporation Law (DGCL), permits penalty clauses in merger agreements, notwithstanding the traditional “anti-penalty doctrine” that forbids punitive liquidated damages in contracts. Delaware courts have also shown deference to specific performance provisions, treating them as presumptively enforceable commitments instead of retaining their traditional judicial discretion over the choice …
Legalistic Noncompliance, Daniel Deacon, Leah Litman
Legalistic Noncompliance, Daniel Deacon, Leah Litman

Will the executive branch comply with court orders? That question has garnered a considerable amount of attention over the first few months of the second Trump administration. But what does it mean to comply? And what if a form of noncompliance is already occurring?
This Article documents an emerging practice that has dominated the second Trump administration's approach to unfavorable court rulings, a practice this Article calls legalistic noncompliance. Legalistic noncompliance occurs when the administration uses the language of the law as cover to claim that it is complying with court orders when in fact it is not. Drawing …

The harmful effects of climate change have already arrived in cities and states across America, with disasters increasing markedly in recent years along with more gradual environmental changes like sea-level rise and drought. To protect populations and natural resources, significant funding will be necessary for preventative measures as well as disaster response.
At present, it is states and ordinary taxpayers who must shoulder the enormous costs and planning for climate adaptation. A number of state legislators, however, have recently proposed enacting new laws that would require the companies who have most profited from fossil fuel usage to assist in funding …

Exploring The Potential Use Of Tead Inhibition As Part Of A Combination Therapy For Nf2-Deficient Schwannoma And Meningioma., Jamie Blake
Peninsula Medical School Theses
NF2-related Schwannomatosis is a genetic cancer predisposition syndrome, resulting in the development of schwannoma, meningioma and ependymoma tumours. Although surgical resection and adjuvant radiotherapy can be used, new avenues of therapeutic development are essential to target inoperable and recurrent tumours. Previous studies evaluating small molecule TEAD auto-palmitoylation inhibitors have distinguished their anti-proliferative effect in NF2-deficient cancers. Here we aim to identify compounds that could be utilised in conjunction with TEAD inhibition, to target aberrant Hippo signalling and secondary resistance mechanisms. We utilised immortalised and primary cells to evaluate the efficacy and potential synergism of TEAD inhibitors VT3989 and VT107 in …
