Shwachman–Diamond syndrome (SDS) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder, with approximately 90% of cases caused by pathogenic variants in the SBDS gene. This report describes a case of SDS diagnosed during the management of acute appendicitis. The patient, a male aged two years and 11 months, was admitted for emergency surgery for acute appendicitis. Subsequent evaluation revealed pancreatic exocrine dysfunction, pancreatic steatosis, abnormal liver function, and a history of recurrent diarrhea and neutropenia. Next-generation sequencing identified compound heterozygous SBDS variants: NM_016038.2:c.183_184TA>CT (p.Lys62*) and NM_016038.2:c.258+2T>C. Organizations in regulated or disconnected environments may face challenges in deploying high-performance generative models due to data residency or connectivity constraints, while local models can exhibit a performance gap for certain complex tasks. A hybrid architecture can augment a local student generative model using a dynamic distillation cache. This system can capture outputs, such as final answers, and underlying reasoning patterns from a remote teacher model. When a new query is received, the system can use semantic similarity to retrieve relevant cached reasoning and provide it as context to the local student model. Chromatin structure is a central regulator of gene expression and cellular identity, yet the chromatin structural factors driving cardiac disease and regeneration remain incompletely defined. This dissertation investigates how modulation of chromatin architecture shapes pathological and regenerative cardiac phenotypes through integrated single-cell transcriptomic, epigenomic, and functional analyses. To determine whether chromatin structural regulators distinguish healthy from diseased cardiac states, we curated a comprehensive list of chromatin structural genes and applied it to single-nuclei RNA sequencing datasets from human hearts with and without dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The genus Osyris L. comprises ecologically and economically important evergreen shrubs or small trees, with particular African species currently threatened by unsustainable exploitation. This study projected potential ecological niche shifts for Osyris under four Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) using digitized herbarium specimen localities and 20 environmental variables. The genus currently occupies a broad range between 41.32°N–34.85°S latitude and 9.27°W–109.03°E longitude, at elevations from 0 to 3900 m. High-suitability areas cluster primarily in the European-Mediterranean region, eastern/southern Africa, western South America, and Southeast Asia. When defendants are sentenced to death due to the nature of the crime, psychologists may be asked to participate in these cases, performing tasks such as conducting competency evaluations. Because the American Psychological Association (APA) Ethics Code states that psychologists cannot participate in activities that violate human rights, an ethical debate has emerged regarding whether they should participate in capital cases. The present study examined psychologists’ opinions on capital punishment and their interpretation of the APA Ethics Code, which does not specifically define what constitutes a violation of human rights. BACKGROUND: The current gold standard for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) is invasive angiography; however, it is an invasive procedure. Therefore, we developed an artificial intelligence model designed to predict significant CAD from a resting digital 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG).

OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study assessed the model's ability to predict clinically significant CAD in a patient population presenting for coronary angiography.

The binary black hole signal GW250114, the loudest gravitational wave detected to date, offers a unique opportunity to test Einstein’s general relativity (GR) in the high-velocity, strong-gravity regime and probe whether the remnant conforms to the Kerr metric. Upon perturbation, black holes emit a spectrum of damped sinusoids with specific, complex frequencies. Our analysis of the postmerger signal shows that at least two quasinormal modes are required to explain the data, with the most damped remaining statistically significant for about one cycle. We probe the remnant’s Kerr nature by constraining the spectroscopic pattern of the dominant quadrupolar (ℓ =𝑚 =2) …

Shallot, a strategic horticultural commodity in Indonesia, is susceptible to biotic stress (e.g., twisted disease) and abiotic stress (e.g., drought). Mycorrhizal fungi offer an environmentally friendly solution to enhance plant resilience. This study evaluated the effects of mycorrhizal application on shallot plants against twisted disease (Fusarium acutatum) and drought stress. Using a randomized complete block design, we assessed growth, disease resistance, and physiological responses. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by Tukey’s honestly significant difference test at a 95% confidence level. Results indicated that mycorrhizal application reduced both the severity and rate of twisted disease development in shallots. …

Public and academic debates typically portray US CEOs as exceptionally well paid. Yet, evidence on the existence and magnitude of a US CEO pay premium is mixed and dated. This study uses an expanded, longitudinal dataset to identify whether such a pay premium exists and explores potential differences across countries, time, and governance and institutional contexts.

Research Findings/Insights

Using a dataset of over 42,000 firm-year observations from 34 countries during 2001–2018, we document a persistent but heterogeneous US CEO pay premium. Compared with non-US peers, US CEOs receive 23% more total pay and 20% more equity-based compensation, on …

Oncofetal reprogramming has recently emerged as a critical concept in translational cancer research, particularly for its role in driving therapeutic resistance across a variety of malignancies. This biological process refers to a pattern of gene expression that is restricted to embryogenesis, but becomes expressed again in a subpopulation of cancer cells. These genes are typically suppressed after embryogenesis, and their aberrant re-expression in tumors endows cancer cells with stem-like properties and enhanced adaptability. The goal of this Social Change Portfolio is to reduce relapse risk among individuals with opioid use disorder who are reentering society after their release from a Delaware correctional facility, by enhancing clinical continuity of care, including counseling, relapse-prevention planning, and linkage to community-based treatment programs.

Significant Findings

This portfolio aims to raise the awareness that justice-involved individuals with opioid use disorder in Delaware face extremely high rates of relapse, overdose, and death during the post-release period, particularly within the first few weeks and months after reentering society. This article examines how established doctrines of individual criminal responsibility under international criminal law—particularly the modes of liability recognized in the Statute of the International Criminal Court and in the jurisprudence of international criminal tribunals—may be applied to human actors who interact with AI systems in the commission of core international crimes. Patrick Collins’ recent book details the development of the cultural industries and placemaking in the Galway region over the past century or so. Focusing on the “peripheral” position of the region, its long relationship to film making, and informed by Galway’s successful application for the European Capital of Culture in 2020, Collins argues for the unique nature of the region as a site of cultural production and consumption. While the book offers moments of insight, particularly in its discussion of ‘festivalisation’, it ultimately lacks the analytical depth and coherence needed to fully capture Galway’s complex cultural identity.
