Three Economist’S Tools For Antitrust And Merger Analysis: Case Applications, Russell W. Pittman

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

This paper presents a non-technical introduction to three economic tools that have in recent years become widespread in competition law enforcement in general and in the analysis of proposed mergers in particular: critical loss analysis, upward pricing pressure, and the vertical arithmetic. In addition, for each tool, its use in a recent U.S. merger case is illustrated: for critical loss analysis, the Novelis/Aleris merger; for upward pricing pressure, the GE/Electrolux merger; and for the vertical arithmetic, the Comcast/NBCU joint venture.

Leading Where You Live: A Qualitative Multi-Case Study Of Public High School Principals Who Reside In Their School Communities, Joseph Held

Despite extensive scholarship on relational trust, social capital, place-based leadership, and culturally responsive practice, little is known about how a principal’s residency within the school community shapes leadership demands. This qualitative, multi-case study employed semi-structured interviews, reflexive memoing, and cross-case thematic analysis to examine how nine Minnesota high school principals who lived in the urban, suburban, and rural communities they served experienced leadership practice, equity work, and emotional labor. Findings revealed that residency functions as a consequential leadership condition that reorganizes how principals build trust, exercise judgment, engage families, navigate boundaries, and interpret equity-related tensions. The tenant moved to dismiss a licensee holdover proceeding, arguing the landlord failed to name the estate of the deceased tenant of record as a necessary party because an unexpired rent-stabilized lease was in effect. The landlord argued the estate was not a necessary party. The court, finding the landlord's own papers and oral arguments conceded a two-year lease term, determined an unexpired lease existed when the proceeding commenced. Granting the tenant's motion, the court dismissed the proceeding without prejudice, holding that the deceased tenant's estate was indeed a necessary party.

Dawn raids remain a cornerstone of competition law enforcement, yet their execution has grown complex in the digital era. Messaging platforms and remote devices increase the risk of on-site deletions, prompting authorities in Türkiye and the EU to adopt a strict-liability stance: any deletion after inspections begin is treated as obstruction per se, regardless of intent, recoverability or probative loss. While this maximises deterrence, it raises concerns of proportionality, privacy and legal certainty. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides unpaid, job‑protected leave only for eligible workers, and rules tied to hours, tenure, and employer size often exclude mothers working part-time. Research on U.S. family and medical leave has documented inequities in access to job protections. The lived experiences of African American/Black mothers navigating this gap remain underrepresented. The purpose of this narrative qualitative study was to explore the lived experiences of African American/Black mothers who worked part-time without mandated job protections, with specific attention to FMLA. This staff education project addressed a practice gap in a psychiatric facility where nonclinical staff frequently submitted incomplete referral documentation for patients with co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions. Due to the facility’s inability to provide acute medical stabilization, medical clearance is required before nurse practitioners can determine admission appropriateness. The project question was, Does educating intake staff on a standardized referral checklist improve knowledge of referral criteria, as measured by pre- and post-education surveys? As a racialized group that is subject to discrimination, US Latinxs are often considered “natural” coalitional partners for Black-led civil rights struggles. Although the BLM movement may serve as a potential site for cross-racial coalition building because both Latinxs and Blacks suffer from racial profiling by law enforcement, the development of a shared status across group boundaries hinges on the interpretation by Latinxs of both their personal- and group-level discrimination experiences. Centralized ICT procurement is promoted as a means to improve efficiency and accountability, yet it often generates rigidity and frustration in developing-country contexts. This study investigates this paradox using South Africa’s State Information Technology Agency as an example affected by the broader challenges of digital governance in the Global South. Using an interpretivist, abductive approach, 55 semi-structured interviews with Government Information Technology Officers were analyzed thematically. Four patterns emerged: bureaucratic inefficiency, misalignment with departmental needs, workaround behavior and declining institutional legitimacy. Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are rare vascular lesions that can cause significant GI bleeding, posing a diagnostic challenge in clinical practice. This literature review examines the management strategies for AVMs in adults, focusing on identifying optimal treatment approaches and minimizing recurrence, particularly in Indonesia where no standardized treatment guidelines are available.

Method. A literature search was conducted from August 24, 2022, to September 11, 2023, using PUBMED®, Cochrane®, Proquest®, and Scopus® databases.
