Backgrounds/Objectives: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) exhibits substantial prognostic heterogeneity that is not fully captured by conventional anatomical staging, highlighting the need for individualized risk assessment. Radiomics enables non-invasive characterization of tumor phenotype, yet high dimensionality and inter-feature correlations often limit model stability and interpretability. Methods: To address these challenges, we developed a multimodal late-fusion framework integrating radiomic, clinical, and demographic information to predict patient-specific absolute risk in the Lung1 cohort (N = 398). Placebo analgesia has shown promise in treating pain, but practitioners are reluctant to prescribe deceptive placebos. Open-label, or honestly prescribed placebos, offer an ethical alternative. Open-label placebos seem to work largely through experimenter-manipulated expectancy, as well as social/environmental factors. Additionally, verbally guided attention to relevant placebo sensations might bolster pain relief. In the present study, expectancy and attention were experimentally manipulated within a 2 (expectancy: high/low) x 2 (attention: high/low) between-subjects design with a no-treatment comparison group. This mixed-methods project examines the role of the Educational Opportunity Program and Student Support Services (EOP/SSS) first-year orientation programs, particularly STEM Summer Bridge, in supporting feelings of belonging and persistence. While institutional efforts often frame student success through metrics such as retention and concepts like sense of belonging, this project interrogates how these are experienced and understood by students themselves. Quantitative analyses compared one-year persistence rates between STEM Summer Bridge participants and multiple comparison groups across three cohorts (2022–2024). Results showed no statistically significant differences in persistence; however, STEM Summer Bridge participants demonstrated persistence rates comparable to or slightly higher …

In comparison to the Asian aquaculture industry, the United States has minimal seaweed production. There are several drivers of the limited industry in the US, such as regulatory constraints and limited market demand, but the ability to scale is a considerable barrier to commercialization. One possible solution is the development of land-based systems that integrate bioreactors, which utilize fewer resources and do not wholly rely on an oceanic flow-through system. Ecosystem services and functions are prone to water resource exploitation resulting in cascading effects that include decrease of biodiversity and loss of riparian vegetation, a keystone habitat in desert riparian ecosystems. Mono Lake is a prime example of overexploitation of water resources leading to legal action and eventually a legally mandated long-term monitoring and restoration project. Human attention is increasingly at risk in an unregulated digital ecosystem where overconsumption shapes neurological function, social interaction, and the ways people make meaning of everyday life. Dominant discourse around digital overuse tends to medicalize the problem, framing it as individual addiction or clinical dysfunction. In this thesis, I argue that such framing obscures what a cultural phenomenon is fundamentally, one in which people are actively questioning their relationship with technology, building awareness, and developing practices that help them slow down and reclaim agency within algorithmically mediated environments. The increasing complexity of international civil aviation has outpaced the mechanisms currently available for the peaceful resolution of disputes. While aviation has long been governed by treaties such as the Chicago Convention of 1944 and managed through institutions like the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), many emerging issues remain unresolved by these frameworks. As commercial space activities move from state-led exploration to market operations, outer space is changing from a mission space into a workspace. As a result, the traditional connecting point for employment taxes, centered on the workplace, begins to lose force. This Article develops the concept of outer space employment taxation and argues that its key issue is not taxation in orbit, but enforceability. Most of the law governing outer space is public international law, which applies, with limited exceptions, directly to nation-states (states) only. The application of international law to nongovernmental entities’ (NGEs), such as natural persons and companies with distinct legal personage, activities in outer space occurs through a state’s domestic legal implementation of that international law. Is Gotham's Joker a terrorist? What about a school shooter? As we approach the twenty-fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the United States still lacks a monolithic legal definition of 'terrorism,' creating a dangerous 'motive gap' between federal statutes. This Article analyzes the friction between the motive-heavy definition of 'domestic terrorism' in Title 18 (which includes a mens rea aspect) and the conduct-focused definition of 'terrorist activity' in Title 8 (which focuses on overt acts). Introduction: Chronic alcohol exposure is associated with increased vulnerability to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and emerging evidence suggests that this susceptibility extends to the severe respiratory manifestations of COVID- 19. The SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein S1 subunit (S1SP) can independently trigger robust inflammatory and vascular injury responses in the lung, and our prior work demonstrated that chronic alcohol consumption markedly intensifies these effects in mice. PTP4A3 phosphatase is a key regulator of inflammation and endothelial barrier function. In this study, we investigated whether the PTP4A3 inhibitor KVX-053 can counteract alcohol-enhanced S1SP-induced lung injury in K18-hACE2 mice.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) persists despite antiretroviral therapy because long-lived viral reservoirs are not eliminated, and ongoing or rebound infection contributes to progressive loss of CD4+ T helper cells. Natural killer (NK) cells can acquire adaptive, antigen-experienced functions, including recall responses to HIV envelope protein, suggesting that defined NK-cell subsets may be therapeutically useful against HIV. Because HIV-responsive adaptive NK-cell activity is enriched among CXC chemokine receptor 6-positive (CXCR6+) NK cells, we tested whether CXCR6+ NK cells provide enhanced antiviral activity and CD4+ T-cell protection compared with CXCR6 NK cells. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the capacity of fibroblasts from permanent and deciduous dental pulp to express inflammatory mediators when exposed to bacterial and inflammatory antigens. It also sought to assess the presence of components of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and the potential modulatory role of ANG-II in this response.

METHODOLOGY: Fibroblasts were cultured from the pulp of permanent and deciduous teeth obtained from three adult and four pediatric donors with informed consent. Cells were stimulated with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharides (LPS) either alone or in combination with ANG-II and, in some cases, with IL-1β. Gene expression …

Race and Racism in Canada's Immigration Detention System is the first comprehensive, independent study to examine race and racism in Canada's immigration detention system. Grounded in rigorous legal analysis and qualitative research, the study draws on interviews with 50 participants, including people with lived experience of immigration detention, as well as lawyers, paralegals, and service providers who work in immigration detention. The research was guided by an advisory board of people with lived-experience in immigration detention and co-led by a collaborative research team.

The Supreme Court of Canada has repeatedly held that police sniffer dog searches are Charter-compliant based on a low standard of reasonable suspicion because they are minimally intrusive, narrowly targeted, and can be highly accurate. Since the Court last considered their constitutionality, however, extensive empirical research has fundamentally challenged assumptions about the reliability and accuracy of police sniffer dogs, as well as the harm to individuals subjected to these searches. Moreover, the phenomenon of handler cueing can operate to transmit a police officer’s unconscious biases—even those they would consciously reject—to their dogs, further reducing accuracy and leading to false alerts …

Despite its long history of admission throughout North America, there appears to be no published Canadian case subjecting bloodstain pattern analysis to the special scrutiny Canadian law demands for novel or contested scientific evidence. Instead, courts have admitted the evidence based largely on the training and experience of forensic examiners, taking it for granted that the field is sufficiently reliable. Lawyers build from templates. Accounts of how law is made rarely mention them. New legislation tends to present itself as original. It is almost never made from scratch. This article makes the hidden process visible. It does so through a study of the near-global spread of environmental impact assessment (EIA) legislation since 1969, using computer-assisted textual similarity analysis to trace what I expected to be identifiable model laws and clear lines of legal inheritance. The search yielded instead a transnational repertoire of legal fragments, repeatedly recombined into new legislative forms across different legal traditions, languages and decades. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients do not follow a single uniform physiological pattern. Patients admitted with the same diagnosis show different clinical trajectories over time making standardized classification and treatment approaches insufficient. The increasing availability of large-scale electronic health records in MIMIC-IV makes it possible to investigate such heterogeneity through data-driven approach that captures how physiology evolves during the early phase of ICU admission. This thesis compares two analytical pipelines designed to identify physiological subtypes from the first 48 hours of ICU time series data. Hormonal fluctuations across the distinct phases of the menstrual cycle have been shown to influence physiological and psychological responses to exercise, with some evidence suggesting phase-dependent changes in symptom presentation and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE); however, findings remain inconsistent, and few studies have examined these relationships across an entire competitive season in female soccer players. Gray iron is composed primarily of an iron matrix and flake graphite, with the higher percentage of volume taken up by the iron matrix. The iron matrix is the transformation product of austenite, and this prior austenite structure is understood to affect the final grain structure. Grain structure affects the properties of a metal, with a finer structure recognized as beneficial for most properties. Ableist discourse has historically positioned disabled people as ‘unfit,’ resulting in their marginalization within society. We develop a fully gauge-invariant analysis of gravitational-wave polarizations in metric 𝑓⁡(𝑅) gravity with a particular focus on the modified Starobinsky model 𝑓⁡(𝑅) =𝑅 +𝛼⁢𝑅2 −2⁢Λ, whose constant-curvature solution 𝑅𝑑 =4⁢Λ provides a natural de Sitter background for both early- and late-time cosmology. Linearizing the field equations around this background, we derive the Klein–Gordon equation for the curvature perturbation 𝛿⁢𝑅 and show that the scalar propagating mode acquires a mass 𝑚2𝜓 =1/(6⁢𝛼), highlighting how the same scalar degree of freedom governs inflationary dynamics at high curvature and the propagation of gravitational waves in the current accelerating Universe. Floating offshore wind (OSW) is a relatively novel technology in the United States, which is positioned to play an integral role in California’s decarbonization strategy. Two federal OSW lease areas have been established off the coast of Northern California, and plans are underway to develop supporting port infrastructure, including the Humboldt Bay Offshore Wind Heavy Lift Marine Terminal (HLMT). The proposed HLMT site is adjacent to communities on the Samoa Peninsula of Humboldt Bay, which currently face socio-environmental vulnerabilities and critical infrastructure gaps. Modern artificial intelligence (AI) governance lacks a formal, enforceable mechanism for determining whether a given AI system is legally permitted to operate in a specific domain and jurisdiction. Existing approaches-such as model cards, audits, and benchmark evaluations provide descriptive information about model behaviour and training data but do not produce binding deployment decisions with legal or financial force. This paper introduces the AI Deployment Authorisation Score (ADAS). This machine-readable, regulator-grade framework evaluates AI systems across five legally and economically grounded dimensions: Risk, Alignment, Externality, Control, and Auditability, derived from safety engineering, alignment theory, algorithmic accountability, and liability economics.
