Transitioning Eating Practices Of Older Adults, Michelle Lajoy Jackson May 2022

Transitioning Eating Practices Of Older Adults, Michelle Lajoy Jackson

Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore what factors may have influenced the transition of an individual older adult’s eating practices over a lifespan and the impact participants perceived those factors currently had upon their nutritional health in older adulthood.

Background: The older adult population is recognized as one of the fastest growing populations in the United States. One of many growing concerns for this population is the impact of dietary practices on the morbidity and mortality of this aging population. There is limited research to date that has explored the transitioning of appetite …

Cultural Change And Threat Perception: Casual Implications On White Nationalist Beliefs And Outgroup Restricting Policies, Andrea Bellovary May 2022

Cultural Change And Threat Perception: Casual Implications On White Nationalist Beliefs And Outgroup Restricting Policies, Andrea Bellovary

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Cultural change is an inevitable aspect of life; however, how people react to cultural change can dramatically vary. Of particular interest to this analysis is how White Americans react to cultural changes occurring in the nation. Across three studies, I examined how White Americans may see cultural change, in the form of demographic change, as threatening and how these threat perceptions may influence their endorsement of White nationalism beliefs and support for outgroup restricting policies. This investigation found that White participants who read about real demographic changes occurring in the nation endorsed more threat perceptions (Study 1). Furthermore, there was …

Competency And Work Environments Among Military And Civilian Perioperative Registered Nurses: A Predictive Model, James X. Stobinski

Dissertations

This study examined the self-assessed competency levels, work environments, sub-specialty training and selected demographic characteristics of two groups—civilian and military (United States Navy) perioperative nurses. The Nurse Competence Scale (NCS) was used to assess competency levels, and the Practice Environment Scale-Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI) was used to assess the nursing work environment. Demographic characteristics, including years of experience, educational level and type of sub-specialty training, were gathered, and comparisons were made between the groups.

A cross-sectional non-equivalent comparison group design was used. The research was conducted by mailed survey packets. All active duty Navy perioperative nurses (228) were surveyed, as …

Defining The Effects Of Political Party Symbols On Ballots In Kenya And Its Impact On Kenya's Electoral Process, Machel Yubu Kazungu May 2022

Defining The Effects Of Political Party Symbols On Ballots In Kenya And Its Impact On Kenya's Electoral Process, Machel Yubu Kazungu

Design is a huge part of any functional democracy. Many of the most essential forms and documents that connect the government with the citizen are crafted by designers. Good design helps bridge the gap between citizen and government interactions—making them effective and pleasant. Poor design can create a barrier to exercising one’s rights as a citizen. Ballots are one of those official documents; however, they are more essential because they are the only way that the voter can have their voice heard in an election. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the importance of ballot design, the limitations …

Seasonal Variation And Tracking Of Climate Niche Of A Migratory Bird, Javier Gutiérrez Illán, Guiming Wang, D. Tommy King, Fred L. Cunningham May 2022

Seasonal Variation And Tracking Of Climate Niche Of A Migratory Bird, Javier Gutiérrez Illán, Guiming Wang, D. Tommy King, Fred L. Cunningham

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Migratory birds inhabit different areas during breeding and non-breeding seasons. Depending on the time of the year, they may utilize different resources available in seasonal habitats, but also are subjected to changing climate regimes during their annual life cycle. Migratory birds may adopt ecological niche tracking to cope with different environmental conditions between breeding and non-breeding grounds. The American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, hereafter ‘AWPE’) is a short-distance migrant between the Gulf of Mexico coastal regions (nonbreeding grounds) and the Northern Great Plains (breeding grounds) of Canada and the US. The American White Pelican is a piscivore, feeding …

On Power’S Doorstep: Gays, Jews, And Liminal Complicity In Reproducing Masculine Domination, Andrew J. Shapiro May 2022

On Power’S Doorstep: Gays, Jews, And Liminal Complicity In Reproducing Masculine Domination, Andrew J. Shapiro

Publications and Research

This article explores the gender complexities of men caught between social power and powerlessness. Specifically, I consider the cases of Jewish men and gay men in the late modern West, two demographics with deep historic ties to both abjection and privilege. Such "in-between-ness” steers many, especially those who are white, cisgender, and/or otherwise privileged, toward what I term liminal complicity, a normative adaptation whereby men embrace manly ideals while disavowing femininity in themselves and others. I synthesize cultural, interactionist, and psychoanalytic literatures on stigma, boundaries, and gender practice to articulate liminal complicity as both an emotional retreat from stigmatization and …

The Rise Of Neo-Fascist Populism And Islamophobia In The West, Mohamed Tawfiq Said Tabib May 2022

The Rise Of Neo-Fascist Populism And Islamophobia In The West, Mohamed Tawfiq Said Tabib

Dissertations and Theses

Trumpism can be defined as racist right-wing neo-fascist populism and nativism combined with a cult of personality. There is very little distinction between neo-fascists, the alt-right, and far-right groups. All can be identified by their socio-political philosophy and vehement beliefs of racial supremacy, ultranationalism, populism, xenophobia, nativism, and anti-immigrant sentiment, as well as being opposed to liberal Western democracy and its values. This thesis explores why there has been a popular international resurgence of far-right neo-fascist movements throughout the European Union and the United States and examines the impact on inter-group social and political relations with those of different racial …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Feeling Of Security And Access To Guns Among Brazilians Living In The United States, Natalia Ferreira Da Silva May 2022

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Feeling Of Security And Access To Guns Among Brazilians Living In The United States, Natalia Ferreira Da Silva

COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium

Even after the 2005 Brazilian Firearms Referendum resulting in half of the population voting against gun control, Brazil has demonstrated a difficult environment for gun acquisition. Since the USA has a culture of firearms and has received thousands of Brazilian immigrants in past years, a qualitative research was made in order to identify what the perspectives of Brazilians living in the USA are toward gun acquisition.

Third Nephi: An Incomparable Scripture— Proceedings Of A Willes Center Symposium

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

The personal appearance of Jesus Christ as recorded in the book of 3 Nephi constitutes the narrative and spiritual climax of the Book of Mormon. Although the sacred account repeats and reinforces many of the Savior’s Old World teachings, many aspects of his New World ministry have no parallel elsewhere in scripture. In this light, Third Nephi: An Incomparable Scripture is a fitting title for a new book published by the Maxwell Institute and Deseret Book.

Foodways In Chile: A Bridge Back To Nature, Kayla Weiss May 2022

Foodways In Chile: A Bridge Back To Nature, Kayla Weiss

Capstone Collection

As the area of food studies continues to develop and evolve it has been recognized that, not only is food a necessity to life, but it is uniquely tied to understanding culture, history, and other aspects of a society. This study arose from recognizing this influence and importance and I took the opportunity to better understand how Birchwood College might be an optimal site for a short-term study abroad program based in food studies. I conducted a needs assessment through landscape research, surveying students, and interviewing food studies faculty and international educators at Birchwood College. The research findings offered insights …

Urine Oxygen Partial Pressure Monitoring To Assess Acute Kidney Injury Risk, Lars Lofgren, Kai Kück, Natalie Silverton May 2022

Urine Oxygen Partial Pressure Monitoring To Assess Acute Kidney Injury Risk, Lars Lofgren, Kai Kück, Natalie Silverton

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication associated with cardiac surgery. AKI is associated with increased hospital costs, hospital length of stay (LOS), and mortality risk. The KDIGO criteria are the most common diagnostic criteria and are based on changes in serum creatinine and decreased urine output. While useful for estimating renal function, serum creatinine and urine output are not renal specific, can be influenced by factors other than kidney injury and lead to delayed AKI diagnosis which precludes injury prevention. To overcome these limitations, researchers have primarily focused on chemical biomarkers. The use of these tests is limited …

Untangling Media Literacy, Information Literacy, And Digital Literacy: A Systematic Meta-Review Of Core Concepts In Media Education, Géraldine Wuyckens, Normand Landry, Pierre Fastrez

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This article presents a systematic meta-review of the scientific literature discussing the concepts of information literacy, media literacy, and digital literacy. While carrying out a cross analysis of the way in which literature reviews specifically address these three concepts, this article identifies, and articulates a critical analysis of, the main findings from the reviewed texts regarding the conceptual landscape that they cover. This work highlights confusion between the constitutive dimensions of literacies, recurrent difficulties in establishing theoretical articulations between contributions, and operationalization problems in observing and assessing these literacies. These issues are the subject of a discussion grounded in the …

Critical Analysis Of Critical Thinking, Jim Potter May 2022

Critical Analysis Of Critical Thinking, Jim Potter

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This study provides an analysis of how the term “critical thinking” has been defined by authors of articles published in the Journal of Media Literacy Education. It provides answers to three questions: (1) How frequently is the term “critical thinking” mentioned by scholars who write about media literacy?; (2) In what ways do scholars convey the meaning of the term?; and (3) To what extent is the term presented with a consistent meaning? While the term “critical thinking” appeared in more than half of the articles examined, there was a great variety in the way authors presented their meanings …

Are We Centering The Adult In Youth Media Education? Decolonizing The Reception Of Youth-Produced Media Texts, Jacqueline Ryan Vickery May 2022

Are We Centering The Adult In Youth Media Education? Decolonizing The Reception Of Youth-Produced Media Texts, Jacqueline Ryan Vickery

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This article asks media educators to consider how the assumptions and values we hold are reflected in our reception and circulation of youth-produced texts in ways that colonize youth interests, sensibilities, and aesthetics. Drawing from experiences facilitating youth media workshops and focusing on two videos produced by teens in foster care as case studies, I demonstrate how youth media programs overlook the value of “just for fun” youth-produced media texts. Although media educators value play as part of the media production process, I argue that the media we choose to circulate and celebrate are texts that resonate with and reflect …

Exploring New Literacies: A Case Study On Technology And Teacher Development In Cuban Primary Schools, Kate Maloney Williams May 2022

Exploring New Literacies: A Case Study On Technology And Teacher Development In Cuban Primary Schools, Kate Maloney Williams

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Cuba has successfully eradicated traditional illiteracy – with over 99% of its population considered to be literate. However, as other societies have digitized and moved towards a globalized marketplace, U.S. sanctions have severely limited the import of new technologies into the country and classroom. In response, this case study sought to investigate the learning environments of Cuban primary schools to determine the breadth of a divide and the suitability for applying recommended frameworks to teaching. Observations of primary school classrooms and facilities provided insight, bolstered by semi-structured group interviews and surveys with teachers, teaching students, and education professors. Findings revealed …

Going Against The Grain? Examining The Efficacy Of Media Literacy Interventions On Congenial Media Effects, Matthew L. Blomberg May 2022

Going Against The Grain? Examining The Efficacy Of Media Literacy Interventions On Congenial Media Effects, Matthew L. Blomberg

Journal of Media Literacy Education

While people’s proclivity toward congenial partisan media has been well documented, methods of resistance are less researched. This study explores the congenial media effect, the phenomenon of our gravitation to and acceptance of like-minded media, and whether a media literacy intervention can mitigate people’s acceptance of ideologically congruent partisan media. In an online experiment (N = 199), conservatives and liberals were exposed to differing media literacy interventions, one reviewing the traits of objectivity and bias, another which combined the former with an opportunity to reflect on participants’ own political beliefs. All were then exposed to amenable partisan content on the …

Measuring Fake News Acumen Using A News Media Literacy Instrument, Tyler W. S. Nagel May 2022

Measuring Fake News Acumen Using A News Media Literacy Instrument, Tyler W. S. Nagel

Journal of Media Literacy Education

News media literacy education is gaining increased attention in the age of fake news and post-truth America. However, as with any pedagogical goal, it is important to be able to evaluate the success of the delivery. In a survey built on existing news literacy frameworks, 1476 students at a large Canadian polytechnic answered questions about their own news literacy, fake news acumen, and news consumption habits. Analysis of the data suggests that conscientious fake-news attitudes and behaviors are correlated with an existing news media literacy scale, providing a method of evaluating the success of fake news education efforts.

The Forgotten Concentration Camps Of 2022, Morgan R. Schroeder May 2022

The Forgotten Concentration Camps Of 2022, Morgan R. Schroeder

History: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Many people would like to believe they could never be a Nazi, but as we speak a genocide not unlike the Holocaust is happening in China and North Korea. We must address this issue if we are to see ourselves as capable of taking on a threat as great as the Nazis. Millions of people are facing the worst oppression this world has ever seen and they need our help in any way we can afford it. In this paper, I compare Nazi Germany to China (1930s-present) and report on how Americans perceive the latter country. Although the terror and …

Influence Of Citrate And Phosphate On The Adsorption Of Adenosine-5′-Monophosphate At The Hematite Water Interface, Sudipta Rakshit, Avedananda Ray, Ali Taheri, Michael E. Essington

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Nucleic acid derived organic phosphorus (Po) is an important source of plant available P when degraded to inorganic phosphate (P(V)i). It is known that when nucleic acids or components are adsorbed on mineral surfaces, the enzymatic degradation is hindered or delayed. Thus, understanding adsorption/desorption mechanisms of nucleic acids and their derivatives are key to assess the biogeochemical pathways of Po cycling. Here we report adsorption mechanisms of adenosine-5′-monophosphate (AMP) on hematite, a common iron oxide mineral, under various solution properties using macroscopic and in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopic probes. The effects of citrate, mimicking organic …

Building Capacity For Socio-Ecological Change Through The Campus Farm: A Mixed-Methods Study, Francesca A. Williamson, Amber J. Rollings, Grant A. Fore, Julia L. Angstmann, Brandon H. Sorge

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Given the ongoing socio-ecological crises, higher education institutions need curricular interventions to support students in developing the knowledge, skills, and perspectives needed to create a sustainable future. Campus farms are increasingly becoming sites for sustainability and environmental education toward this end. This paper describes the design and outcomes of a farm-situated place-based experiential learning (PBEL) intervention in two undergraduate biology courses and one environmental studies course over two academic years. We conducted a mixed-method study using pre/post-surveys and focus groups to examine the relationship between the PBEL intervention and students’ sense of place and expressions of pro-environmentalism. The quantitative analysis …
