Preventing Spinal Muscular Atrophy Through The National Premarital Screening Program In Türkiye: An Economic Comparison With Treatment Costs, Gamze Dur, Gülcan Teci̇rli̇, Nurullah Okumuş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a severe neuromuscular disorder with high treatment costs and significant psychosocial burden. In 2021, Türkiye launched a national premarital SMA carrier screening program integrated with in vitro fertilization (IVF) with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) services for couples identified as carriers. This study aimed to compare the costs associated with the carrier screening and prevention program versus a no-screening (treatment-only) scenario.

Materials and methods: A cost comparison model was developed using data from the Turkish Statistical Institute, the Ministry of Health, and the Social Security Institution. The annual costs of SMA treatment (with nusinersen and …

A Study Of The Intellectual Property Rights Of Farmers With Special Reference To The Protection Of Plant Variety And The Farmers' Rights Act, 2001, Gomathi R Ms

Theses and Dissertations

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) confer exclusive rights on individuals over the creations of their minds. Intellectual property is protected through patents, trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs, geographical indications, and other legal rights, enabling inventors to obtain economic benefits and legal recognition from their innovations. These rights provide exclusive usage for a prescribed period and have evolved significantly over the years, sharing similarities with ownership rights over tangible property. As intangible rights, IPR primarily consist of the property element and the object to which that property relates. Among the various forms of IPR, Plant Variety Protection (PVP) rights recognize the creativity and …

The Perk Signaling Pathway As A Marker Of The Unfolded Protein Response In Patients With Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Nergi̇z Erkut, Turhan Köksal, Seli̇m Demi̇r, Ahmet Menteşe, Özlen Balta, Mehmet Sönmez

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK) pathway plays a critical role in preventing the accumulation of misfolded or unfolded proteins within the endoplasmic reticulum. In this study, the role of the PERK signaling pathway was evaluated in newly diagnosed, treatment-naïve patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Materials and methods: Plasma levels of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2-alpha kinase 3 (eIF2AK3), glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78), activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein homologous protein (CHOP), hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α), and caspase 3 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in peripheral blood samples obtained from AML patients and healthy …

Systematic Synthesis Of Crispr/Cas Applications For Enhancing Salt Tolerance In Crops: A Decade Of Progress And Challenges, Xindi Sun, Fusheng Wu, Zhuanzhuan Ma, Guohao Liang, Shumei Chen, Xutong Hu, Shugao Fan, Ying Zhao

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Soil salinity is a major constraint on global crop productivity, driving the need for salt-tolerant varieties. While CRISPR-Cas genome editing offers targeted solutions for trait improvement, significant biological and technical bottlenecks limit its application in conferring salt stress resilience. This systematic summarizes findings from 83 peer-reviewed studies (2015–2024) employing CRISPR/Cas technologies to improve salt tolerance in five major crops (rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, barley). Our systematic review reveals that early single-gene edits achieved modest gains (30–50% Na⁺ exclusion) but often showed limited yield gains in field settings, potentially due to compensatory regulation and environmental variation. The literature suggests that multiplex …

Colonisation, Globalisation And A Pandemic: Developing Understandings Of Inclusive Education In Malaysia, Vicky Bamsey, Yee Ling Lee, Moses Samuel

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This is a theoretical paper that examines how colonisation, globalisation and a crisis such as the Covid-19 pandemic have had a significant influence on the development of inclusive education policy and practice in Malaysia. Drawing on the ideas of dependency from Farid Alatas, and Carol Bacchi’s focus on the identification of the underlying problem within policies, as well as Stephen Ball’s policy cycle, we highlight how global events have repercussions at a policy level now and into the future. This paper contributes to the wider inclusive education debate through the innovative use of these three different theoretical lenses, informed by …

Style-Preserved Inference Flow (Spif): Real-Time Style-Locked Image Generation Through Model Pruning And Latent Space Optimization, Douglass W. Sharp Feb 2026

Style-Preserved Inference Flow (Spif): Real-Time Style-Locked Image Generation Through Model Pruning And Latent Space Optimization, Douglass W. Sharp

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses Style-Preserved Inference Flow (SPIF), a system for real-time style-locked image generation that maintains consistent artistic style across frames at interactive rates. The core innovation is structural model pruning guided by style-consistency metrics rather than general image quality, producing compact single-purpose models that generate images in a specific artistic style at 60+ frames per second. Additional disclosed techniques include latent-space frame coherence (bootstrapping sequential frames from previous latent states, analogous to dirty-rectangle optimization in game rendering), composable latent object descriptors for real-time scene manipulation, and voice-driven continuous generation loops. Working prototypes demonstrate 3.35 FPS full-pipeline generation at 1024×1024 …
