Examining The Perceived Role Of Empathy And Self-Efficacy Among College Students That Have Completed Bystander Training And Intervened To Prevent A Potential Sexual Assault Situation: A Phenomenological Study, Jennifer Cassandra Hawkinberry

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the perceived role of empathy and self-efficacy in college students that have completed a bystander intervention training program and intervened to prevent a potential sexual assault situation at two small private Christian colleges. The theories guiding this study are Bandura’s social learning theory and theories of self-efficacy. Bandura’s (1977) social learning theory suggests that individuals quickly learn new behaviors through observation and modeling. Bystander intervention programs that include opportunities for college students to observe and listen to the stories of females that have experienced a sexual assault may increase empathy …

The Power Of Reciprocity: How The Confederated Salish & Kootenai Water Compact Illuminates A Path Toward Natural Resources Reconciliation, Michelle Bryan

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article chronicles the negotiation and passage of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes Water Compact, ratified in 2020, which has created one of the most innovative water management regimes envisioned among sovereigns. The Compact’s journey toward ratification is extraordinary, as the parties over the span of three decades worked to overcome historically entrenched racism and political opposition to craft a model that would provide enough water for all peoples and the fishery. Compounding the challenge, the Flathead Reservation itself contains vast swaths of checkerboard land held by non-Indians and a major federal irrigation project that has permanently altered the …

A Random Stroll Amongst Anthony Trollope's Lawyers, James J. Fishman Apr 2022

A Random Stroll Amongst Anthony Trollope's Lawyers, James J. Fishman

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) resides in the pantheon of nineteenth century English literature. Overcoming a miserable childhood, he became an official with the post office and is credited with introducing the familiar red mailbox. While working full time in his postal position until 1867, he still managed to publish 47 novels, travel books, biographies, short stories, collections of essays, and articles on various topics. Trollope has been described as the novelist of the ordinary for his realistic description of English society. Law and legal issues flow through Trollope’s fiction. The legal system held a special importance to him as the skeleton …

States Can Infringe Upon Your Intellectual Property Rights With Impunity In The Era Of "New Federalism", Homayoon Rafatijo, Dennis D. Crouch

Faculty Publications

Antagonized by half a century of insouciance toward federalism boundaries, the "New Federalism" revival began under Chief Justice Rehnquist. As part of this revival, the Rehnquist Court substantially restrained Congress's authority to regulate commerce, abrogate sovereign immunity, fashion remedies pursuant to Section 5 of the Fourteenth Amendment, and "commandeer" state officials. The New Federalism has continued in the Roberts Court Era, most recently in a case weighing congressionally enacted copyright policy against the sovereignty of individual states to disregard copyright. In Allen v. Cooper, a unanimous Supreme Court held that Congress's express power under Article I is not a …

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

I am deeply honored to be invited to deliver this year's version of a lecture series honoring Professor Louis Henkin whose contributions to the development of international law-and very specifically to international human rights law - are and very long will continue to be remembered. I am also a bit overwhelmed as I notice that the organizers have put me in the company of wonderful colleagues and masters of this field, several of them my friends and persons whose work I admire. It is also especially gratifying for me to have the occasion of renewing contact with the Henkin family …

Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On The Malaria Control Program At The Epidemic Treatment Center Of Regional Hospital Of Kindia, Guinea, Mohamed Keita

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

The impact of infectious disease outbreaks and pandemics on the health systems could be alarming especially when there is an overlap in clinical manifestations of two infectious conditions. Despite the remarkable progress in reducing the burden of malaria in Africa since 2000, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the malaria control program. This paper describes the impact of the COVID- 19 pandemic on the health service delivery in Guinea and its consequences on malaria control programs before and during the COVID 19 pandemic. This paper aims to assess the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on the malaria control program between …

Establishing A Drosophila Colon Cancer Model To Study Interactions And Therapeutic Targets Of Oncogenic Pathways, Kathleen T. Mccaslin Apr 2022

Establishing A Drosophila Colon Cancer Model To Study Interactions And Therapeutic Targets Of Oncogenic Pathways, Kathleen T. Mccaslin

Honors Theses

The objective of this project is to develop an in vivo colorectal cancer (CRC) model in Drosophila melanogaster to test the role of Ras and Wnt pathways in gastrointestinal cancer as potential therapeutic targets. To do so, we have (a) developed a CRC model in flies, (b) tested the levels of Ras and Wnt pathway activity in this model, and (c) will use drugs to find inhibitors of these pathways. Using fly mutants and transgenic flies we have created small patches of cancerous cells in the fly intestine in which have activated oncogenic Ras (mutation RasV12) and dominant negative p53 …

Sounds Of Space: Utilising The Sonic Language Of Space Music In Music Production, Chris Lambert Apr 2022

Sounds Of Space: Utilising The Sonic Language Of Space Music In Music Production, Chris Lambert

Postgraduate

Research examining the relationship between popular music and outer space has largely focused on lyrical themes, visual aesthetics, cultural meanings, and science-fiction film soundtracks. Comparatively little attention has been paid to the sonic devices through which popular music represents the cosmic and extra-terrestrial. This study addresses that gap by identifying and analysing the sonic language of space music across a broad range of popular music traditions from the 1950s to the present. Using thematic analysis of musical texts and a practice-led research methodology, the project examines recurring sonic signifiers associated with outer space, sciencefiction futurism, and imagined extra-terrestrial environments. Through …

Molecular Characterization And Expression Variation Of The Odorant Receptor Co-Receptor In The Formosan Subterranean Termite, Paula Castillo, Claudia Husseneder, Qian Sun

Faculty Publications

Subterranean termites live in underground colonies with a division of labor among castes (i.e., queens and kings, workers, and soldiers). The function of social colonies relies on sophisticated chemical communication. Olfaction, the sense of smell from food, pathogens, and colony members, plays an important role in their social life. Olfactory plasticity in insects can be induced by long- and short-term environmental perturbations, allowing adaptive responses to the chemical environment according to their physiological and behavioral state. However, there is a paucity of information on the molecular basis of olfaction in termites. In this study, we identified an ortholog encoding the …

The corn earworm/bollworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), is a pest species that is targeted by both Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) maize and cotton in the United States. Cry1Ab and Vip3Aa20 are two common Bt toxins that are expressed in transgenic maize. The objective of this study was to determine the resistance allele frequency (RAF) to Cry1Ab and Vip3Aa20 in H. zea populations that were collected during 2018 and 2019 from four southeastern U.S. states: Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina. By using a group-mating approach, 104 F2 iso-lines of H. zea were established from field collections with most iso-lines (85) from Louisiana. …
