Arithmetic And Necessity: A Quasi-Concrete Modal Structuralist Account, Benjamin Faltesek Dec 2026

Arithmetic And Necessity: A Quasi-Concrete Modal Structuralist Account, Benjamin Faltesek

Mathematics, Philosophy and Physics (D.Sc.) Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the necessity of arithmetic by distinguishing two tasks that are often run together: the derivation task, which seeks to prove that mathematical truths are necessary, and the characterization task, which asks what kind of necessity arithmetic has and what grounds it. Setting the former aside for now, I focus on the latter, arguing that an adequate explanation of arithmetical necessity requires two sources: logical necessity and the necessary possibility that the right kind of structure exists. The second source makes mathematical modality distinctively mathematical, and the dissertation’s positive contribution emerges chiefly in that area. I survey and …

Thermally-Driven Equiaxation Of Columnar Grains And Α″ Nanoparticles Enabling Isotropic Β-Ti Alloys With Strength–Ductility Synergy Manufactured By Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Lei Qin, Shengfeng Zhou, Jianbo Jin, Huan Yang, Kunmao Li, Cheng Deng, Yujie Yuan, Lai-Chang Zhang Dec 2026

Thermally-Driven Equiaxation Of Columnar Grains And Α″ Nanoparticles Enabling Isotropic Β-Ti Alloys With Strength–Ductility Synergy Manufactured By Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Lei Qin, Shengfeng Zhou, Jianbo Jin, Huan Yang, Kunmao Li, Cheng Deng, Yujie Yuan, Lai-Chang Zhang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The transient thermal cycling characteristics during laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) induce elemental segregation and columnar growth, resulting in significant mechanical anisotropy and strength–ductility trade-off in titanium alloys. In order to break through this bottleneck, this work proposes a strategy of inducing equiaxation of columnar grains through recrystallization and regulating the morphology of the α″ phase (from an acicular shape to nanoparticles) to synergistically optimize the uniformity, strength and ductility of LPBF-fabricated Ti-35Nb-5Cu-xMo (Ti355x, x = 0, 1, 2, 4 wt%) alloys. The results demonstrate that LPBF-fabricated Ti355x alloys display equiaxed/columnar microstructures with significant mechanical anisotropy and strength–ductility trade-off. After …

Lost In Chaos: The Battle Between Selfcare And Motherhood, Sarah Shahzad Nov 2026

Lost In Chaos: The Battle Between Selfcare And Motherhood, Sarah Shahzad

MS Marketing Research Projects/Theses

Motherhood in collectivist societies such as Pakistan is deeply intertwined with caregiving, leaving limited space for women’s self-care or personal well-being. This study explores how young Pakistani mothers negotiate self-care within competing expectations of maternal sacrifice, cultural morality, and structural constraints. Guided by the Institutional Logics Perspective (ILP), it examines how familial norms, religious values, and market forces collectively shape women’s self-care practices, framing self-care not as an autonomous act but as a negotiated process embedded within social and institutional boundaries. This study adopts an interpretive phenomenological approach to explore how Pakistani mothers experience and negotiate self-care within cultural and …

“Private Rights” In Public Law, J. Colin Bradley Nov 2026

“Private Rights” In Public Law, J. Colin Bradley

Michigan Law Review

Private rights have returned to play a central role in public law. In the last few years alone, courts have invoked private rights to elaborate the elements of Article III standing, interpret the scope of 42 U.S.C. § 1983’s cause of action, articulate the limits of the administrative state, and give meaning to enumerated constitutional rights. But unlike private law—which has confronted a similar fall and rise of private rights with wide-ranging discussion over their meaning—public law has not been subjected to a fulsome debate about what exactly private rights are. Both proponents and critics of the return of a …

Tribal Federalism: Expanding The Indian Gaming Paradigm, Adam Crepelle Nov 2026

Tribal Federalism: Expanding The Indian Gaming Paradigm, Adam Crepelle

Michigan Law Review

Federalism has long been celebrated for its ability to foster policy innovation, transforming states into “laboratories of democracy.” Yet, federalism discourse has largely neglected Indian tribes, the third sovereign in the American constitutional order. Tribes regularly implement novel policies. However, tribal policy innovation is hindered by uncertainty over whether tribes or states govern Indian country activities.

The most influential framework for determining the scope of tribal versus state regulatory power in Indian country is derived from the Supreme Court’s opinion in California v. Cabazon Band of Mission Indians—the case that launched Indian gaming. Cabazon held that tribes cannot permit …

Scalpels, Not Hatchets: Beyond Access Bans And Toward A Design-Based Framework For Social Media Regulation, Case Thomason Nov 2026

Scalpels, Not Hatchets: Beyond Access Bans And Toward A Design-Based Framework For Social Media Regulation, Case Thomason

Michigan Law Review

State legislatures have enacted more than a dozen statutes restricting minors’ access to social media platforms in response to mounting evidence of harm to minors’ mental health. Nearly every one of these laws has been struck down in federal court before taking effect. The problem is structural, in that lawmakers have been using hatchets rather than scalpels to address this issue. Hatchets are sweeping, access-based restrictions that condition minors’ access to platforms on age verification or parental consent. In contrast, scalpels are precise, design-based regulations that target specific platform features such as infinite scroll, push notifications, and engagement-maximizing recommendation algorithms …

Listening As Method: She Speaks And The Case For Podcasting As A Feminist Research Methodology In Women's Non-Medicalised Self-Care, Narelle Lemon Nov 2026

Listening As Method: She Speaks And The Case For Podcasting As A Feminist Research Methodology In Women's Non-Medicalised Self-Care, Narelle Lemon

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Women's non-medicalised self-care — the everyday, relational practices through which women tend to themselves — remains largely illegible to conventional health research methods. This article argues that podcasting constitutes a feminist research methodology rather than a supplementary dissemination tool and makes the case for its adoption in qualitative health research on women's wellbeing. The argument develops through an extended case study of She Speaks , an Australian podcast series produced by the author across four seasons and sixty-two episodes. Situated within arts-based research and feminist methodological traditions, the study treats the podcast itself as the research vehicle: a site where …

A Finite Element Model For Thermomechanical Stress-Strain Fields In Transversely Isotropic Strain-Limiting Materials, Saugata Ghosh, Dambaru Bhatta, S. M. Mallikarjunaiah Nov 2026

A Finite Element Model For Thermomechanical Stress-Strain Fields In Transversely Isotropic Strain-Limiting Materials, Saugata Ghosh, Dambaru Bhatta, S. M. Mallikarjunaiah

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper presents a comprehensive computational framework for investigating thermo-elastic fracture in transversely isotropic materials, where classical linear elasticity fails to predict physically realistic behavior near stress concentrations. We address the challenge of unphysical strain singularities at crack tips by employing a strain-limiting theory of elasticity. This theory is characterized by an algebraically nonlinear constitutive relationship between stress and strain, which intrinsically enforces a limit on the norm of the strain tensor. This approach allows the development of very large stresses, as expected near a crack tip, while ensuring that the corresponding strains remain physically bounded. A loosely coupled system …

Lrq-Solver: A Transformer-Based Neural Operator For Fast And Accurate Solving Of Large-Scale 3d Pdes, Peijian Zeng, Guan Wang, Haohao Gu, Xiaoguang Hu, Tiezhu Gao, Zhuowei Wang, Aimin Yang, Xiaoyu Song Nov 2026

Lrq-Solver: A Transformer-Based Neural Operator For Fast And Accurate Solving Of Large-Scale 3d Pdes, Peijian Zeng, Guan Wang, Haohao Gu, Xiaoguang Hu, Tiezhu Gao, Zhuowei Wang, Aimin Yang, Xiaoyu Song

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Solving large-scale PDEs on complex three-dimensional geometries remains a central challenge in scientific and engineering computing, often due to expensive pre-processing stages and high computational overhead. We present Low-Rank Query-based PDE Solver (LRQ-Solver), a physics-integrated deep learning framework for efficient CAE simulations of complex three-dimensional geometries in CAD-driven design analysis. Built upon the Parameter-Conditioned Lagrangian Modeling (PCLM) that embeds physical consistency into the learning process and the Low-Rank Query Attention (LR-QA) module that reduces attention complexity from O(N2) to O(NC2+C3) via covariance decomposition, LRQ-Solver supports multi-configuration analysis within iterative design workflows. On two benchmark datasets, it achieves a 28.6% error …

The Fluidic Unification Of Cosmological Anomalies: Resolving Dark Matter, Dark Energy, And The Neutrino Cusp Under Material Volumetric Monism, Christopher L. Eckes Oct 2026

The Fluidic Unification Of Cosmological Anomalies: Resolving Dark Matter, Dark Energy, And The Neutrino Cusp Under Material Volumetric Monism, Christopher L. Eckes

Defensive Publications Series

Standard Lambda-CDM cosmology relies on independent, unverified parameters—specifically cold dark matter particles and an ungrounded vacuum energy density scalar (Lambda)—to force mathematical consistency within rigid Riemannian spacetime models. This paper unifies these macroscopic anomalies under the Material Volumetric Monism paradigm, demonstrating that what mainstream models observe as distinct "dark" phenomena are phase states of a continuous, 2D pre-geometric viscoelastic substrate phase fluid projecting 3D volumetric fields.

By evaluating the system's global wave mechanics and informational processing costs, we eliminate open thermodynamic data sinks. We demonstrate that dark matter is a macroscopic manifestation of localized substrate pushback shear stress, while dark …

“It Is The ,,I,, I Write About”: José Garcia Villa’S Conceptualization Of The Poet In “A ,,Composition,,”, Nathan Timothy Y. Chan Oct 2026

“It Is The ,,I,, I Write About”: José Garcia Villa’S Conceptualization Of The Poet In “A ,,Composition,,”, Nathan Timothy Y. Chan

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

The poems of José Garcia Villa are eccentric, and it would seem that it is on account of this eccentricity that most scholarship on Villa has thus sharply turned, instead, to Villa’s critical essays on Philippine literature in English so as to excavate from that rich reservoir of thought some small Villean insight capable of furthering a politics-centered reading of Villa’s works. Thus, critics of Villa’s works unintentionally neglect a serious discussion of the themes of Villa’s poetry. Because of this facet of Villean scholarship, this article responds by, first, demonstrating that Villa’s critical essays can be read as philosophical …

“To A Cupped Hand’S Size”: Reading Poetics Of Scale In Edith Tiempo’S Poetry, Thomas Leonard D. Shaw Oct 2026

“To A Cupped Hand’S Size”: Reading Poetics Of Scale In Edith Tiempo’S Poetry, Thomas Leonard D. Shaw

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

Edith Cutaran Lopez-Tiempo’s body of work, alongside her stature as Philippine National Artist for Literature, has generated substantial scholarship on the fertile imaginaries and intersections of formalist poetics, the institutionalization of the writing workshop, and Philippine poetry in English. Building on these contributions, I turn instead to Tiempo’s negotiation of self-fashioning, memory work, and imaginative practice as a way of articulating questions of scale in her oeuvre. By reading a selection of poems from several of her poetry collections, I argue that reading Tiempo’s sustained engagement with strategies of disclosure and scale, as well as her preoccupation with the intimacy …

The Irresolution Of Genre In Edith Tiempo’S The Builder, Kaisa R. Aquino Oct 2026

The Irresolution Of Genre In Edith Tiempo’S The Builder, Kaisa R. Aquino

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

The tradition and history of detective fiction in the Philippines remain a slim and largely untheorized terrain, and Edith Tiempo’s contribution to the genre with her fifth and last novel, The Builder (2003), has yet to receive critical attention. This paper takes the novel as its primary text and argues that the quasi-detective and the criminal, both indigenous subjects, produce a critical tension that is illegible to the generic framework of Western detective fiction. While the novel succeeds in deploying genre conventions, such as the analysis of signs through textual and material evidence, the contract of resolution through the assertion …

Essentializing The Ifugao For The National Allegory In F. Sionil Jose’S “The God Stealer”, Lioba E. Piluden Oct 2026

Essentializing The Ifugao For The National Allegory In F. Sionil Jose’S “The God Stealer”, Lioba E. Piluden

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

Postcolonial writing in the Philippines turned towards the indigenous Filipino, “the tribal Filipino, or the poor Filipino least touched by colonial culture” (Roces 1994, 300) to become a vessel for an elusive national identity. One of the creatures to arise from this milieu of Philippine literature was F. Sionil Jose’s “The God Stealer” (1959), a short story often read as an allegory of Philippine-American relations or the Filipino native rejecting colonial power by returning to their roots. It is also Jose’s most anthologized short story. Despite readings of “The God Stealer” generally falling into the groove of postcolonial analysis, little …

Bansa At Kapuluan: Notes On The Archipelagic Nuance Of Bienvenido Lumbera’S Discourse Of The Region And Nationhood, Adhoniz B. Rebong Oct 2026

Bansa At Kapuluan: Notes On The Archipelagic Nuance Of Bienvenido Lumbera’S Discourse Of The Region And Nationhood, Adhoniz B. Rebong

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

This paper explores a re-reading of the ‘region’ that appears in National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera’s advocacy for valuing regional literature as a foundation of a strong national literature. His discourse against the othering of the regional literature as ‘vernacular’ is encapsuled in the philosophy of his works: that the region represents a precise, immediate worldview, while the national offers a wider, encompassing perspective of the Filipinos (Lumbera 156). Lumbera’s discourse of the nation and the region is revisited by this paper in the lens of Archipelagic studies, specifically using the kapuluan as a Philippine conceptual iteration. In essence this paper …

Ang Arkipelagotiko Sa Galaw Ng Asoge Ni Cirilo F. Bautista(The Archipelagothic In Cirilo F. Bautista’S Galaw Ng Asoge [The Movement Of Mercury]), Genevieve Asenjo

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

“And Why Here?” Reading Hong Kong In Nick Joaquin’S The Woman Who Had Two Navels, Raymon D. Ritumban Oct 2026

“And Why Here?” Reading Hong Kong In Nick Joaquin’S The Woman Who Had Two Navels, Raymon D. Ritumban

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

Nick Joaquin (1917–2004) is a Filipino literary master and national artist whose numerous works include the prize-winning novel The Woman Who Had Two Navels (1961). Its plot revolves around the Manilan protagonist Connie Escobar’s flight into Hong Kong and her insistence that “she [has] two navels” (1). Her assertion is complicated by her request for Hong Kong-born-and-based Pepe Monson to perform “an operation” on them (1). While this curious premise has generated numerous analyses over time, the novel’s setting—that is, post-1945 Hong Kong—remains understudied. Addressing this gap, the paper offers a geocritical intervention examining the historical conditions and spatial production …

“The River’S Tent Is Broken/Wasak Ang Kubol Ng Dagat”: The Modern And The Nation In Bienvenido Lumbera’S Ang Pagas Na Lupain, Susan Mila P. Alvarez-Tosalem Oct 2026

“The River’S Tent Is Broken/Wasak Ang Kubol Ng Dagat”: The Modern And The Nation In Bienvenido Lumbera’S Ang Pagas Na Lupain, Susan Mila P. Alvarez-Tosalem

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

In 1971, Philippine National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera translated one of the most outstanding examples of world literature, T. S. Eliot’s modernist poem, The Waste Land, into Filipino. At the time, Lumbera had just earned his PhD from Indiana University as a Fulbright scholar. Naturally, his colonial education and aesthetic preference shaped his approach as a critic and scholar. However, Lumbera’s “radical transformation” became evident in 1968, in the midst of growing discontent with the neocolonial government (Veric 140). This paper underscores, therefore, the centrality of translation in world literature, especially in the context of a single “world literary system” (Moretti …

Designing The Misfit Through Re-Ordering Of Fragmented Materials, Mochammad Suva Nugraha Oct 2026

Designing The Misfit Through Re-Ordering Of Fragmented Materials, Mochammad Suva Nugraha

ARSNET

This study explores how architectural order can be shaped by misfit, focusing on the reuse of building-material fragments as a means of exploration. Existing discourse of architectural order aims to eliminate misfit to achieve the condition of fit. In architecture, misfits such as cracks, breaks, and irregularities are commonly treated as flaws requiring correction. Nevertheless, certain construction practices may enable transformation of these misfits into design opportunities. This study qualitatively examines the use of broken floor tiles at Wisma Kuwera, Semarang, Central Java, to investigate how material misfit can be designed into architectural order. Data were collected through field observations, …

Multisensory Astrotourism Design Through Darkness Experiences, Wiwien Phen, Adriyan Kusuma Oct 2026

Multisensory Astrotourism Design Through Darkness Experiences, Wiwien Phen, Adriyan Kusuma

ARSNET

The growing interest in astrotourism has positioned night sky as an important tourism resource. However, existing astrotourism facilities often focus primarily on observation infrastructure, while paying less attention to the spatial experiences that shape visitors' journeys before, during, and after observation. This design study explores an experiential astrotourism that engage with various degree of dark conditions and prepare visitors for night-sky observations. It questions how architecture can shape the spatial and sensory transition in visitors' night-sky observational experience through a design exploration of a Milky Way-themed astrotourism attraction in Pangalengan, Bandung.

The study integrates discourse on dark-sky experience, experiential architecture, …

Tracing Graffiti: Negotiating Lived Urban Surfaces, Akinaura Irbah Priambudi, Multazam Akbar Junaedi, Ilena Nusky Mehdia, Eugenia Emmanuella Setiawan, Defry Agatha Ardianta

ARSNET

This paper examines surfaces as a selective, successive platform for shared spatial negotiations. It explores how layers of traces on surfaces accumulate through subsequent acts by multiple actors over time, offering a way to understand ongoing negotiations of urban space. This study focuses on graffiti as material traces in urban surfaces, produced from temporary acts of writing and the articulation of spatiality within the environment. Through a case study in Surabaya, Indonesia, this research examines graffiti, reconstructs its presence on an urban wall, and investigates how its contextual presence, actors' interactions, and spatial relationships are articulated in layers over time. …
