Sustainable Geopolymer Concrete: Iraqi Steel Slag As A High-Performance Aggregate For Improved Strength And Durability, Riyam Jaddana, Hussein Jaber
Engineering and Technology Journal
The construction industry’s reliance on ordinary Portland cement (OPC) contributes significantly to CO₂ emissions and resource depletion. Geopolymer concrete (GPC) offers a sustainable alternative, but natural aggregates (NAs) still harm the environment. This study investigates recycled coarse steel slag aggregate (RCSA), a metallurgical byproduct, as a partial replacement (10, 20, 30, and 40% by volume) for natural coarse aggregate (NCA) in metakaolin-based GPC. The geopolymer paste was formulated with optimal molar ratios of 3.65 for SiO₂/Al₂O₃, 2.9 for sodium hydroxide/ sodium silicate, and 0.62 for water/metakaolin. Results showed that incorporating RCSA enhances both mechanical and physical properties of GPC. Optimal …

Flexible pavements constructed over weak subgrades are subjected to premature failure due to excessive stress and deformation. Actual Tire contact pressure significantly affects the performance of flexible pavement. Geosynthetic reinforcement is used to overcome these issues. In this study, physical models with a (1/3) scale were used to investigate the effect of tire contact pressure on geotextile-reinforced flexible pavements over weak subgrades. Three pavement sections were studied: Control (unreinforced), Base-Surface reinforced with a non-woven geotextile, reinforced at the middle depth of the asphalt layer. Repeated axle loads were applied at three contact tire pressures of 480, 560, and 690 kPa, …

Key results demonstrate distinct effects: Spherical calcium carbonate increased stiffness (E′) by 45% at 15 wt% loading but restricted damping (tan δ) due to agglomeration-induced …
A Review Of Smart Actuation Technologies In Modern Mechatronic Systems, Ivan Gorial
A Review Of Smart Actuation Technologies In Modern Mechatronic Systems, Ivan Gorial
Engineering and Technology Journal
Smart actuation has transformed mechatronics over the past six years by harnessing materials that turn heat, electricity, magnetism, or light into finely tuned motion. Our survey of developments from 2019 to 2025 reveals clear trade-offs: electro-active polymers can stretch beyond 200% but operate at roughly 30% efficiency, whereas piezoelectric devices achieve over 95% efficiency with displacements under 0.1%. Ionic polymer–metal composites and magnetorheological actuators strike the best balance for precision work, delivering about 50% stroke at 60% efficiency. Real-world examples show that packing tiny shape-memory alloy bundles into soft exosuits grants sub-millimeter accuracy without sacrificing comfort, and that materials capable …

Taguchi analysis and ANOVA highlighted the significant influence of these parameters on machining outcomes. The optimal MRR (0.113 g/min) was achieved at 20% electrolyte concentration, 40V, 150 µs pulse-on time, and 25 µs pulse-off time. The best TWR (0.007 g/min) occurred at …
Non-Linear Finite Element Analysis For The Verification And Parametric Study Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Strengthened In Compression Zone To Improve Ductility By Using Abaqus, Dunyazad Assi
Engineering and Technology Journal
Ductility is an important mechanical property of concrete structures, in tensile members, as it is the property that allows the structural member to deform plastically long before the failure point. To increase the deformation period of the beams, i.e., the ductility of failure. In the current paper, four reinforced concrete beams were modeled and compared using nonlinear finite element analysis. Reinforced concrete beams are developed and analyzed by using ABAQUS commercial software. Nonlinear material behavior, as it relates to steel reinforcing bars and plain concrete, is simulated. The effect of the change of the concrete compressive strength in the upper …
