Lafayette, The Thinker, Anna Trull Apr 2023

Lafayette, The Thinker, Anna Trull

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Between 1775 and 1834, the Marquis de Lafayette played a role in the ongoing development of both the American and French Revolutions. Most previous scholarship about Lafayette highlights his military activities as a major-general in the American Revolution and as General of the National Guard of Paris in the French Revolution. This paper examines Lafayette’s draft of the Declaration of the Rights of the Man and of the Citizen, a list of enslaved peoples that were chosen for Lafayette’s experimental plantation in French Guiana, Lafayette’s membership in the Society of the Friends of Blacks, and letters between Lafayette and America’s …

Explicit Instruction In A Second Grade Picturebook Author Study, Ted Kesler

Publications and Research

sing the Learning by Design multiliteracies framework, writing workshop was transformed into composing workshop. The researcher worked with a team of four second grade teachers in an urban public elementary school to redesign their Kevin Henkes author study to equally value art and design, guiding their students in creating their own narrative picturebooks. The researcher addresses the following two research questions: 1. What explicit instructional practices did the teachers enact? 2. What influence did these explicit instructional practices have on the second graders’ composing work? The researcher applied cross-case analysis, first to create an inventory of explicit instructional practices, and …

Experimentation On Nebraska Farms For Sustaining Soil Health Management, Fernanda Souza Krupek Apr 2023

Experimentation On Nebraska Farms For Sustaining Soil Health Management, Fernanda Souza Krupek

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Soil health management practices have increasingly been promoted across US agroecosystems to address many interrelated environmental and economic food system challenges. Sustaining conservation behavior – through farmer’s adoption and continued use of practices – is key for achieving many soil health-related intended social-ecological benefits. Using a range of scientific methods, from lab-based experiments to on-farm research to farmer interviews, the overall objective of this dissertation research was to explore soil and human dimension considerations to design farming and knowledge transfer systems for sustaining soil health management in the US Midwest. In a multivariate analysis of ten on-farm research sites, we …

Ketorolac: To Bleed Or Not To Bleed? That Is The Question, Elisabeth E. Stewart Apr 2023

Ketorolac: To Bleed Or Not To Bleed? That Is The Question, Elisabeth E. Stewart

Nurse Anesthesia MSNA Student Capstones

Ketorolac is a readily available, inexpensive, moderate to severe pain management adjunct. As opioids lost favor, ketorolac gained popularity, as an opioid-sparing alternative (Corsini et al., 2021). Anecdotally, surgeons have been resistant to intra-operative intravenous ketorolac due to perceived bleeding risks. As such, this review seeks to evaluate the literature to determine whether ketorolac administration is associated with clinically significant bleeding in adult breast surgery patients. The results demonstrated conflicting evidence for ketorolac use. No literature has established a causal relationship between ketorolac and clinically significant bleeding. Future research avenues include geriatric, pediatric, labor and delivery, dosing, and randomized control …

Serving Together: A Phenomenological Study Of The School Resource Officer And Principal Partnership, Eric Nelson

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

Nelson, E. (2023). Serving Together: A Phenomenological Study of the School Resource Officer and Principal Partnership The increased presence of school resource officers (SROs) in schools places them in direct contact with school principals. This study examined how SROs and principals in six Minnesota public secondary schools describe their partnership. Data was collected using a series of semi-structured interviews between pairs of partners representing rural, suburban, and urban school districts. Participants identified challenges related to a lack of partnership vision, role clarity, and critical preparation and training prior to partnering. Participants reported that their partnership increased the sense of safety …

Nonprofit Political Engagement: The Roles Of 501(C)(4) Social Welfare Organizations In Elections And Policymaking, Margaret A. Post, Elizabeth T. Boris

Sustainability and Social Justice

This paper provides a framework for understanding the role of member-based, politically active 501(c)(4) social welfare organizations in U.S. civil society. Tax-exempt social welfare (501(c)(4)) organizations make up the second largest group of nonprofit organizations in the United States. Among them are a mix of membership organizations, social clubs, professional associations, and advocates that are permitted to lobby and engage in partisan political activities. Informed by the literature, case study research, and a dataset of politically active 501(c)(4) organizations, we identify categories of politically active (c)(4) organizations involved in electoral and policy change actions including national advocacy organizations, local and …

The Dwelling Places Of Israel: Historical Ashkenazi Migration And Settlement, Eliott Buyce Apr 2023

The Dwelling Places Of Israel: Historical Ashkenazi Migration And Settlement, Eliott Buyce

Honors Projects

Ashkenazi Jews hold a unique place in the history of Europe and the United States resulting from maintaining a distinct religion and culture while often facing legal restrictions and violent persecution. Both the legal restrictions and frequent violence have forced Jews to live in segregated spaces to differing extents depending upon where and when. Understanding the changes in such spaces over time offers a glimpse not only into Jewish history, but also into how communities deal with limitations on their civil liberties, take measures to protect themselves, integrate with surrounding cultures, and create a place for their religion and culture …

The Supreme Court Review Act: Fast-Tracking The Interbranch Dialogue And Destabilizing The Filibuster, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl Apr 2023

The Supreme Court Review Act: Fast-Tracking The Interbranch Dialogue And Destabilizing The Filibuster, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl

Faculty Publications

This Essay presents an analysis of the Supreme Court Review Act, a bill that was recently introduced in Congress. The Act would create a streamlined legislative process for bills responding to new Supreme Court decisions that interpret federal statutes or restrict constitutional rights. By facilitating legislative responses to controversial cases, the Act would promote the “dialogue” that commentators and the courts themselves have used as a model for interbranch relations. The Essay describes how the proposed Supreme Court Review Act would work, discusses some of its benefits, addresses its constitutionality, and raises some questions about its implementation and effects.

Things That Make You Go Hmm: Myths And Misconceptions Within Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Samuel D Spencer, Jordan T Stiede, Andrew D Wiese, Andrew G Guzick, Matti Cervin, Dean Mckay, Eric A Storch Apr 2023

Things That Make You Go Hmm: Myths And Misconceptions Within Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Samuel D Spencer, Jordan T Stiede, Andrew D Wiese, Andrew G Guzick, Matti Cervin, Dean Mckay, Eric A Storch

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications

The past four decades have yielded a robust body of evidence supporting the efficacy and effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as a gold-standard treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) across the lifespan. Exposure and response prevention (E/RP) has been identified as a key component of this approach. Despite robust research support for CBT with E/RP, several myths and misconceptions continue to proliferate in both research and practice settings. Such myths and misconceptions are concerning, as they lack empirical basis, may hinder widespread dissemination and implementation of CBT for OCD, and run contrary to the practice of evidence-based psychological medicine. Focusing on …

Metadata Decentralized: An Examination Of Folksonomy In Book Publishing, Dani Tellvik Apr 2023

Metadata Decentralized: An Examination Of Folksonomy In Book Publishing, Dani Tellvik

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

Classification of materials as multifaceted and complex as books is fraught with competing needs and idiosyncratic forms of expression and organization. A publisher’s primary goal is to position their books in a way that will attract readers who find value in the books. Book Industry Standards and Communication (BISAC) codes, the list of industry-approved subject headings, are essential to a book’s metadata for North American publishers. They are used to strike the balance so that a book blends in to an established category while also standing out as a particularly compelling of unique expression or the chosen classification.

Internet Censorship In The Time Of A Global Pandemic: A Proposal For Revisions To Section 230 Of The Communications Decency Act, Braxton Johnson, Alex Dewsnup Apr 2023

Internet Censorship In The Time Of A Global Pandemic: A Proposal For Revisions To Section 230 Of The Communications Decency Act, Braxton Johnson, Alex Dewsnup

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

During the era of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, social media sites have justified removing inflammatory opinions pertaining to COVID-19 in attempts to protect and promote public health and safety by automatically categorizing such opinions as misinformation. While the intention of such censorship is noble, it raises the question of whether social media sites and internet service providers in general have too much power when it comes to controlling information. In an age where social media has become intrinsic to the dissemination and formation of opinion, the free exchange of ideas on the Internet is of prime importance, and any threat …

The Weakening Of The Voting Rights Act: A Proposal For Modernizing Preclearance, Breannan Perez Apr 2023

The Weakening Of The Voting Rights Act: A Proposal For Modernizing Preclearance, Breannan Perez

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed more than 58 years ago. However, despite its attempt to identity and address discrimination, many of its safeguards have been struck down by the Court. In fact, Section 4b aimed to eliminate voting procedures that were discriminatory in effect, but has since been deemed as unconstitutional. Such a ruling has weakened the VRA and has burdened minority voters. This article proposes a modernized preclearance formula that considers states’ voting rights violations and current voting data. Such a proposal is necessary as a disregard of any voter is a threat to the integrity …

The Troubles On The Brink Of Recurrence: Northern Ireland In A Post-Brexit World, Emma K. Bohner Apr 2023

The Troubles On The Brink Of Recurrence: Northern Ireland In A Post-Brexit World, Emma K. Bohner

Student Publications

The Troubles were a difficult and trying time for Northern Ireland beginning in the 1960s. The subsequent decades were filled with turmoil and violence, mainly centered in Belfast amongst the Protestant and Catholic groups. In 1998, peaceful means to ending the Troubles were accomplished through the Good Friday Agreement. The accord established peace primarily through implementing a new power sharing government, ending direct rule by the British, disarming the paramilitary groups and creating a soft border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. The European Union was a critical asset in negotiating terms for peace. The aid of the European Union helped …

Jurisgenerative Tissues: Sociotechnical Imaginaries And The Legal Secretions Of 3d Bioprinting, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Joshua Shaw Apr 2023

Jurisgenerative Tissues: Sociotechnical Imaginaries And The Legal Secretions Of 3d Bioprinting, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Joshua Shaw

Articles & Book Chapters

Three-dimensional ‘bioprinting’ is under development, which may produce living human organs and tissues to be surgically implanted in patients. Like tissue engineering and regenerative medicine generally, the process of bioprinting potentially disrupts experience of the human body by redefining understandings of, and becoming actualised in new practices and regimes in relation to, the body. The authors consider how these novel sociotechnical imaginaries may emerge, having regard to law’s contribution to, as well as its possible transformation by, the process of 3D bioprinting. The authors draw on Gilbert Simondon and corporeal, material feminists to account for these disruptions as ‘ontogenetic,’ in …

The Impact Of Stakeholder Orientation On Tax Avoidance: Evidence From A Natural Experiment, Gary Chen, Ani Manakyan Mathers, Bin Wang, Xiaohong Wang Apr 2023

The Impact Of Stakeholder Orientation On Tax Avoidance: Evidence From A Natural Experiment, Gary Chen, Ani Manakyan Mathers, Bin Wang, Xiaohong Wang

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

We study the effect of stakeholder orientation on corporate tax avoidance. Using the staggered passage of constituency statutes across U.S. states between 1983 and 2006, we show that greater stakeholder orientation results in increased tax avoidance. We further find greater tax avoidance among firms with limited financial resources and that employees benefit from the change. Our results are consistent with stakeholder salience theory that resource-constrained managers prioritize the claims of salient stakeholders, such as employees, at the expense of secondary stakeholders, such as the government.

Restrictions On Worker Mobility And The Need For Stronger Policies On Anticompetitive Employment Contract Provisions, Donald J. Polden Apr 2023

Restrictions On Worker Mobility And The Need For Stronger Policies On Anticompetitive Employment Contract Provisions, Donald J. Polden

Faculty Publications

There is increasing concern in the United States about the difficulties that American workers are facing including concerns about limits on worker job mobility and how those limits affect workers’ wages and compensation, employee benefits, and finding their next job.2 Workers believe the challenges they face in changing jobs for better salary and benefits should be addressed so they have greater job mobility and opportunities for advancement. Workers are subject to restraints on job mobility across the spectrum of jobs, including those in executive-level positions as well as minimum- wage employees. Workers complain that they are not constrained in getting …

Diet Of A Threatened Rattlesnake (Eastern Massasauga) Revealed By Dna Metabarcoding, Alyssa Swinehart, Charlyn Partridge, Amy L. Russell, Arin Thacker, Jennifer Kovach, Jennifer A. Moore

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

Characterizing the diet of imperiled species using minimally invasive methods is crucial to understanding their ecology and conservation requirements. Here, we apply a DNA metabarcoding approach to study the diet of the eastern massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus), a Federally Threatened snake found throughout the Great Lakes region. Eighty-three fecal samples collected across 10 different massasauga populations located in Michigan, USA, were sequenced, with 70 samples containing prey DNA. We used universal metazoan primers and developed a host-specific oligonucleotide blocker to characterize their diet. We identified at least 12 different prey species, with eastern massasaugas exhibiting opportunistic feeding and …

College Majors And Skills: Evidence From The Universe Of Online Job Ads, Steven W. Hemelt, Brad J. Hershbein, Shawn Martin, Kevin M. Stange Apr 2023

College Majors And Skills: Evidence From The Universe Of Online Job Ads, Steven W. Hemelt, Brad J. Hershbein, Shawn Martin, Kevin M. Stange

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We use the near universe of U.S. online job ads to document four new facts about the skills employers demand from college majors. First, some skills––social and organizational––are demanded from all majors whereas others––financial and customer service––are demanded from only particular majors. Second, some majors have skill demand profiles that mirror overall demand for college graduates, such as Business and General Engineering, while other majors, such as Nursing and Education, have relatively rare skill profiles. Third, cross-major differences in skill profiles explain considerable wage variation. Fourth, although major-specific skill demand varies across place, this variation plays little role in explaining …

Myt1l Is Required For Suppressing Earlier Neuronal Development Programs In The Adult Mouse Brain, Jiayang Chen, Nicole A Fuhler, Kevin K Noguchi, Joseph D Dougherty

2020-Current year OA Pubs

In vitro studies indicate the neurodevelopmental disorder gene myelin transcription factor 1-like (MYT1L) suppresses non-neuronal lineage genes during fibroblast-to-neuron direct differentiation. However, MYT1L's molecular and cellular functions in the adult mammalian brain have not been fully characterized. Here, we found that MYT1L loss leads to up-regulated deep layer (DL) gene expression, corresponding to an increased ratio of DL/UL neurons in the adult mouse cortex. To define potential mechanisms, we conducted Cleavage Under Targets & Release Using Nuclease (CUT&RUN) to map MYT1L binding targets and epigenetic changes following MYT1L loss in mouse developing cortex and adult prefrontal cortex (PFC). We found …

Charged Multivesicular Body Protein 4b Forms Complexes With Gap Junction Proteins During Lens Fiber Cell Differentiation, Yuefang Zhou, Thomas M Bennett, Thomas W White, Alan Shiels

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Charged multivesicular body protein 4b (CHMP4B) is a core sub-unit of the endosomal sorting complex required for transport III (ESCRT-III) machinery that serves myriad remodeling and scission processes of biological membranes. Mutation of the human CHMP4B gene underlies rare forms of early-onset lens opacities or cataracts, and CHMP4B is required for lens growth and differentiation in mice. Here, we determine the sub-cellular distribution of CHMP4B in the lens and uncover a novel association with gap junction alpha-3 protein (GJA3) or connexin 46 (Cx46) and GJA8 or Cx50. Immunofluorescence confocal microscopy revealed that CHMP4B localized to cell membranes of elongated fiber …
