A soft-floor auction asks bidders to accept an opening price to participate in a second-price auction. If no bidder accepts, lower bids are considered using first-price rules. Soft floors are common despite being irrelevant with standard assumptions. When bidders regret losing, soft-floor auctions are more efficient and profitable than standard optimal auctions. Revenue increases as bidders are inclined to accept the opening price to compete in a regret-free second-price auction. Efficiency improves because a soft floor allows for a lower hard reserve, reducing the frequency of no sale. Theory and experiment confirm these motivations from practice.

Bilateral bargaining under incomplete information provides a controlled testbed for evaluating large language model (LLM) agent capabilities. Bilateral trade demands individual rationality, strategic surplus maximization, and cooperation to realize gains from trade. We develop a structured bargaining environment in which LLMs negotiate via tool calls within an event-driven simulator, separating binding offers from natural-language messages to enable automated evaluation. The environment serves two purposes: as a benchmark for frontier models and as a training environment for open-weight models via reinforcement learning. In benchmark experiments, a round-robin tournament among five frontier models (15,000 negotiations) reveals that effective strategies implement price discrimination …

Objective: Complement component 4 (C4), encoded by C4A and C4B within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) on chromosome 6, regulates the immune response and clears immune complexes. The variable copy number (CN) of C4 genes and retroviral human endogenous retrovirus K (HERV-K) element influence its function. Given the relationship of C4 CN with systemic sclerosis (SSc) risk, we assessed associations with SSc clinical and serologic subtypes.

Methods: We compared imputed C4 CNs across SSc subgroups (4,049 anticentromere positive [ACA+]; 2,200 anti-topoisomerase I [ATA+]; 577 anti-RNA polymerase [ARA+]; 1,078 triple-negative [TN] patients; 6,295 limited cutaneous SSc [lcSSc]; and 2,946 diffuse cutaneous …

Objectives: Preoperative alpha blockade is recommended for phaeochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs), whereas evidence for calcium channel blockers remains limited. This study evaluated perioperative haemodynamic outcomes with first-line amlodipine for preoperative blockade and identified predictors of intraoperative haemodynamic instability (iHDI).

Methods/design: In this monocentric retrospective study, 35 operated PPGL patients who received preoperative first-line amlodipine (July 2021-March 2024) were analysed. Continuous intraoperative arterial pressure recordings were analysed for episodes and duration of hypertension, hypotension, and iHDI. Biochemical phenotype and tumour characteristics were assessed as predictors.

Background: Due to their dependent location, lower extremity (LE) free flaps (FFs) are at increased risk for venous complications. This study analyzes risk factors of venous complications in LE FFs.

Methods: A single-center retrospective review was conducted of adult patients undergoing LE FF reconstruction from 2016 to 2025. Variables included demographics, wound and operative characteristics, and the number of venous anastomoses. The primary outcome was venous complications, defined as a composite variable encompassing venous congestion, flap loss due to venous causes, and flap hematoma.

Sorting Nexin 27 (SNX27), a key regulator of synaptic receptor trafficking and endosomal recycling, has been implicated in maintaining synaptic homeostasis and cognitive function. To date, variants in SNX27 have been reported in a small number of patients across three publications with severe neurodevelopmental phenotypes. However, the genetic and functional landscape of SNX27-related disorders remains poorly understood, and further evidence is needed to confirm its association with disease and to better delineate the associated phenotype.

ΔFOSB, an unusually stable member of the AP-1 family of transcription factors, mediates long-term maladaptations that play a key role in the pathogenesis of drug addiction, cognitive decline, dyskinesia, and several other chronic neurological and psychiatric conditions. We have recently identified that 2-phenoxybenzenesulfonic acid-containing compounds disrupt the binding of ΔFOSB to DNA in vitro in cell-based assays, and one such compound, JPC0661, disrupts ΔFOSB binding to genomic DNA in vivo in the mouse brain with partial efficiency. For victims of abuse, safety means hiding. Not just hiding themselves, but also their contact details, their address, their workplace, their roommates, and any other information that could enable their abuser to target them. Yet today, no number of name changes and relocations can prevent data brokers from sharing a victim's personal information online. Thanks to brokers, abusers can find what they need with a single search, a few clicks, and a few dollars. For many victims, then, the best hope for safety lies in obscurity-that is, making themselves and their information harder to find.

Purpose: To generate a comprehensive profile of microRNAs (miRNAs) present in human tear fluid using next-generation sequencing (NGS), establish a reference miRNome for healthy human tear fluid, and investigate whether miRNA expression varies by sex, race, or age.

Methods: Tear samples were collected from 32 adults using Schirmer strips. RNA was isolated using the miRNeasy Serum/Plasma Kit, and cDNA libraries were prepared using the QIAseq miRNA Library Kit. Barcoded libraries were sequenced on the NovaSeq 6000 platform. Currently, there is no governing standard that addresses the safe integration of AI into computer-based control systems (CBCS) in human spaceflight. The computer-based control expectations of those safety-critical systems on the International Space Station (ISS) are captured in SSP 50038, Computer-Based Control System Safety Requirements, with one caveat: the standard was not designed with AI applications in mind. Despite the potentially devastating consequences of pretrial incarceration and the complexity of modern bail applications, many individuals charged with crimes across the country are not appointed counsel to guide them through their bail hearings. Traditionally, application of the Sixth Amendment’s right to counsel in various pretrial proceedings has been evaluated under the “critical stage” framework, finding defense counsel necessary when a proceeding puts one’s trial rights at risk or is sufficiently trial-like—i.e., adversarial and requiring complex legal arguments. Article III’s heightened concreteness standard for statutory harms takes federal judges deep into legislative terrain, jeopardizing statutory damage provisions and confining Congress to post hoc solutions rather than preemptive strikes. The Supreme Court has insisted that creating a cause of action is a legislative function. At the same time, its recent standing cases instruct lower federal courts to permit suit on statutory injuries only when they find actual harm that bears a tight connection to injuries recognized at common law. During the first four years of Dick Cheney’s vice presidency (2001–2005), the second office reached dizzying heights. His next term and the ensuing vice presidency of Joe Biden (2009–2017) witnessed a reduction in the office’s executive-branch prestige, influence, and accomplishments and a return to earlier modern norms. Afterwards, the vice presidencies of Mike Pence and Kamala Harris saw an additional decline, and the first fifteen months of JD Vance’s tenure do not seem to have reversed this trend. Although taxation remains a hotly contested issue in debates by both politicians and political theorists—over the optimal size of government, distributive (and sometimes corrective) justice, or even the legitimacy of current private property arrangements—taxation has been largely ignored by legal theorists, to the detriment of both tax law and legal theory. This Article argues that tax law, driven by its battle against tax evasion, is in deep conflict with widely accepted conceptions of “legality”—that is, the qualities that make a rule distinctively and normatively “law.” This matters because legality is a key buttress in jurisprudential and political theory accounts that …
