Inhabiting "Sore Butt Cracks": Queering The U.S. Long-Term Care System, Alison Lawrence Apr 2023

Inhabiting "Sore Butt Cracks": Queering The U.S. Long-Term Care System, Alison Lawrence

Women's and Gender Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

In the face of a failing long-term care system, the author positions a queer theoretical lens as a potential source of creativity and empathy to help us build a care system that supports the dignity and personhood of all patients. The comedic work of a long-term care patient, Youtuber Clay-The-Comedian, is analyzed through a queer-theories lens as a new approach to long-term care that celebrates the personhood of all types of bodies, while also never diminishing the often difficult reality that folks in need of care face. This queer rhetoric engages with the messy, embodied experiences of patients to develop …

Head, Heart, And Hands: A Qualitative Thematic Analysis Comparing The Learning And Transformation Of Remote Vs. In-Person Experiential Service-Learning Opportunities For Teens, Jessa Anderson

Community Engagement Student Work

The goal of service learning is rooted in the integration of education, community, and self with the expectation that personal and community transformation takes place when students apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real needs of real people in the real world. This paper compares the service learning experiences of high school students done remotely during the 2020-21 school year versus service learning done in-person during the 2021-22 school year to determine if there is a difference in transformational impact by the type of service learning. A mixed methods program evaluation was completed that utilized data …

Juicy Nuggets With A Strong Core A Review Of Jordan Ellenberg’S How Not To Be Wrong: The Power Of Mathematical Thinking, Taras Gula

The Mathematics Enthusiast

How Not to Be Wrong is a wonderful and entertaining romp through a field of intriguing and thought-provoking anecdotes and social conundrums in which mathematical thinking and mathematics are revealed in all their messiness and power. While reading Jordan Ellenberg’s weave of stories for the first time, I found myself retelling them to as many individuals in my social circles as I could. Though the intent of the book is quite serious, [its goal is to show that mathematical thinking is accessible and useful to those who have not mastered complex mathematics, that mathematical thinking can lead to profound insights …

The Waiting Game In Massachusetts: Are Housing Policies In Massachusetts Doing Enough To Serve The Neediest Households, Carlie Cherry Apr 2023

The Waiting Game In Massachusetts: Are Housing Policies In Massachusetts Doing Enough To Serve The Neediest Households, Carlie Cherry

Community Engagement Student Work

The cost of housing is a burden for many households across the United States. In Massachusetts, where rents are some of the highest in the country, affordable housing is particularly hard for the neediest households in the state who are already struggling with the cost of living. Due to a shortage of low income housing in Massachusetts, wait times for housing assistance and affordable housing are extremely long which only exacerbates the hardships that households face. The funding, building, and distribution of low income housing is controlled by the housing policies at the federal, state, and local levels. However, these …

An Ironic Alliance: The Domestic Foundations Of Qatar’S Support For Democratic Revolution Abroad, Jonah Phillips Apr 2023

An Ironic Alliance: The Domestic Foundations Of Qatar’S Support For Democratic Revolution Abroad, Jonah Phillips

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

When the wave of revolutions commonly referred to as the Arab Spring engulfed the Arab world in the early 2010s, regional powers were suddenly presented with a potentially complete restructuring of the Arab world’s political and social structure. In the years leading up to the uprisings, rising food prices, soaring unemployment, and widespread political corruption had converged to make the Middle East and North Africa a fertile ground for revolution. The mounting pressure came to a head in December of 2010 when demonstrations broke out across Tunisia following the self-immolation of a street vendor protesting police corruption. The following months …

Legally Alone: The Redeemability Of Guardianship And Recommendations Toward Equitable Access, Patrick Hecker Apr 2023

Legally Alone: The Redeemability Of Guardianship And Recommendations Toward Equitable Access, Patrick Hecker

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

American adult guardianship needs reform. Thankfully, there is a small but dedicated reform movement that sheds helpful light on problems of underfunding, inattention, and abuse. While the movement’s efforts are needed, this Note argues it is a mistake to focus solely on the ways the guardianship system is sometimes harmful to people who already have access to guardianship. Few reformers consider the needs of people who would benefit from a guardian but do not have anyone to petition the court on their behalf.

This Note first argues that guardianship, despite its detractors, is redeemable. It can be part of a …

Wills And Testaments In Medieval England From The Thirteenth To The Sixteenth Century, Robert A. Wood Apr 2023

Wills And Testaments In Medieval England From The Thirteenth To The Sixteenth Century, Robert A. Wood

TEAMS Documents of Practice

This volume explores the will-making process in late medieval England for all levels of society. Wills are some of the most studied records of the late Middle Ages and capture the evidence of what people owned and the patterns of family relationships. These documents, compiled from several archives and city records, cast a light on many aspects of medieval life, including gender distinctions and the heavy influence of the church. Included are wills from widows, tradespeople and artisans, clergy, and high-ranking wealthy people, and through these sources he shows how wills, inventories, and testaments prepared people and their souls for …

Is History Repeating Itself? The Role Of The Supreme Court In Protecting Minority Rights, Alyssa Fox, Annabelle Crawford Apr 2023

Is History Repeating Itself? The Role Of The Supreme Court In Protecting Minority Rights, Alyssa Fox, Annabelle Crawford

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Throughout history, the role of the Supreme Court has been debated. Some individuals argue for strict interpretation of the Constitution, while others argue that the ideals of the Constitution should be prioritized. Landmark cases decided by the Supreme Court demonstrate the shift between the protection of state sovereignty and minority rights. This article argues that the Supreme Court is responsible to intervene on behalf of minority and historically-disadvantaged groups when their rights are threatened or infringed upon by state and federal governments.

Against Capital Punishment, Zac Bright, Ben Austin (Editor) Apr 2023

Against Capital Punishment, Zac Bright, Ben Austin (Editor)

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Capital punishment has a strong legal precedence in the United States. Capital punishment has been a penal option for those who commit conspicuously wrong acts. For such acts, the punishment seems to be proportional to the crime. In addition to the punishment’s adherence to proportionality, capital punishment mitigates problematic outcomes.

This paper advocates, however, that capital punishment should be classified as “cruel and unusual punishment.” Such violation of the eighth amendment delegitimizes capital punishment. Consequently, The Federal Death Penalty Act of 1994 should no longer be considered a valid law because of its constitutional violation.

The Fourth Amendment In A Digital Age: Defining Boundaries In Law Enforcement Surveillance Of The Home, Josh Hoffman, Jared Xia Apr 2023

The Fourth Amendment In A Digital Age: Defining Boundaries In Law Enforcement Surveillance Of The Home, Josh Hoffman, Jared Xia

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

As our country enters a new digital age, emerging technologies have increased the ability of law enforcement to monitor American citizens more closely. The tracking of suspects through thermal imaging, video monitoring, and cell phone GPSs are just a few examples of the unlocked potential now available to investigating authorities. When directed at the home, these technologies allow for unprecedented encroachment of our most intimate sphere of daily life. With this accelerating prevalence of technology in surveillance practices comes the need to reassess what boundaries the Fourth Amendment defines for our privacy. This paper explores the application of the Reasonable …

Defending The Constitutionality Of Abortion Rights, Sydney Reil, Cynthiana Desir Apr 2023

Defending The Constitutionality Of Abortion Rights, Sydney Reil, Cynthiana Desir

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

In 2018, the constitutionality of the Mississippi Gestational Act was called into question by the Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This act illegalized the majority of abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Given the constitutional right to abortion granted by Roe v. Wade and upheld by Planned Parenthood v. Casey, both the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit deemed the Act unconstitutional as a violation of that right. The State of Mississippi brought the case under the review of the United States Supreme Court in 2021, seeking …

The Constitutionality Of Contributing To Climate Change, Madeline Troxell Apr 2023

The Constitutionality Of Contributing To Climate Change, Madeline Troxell

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Despite the issue of human-caused climate change being upheld by science for decades, topics of its legitimacy, relevance, and repercussions are still debated heavily today. In an attempt to argue for their constitutional right to a safe and livable climate, 21 young plaintiffs have sued the federal government for its affirmative action increasing America’s dependency on fossil fuels, thus exacerbating the climate crisis. The obstacles facing their case can be reduced to an argument concerning the courts jurisdiction over climate issues. This article will argue that the plaintiff's case is centered around the civil rights of children, and thus the …

Graduate, 2nd Place: Assessing The Knowledge, Attitude, And Everyday Life Practices Adopted Among Eastern Illinois University Students Towards Sustainability, Joel Holison

2023 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

The concept of sustainable development gained attention and came into focus with the publication of the Brundtland Report (Brundtland, 1987). later the Education for Sustainability (EfS) initiative was presented in 1997 through the “Thessaloniki Declaration” as a carrier of the common and single message (Knapp, 2000). Sustainable development is the way a country pursues its economic development that does not jeopardize the opportunity for future generations to achieve their development (Brundtland, 1987). Deforestation, land destruction, soil degradation, air and water pollution, and other types of environmental deterioration are paid in the name of economic progress. This detriment may outweigh the …

From The Ashes Of The Old: The Old Left And The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, 1957-1965, Matthew Nichter

Faculty Publications

How did the “Old Left”—the socialist milieu of the 1930s and 1940s—shape the African American civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s? Focusing on the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), this article examines several mechanisms of Old Left influence: personnel overlap, network ties, and organizational alliances. New findings on the Old Left backgrounds of Rev. Joseph Lowery, C. T. Vivian, and many of Martin Luther King Jr.’s teachers and friends are presented. The support that SCLC received from “red” labor unions is also highlighted. The picture that emerges is not the elaborate Communist conspiracy imagined by J. Edgar Hoover’s …

Kearns-Sayre Syndrome: Two Case Reports And A Review For The Primary Care Physician., Chad Richmond, Leonard Powell, Zachary D. Brittingham, Alison Mancuso

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS) is a mitochondrial encephalopathic disorder. Because mitochondria are ubiquitous organelles that are present in almost every human tissue, their dysfunction can affect nearly any organ system and give rise to a wide range of clinical characteristics. 1: As is the case with most diseases associated with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations, the clinical features of KSS were defined before modern molecular genetic classifications emerged. 2: The exact prevalence of KSS is unknown; however, estimates place it at about 1:100,000 people. Although it is a rather rare syndrome, the ability to recognize or consider KSS as part of a …
